The hotel itself is unique, stylish, and made for a memorable stay. I also have to give a special shout-out to The Count House bar. My group stopped in late looking for a drink, and Sara and Rachel welcomed us with such warmth and genuine hospitality. They made us feel like regulars from the moment we walked in. Sara crafted what was, without question, the best Mezcal Old Fashioned I've ever had. It was perfectly balanced and expertly made. Between the outstanding cocktails and the incredible service from both Sara and Rachel, our night ended on the perfect note. Thank you to the entire team for making our visit so memorable. I can't wait to stay at 21c Museum Hotel again and will absolutely be returning to The Count House on my next trip!

My wife and I stayed here recently and had a pretty good time, but we did have a few issues during…read moreour visit. First, valet picked up our car outside the hotel and returned it promptly when we checked out, so no complaints there. The valet seemed to sincerely care about our time (he apologized for making us wait for a few minutes), so we appreciated that. Valet was charged directly to the room and cost $35, which was a little pricey but nothing crazy. The front desk staff were generally present when we needed them but weren't super warm or friendly. The hotel also didn't have ear plugs on hand, so make sure you bring your own :) Not a big deal, of course. It was a special occasion so my wife and I rented the penthouse suite at the top of the hotel for the night. Honestly, was it worth the money? Probably not, but it was fun. The suite had a bathtub outside on the balcony, which was pretty cool, but unfortunately there's an apartment building right next door that's even taller than the hotel. My wife and I were taking a bath and chatting and I saw a woman in one of the apartments open her blinds and stare at us for a while. Kind of awkward! I guess there's a privacy barrier of sorts surrounding the balcony, but it's only a few feet tall and of course doesn't help when your audience is stories above you in another building. The view from the balcony was pretty nice, although you had to be standing to see it due to the aforementioned privacy barrier :) We were also a little underwhelmed by the bed. It was comfortable, but smaller than we expected. We are not tall people and our feet were practically sticking off the end! We were also surprised that the bedroom TV was a little antiquated and only offered DIRECTV channels instead of Netflix / Hulu / etc. We were given a printout with the different available channels but the guide didn't seem to actually correspond to what was available on the TV. We were hoping to see a specific movie but our options were limited, so we ended up watching Family Guy and falling asleep :) Ah well. I didn't test the TV in the living room but since it had the same DIRECTV printout next to the remote, I assume it had the same channels. Other random thoughts: 1) There were two bathrooms - a main bath and a guest bath, I guess. I didn't see any way of turning on the exhaust fans in either bathroom. Just kind of weird to have this issue in a fancy hotel room. There were also no hand towels ready in the guest bath. It also would have been nice to have an indoor tub for the main bath - what if it's storming outside? That being said, the shower was spacious. 2) They provided robes to use for the sauna, which was nice, but the second robe was missing slippers. Also, it was quite confusing to find the sauna - there weren't any signs, and we had to first enter the exercise area and then enter the sauna from there. The controls for activating the sauna were a little confusing / primitive, but it worked out OK. That being said, after we got out, we noticed that the nearby drinking water dispenser was broken. Man, you need to have access to water after you get out of the sauna! 3) The elevators were confusing! We always had to take two different elevators to get to our room, and we definitely got mixed up when we were trying to find the sauna. 4) The museum was OK. Nothing crazy cool, but it was a good way to spend 15 minutes. 5) The hotel is located squarely in downtown Durham, so it's a pretty solid location. There are coffee shops, bars, and restaurants all within walking distance. Overall, we had a good time. Some aspects were a little disappointing, though, especially for the price tag.

The free breakfast is typical for these price hotels. While they did not have any fresh fruit they did have an excellent selection of yogurt. Parking is inadequate with relatively few spaces. I did not try to park in the garage as it is very small and I was afraid of hitting my car on something even though I have a standard size SUV. Their handicapped parking is inadequate and I had to park across the street; I got the last parking space when I came in at about 9:00 PM. Their parking is bizarre since it is apparently handled by the city of Durham. There's some sort of QRS code you have to scan which I could not figure out. So I decided that I would just pay for parking when I checked out. However, when I did I noticed that I had received a parking ticket! The city of Durham either has people checking either late at night or very early on Sunday mornings. This fortunately was taken care of by the hotel. This place wasn't here the last time we were in town, but it's a perfect place to stay now. Located just off the Duke east campus, it's along Main Street, a couple minutes from Ninth street in one direction, downtown the other, and little jaunt to the Durham Bulls park and very close to the main freeways in the area. The building is very long - we were at the far end and it helped us get our steps in! The room we were in was at the end in a corner and was an odd shape - literally no other way to put it. The bedroom was good size, the couch room was just a little small. We have three little dudes sleeping in there and they did just fine. I just required a little feng shui! The bathroom had a random fifth wall that the toilet sat on. Not a big deal, just different than we've seen elsewhere. Our room was right over the parking garage, which was also very awkwardly shaped. There's a spot at the far end that you need to back into as we found it impossible to three point into it. Again, not a show stopper, but good to know ahead of time. The overflow lot across the street was much more straightforward. There's nice sitting space, a lively bar and a good medium sized workout area. The breakfast was solid, the market delightful, the staff lovely and the grounds overall very nice. I generally stay at the JB Duke hotel, but they were all booked up. Having a small dog with you when you travel can sometimes be an inconvenience when looking for adequate hotels. I happened upon the AC Hotel Durham. It was close enough to Duke to allow me to go back and forth between storage facilities and Duke University and take breaks in between. What caught my eye in the pictures online were the fact that they had hardwood floors in the room ( I HATE carpets). That alone peaked my curiosity. So we booked for two nights, and paid an extra fee that allowed the dog to stay. The room was very clean and I absolutely loved the bathroom. There was enough space for the dog to have his bed on the floor and walk around freely. On our last morning there, I came down with a horrendous migraine (the ones that make you vomit) that had me unable to get out of bed. We had only booked for two nights and the hotel was booked solid with no available rooms. My husband went downstairs to the front desk to see if there was any way we could extend the stay for one more day. He was told that our room was already booked by someone else after we check out. However, the young lady Shanteria Moore, told my husband to come back in an hour and they would try to work something out. My husband went down an hour later, and Ms. Moore informed him that he would be able to book for another night, but not in the same room. However, she was able to give us the room NEXT DOOR. I was soooo happy that I only had to walk a few feet away with a pounding migraine. The transition was so smooth. I can't thank Shanteria Moore enough, she just doesn't understand what it meant to me for her to accommodate me at my most vulnerable time. That alone will make me come back to the AC hotel Durham every single time I am down at Duke. I hope that if the hotel is reading this, they give her recognition because I will always choose this as my number one hotel in Durham hands down. She really made a difference of going above and beyond when a guest needed her. THANK YOU SHANTERIA MOORE, YOU ROCK! signed, A customer for life
