By far this is our favorite u-pick strawberry farm in Apex. It's a little off the beaten path, tucked behind some homes & subdivisions in a nondescript area. We've been coming to Buckwheat for years & the owners have always been friendly. They also carry seasonal items as well as homemade ice cream. They had some squash, shiitake mushrooms, snapdragons & prepicked berries. The berries. They had so many ripe berries that it took about 15 minutes to pick this huge bucket. The berries are huge. These berries are super sweet, juicy and very perishable. They're perfect to eat as it or for strawberry shortcake, jam or pie. Highly recommend!! read more

Super cute farm for strawberry picking. It looks like a neighborhood got built around them, but they are easy to find and have a huge sign by the road. We went on a Sunday afternoon and there were still plenty of strawberries to pick. The staff was very friendly. You can buy a bucket or a pint for picking, the bucket was $18. After we picked our strawberries we gave their strawberry ice cream a try and took some of their jam home. Both were delicious! I also appreciated how many picnic tables they had in the shade. read more

I absolutely LOVE Buckwheat Farm!! Jim and Karma make everyone feel like family. Their strawberries are the absolute best and sweetest. I drive by other strawberry farms to get there. They make their own ice cream and it is out of this world! They also make their own jellies and I love the pepper jelly the most. Check them out on weekends and you can get BBQ sandwiches. I brought my 8 month old and my 4 year old to pick strawberries for my 4 year olds birthday. We came late Sunday afternoon (today) and lots of the strawberries had been picked over. My daughter had a great time even though we didn't get a lot of strawberries. I'm guessing it was the owners but they made sure we had enough strawberries to take home and were the nicest people to us! I HIGHLY recommend this place for picking strawberries! What a sweet farm and perfect for little ones! We went on a Sunday afternoon around 11 a.m. and it was busy but not over crowded. We paid $15 for a bucket that you can fill up the brim. Bonus- you get to keep the bucket! The bucket might be for covid times but I'm not sure... either way, my son is still playing with this bucket 4 days later. After picking we enjoyed home made strawberry ice cream, looking at the horse and took some snapdragons home. Parking was no problem. It was an idyllic southern day and I look forward to going back year after year. read more

I love this place! It small, it's hidden and it's not too overwhelming. They also have animals but the highlight is Kevin the peacock! Unfortunately, Kevin's girlfriend passed away this year due to a coyote. It's sad. The interaction between the two was funny to watch. You can bring your bowl, bucket or any containers you have and they fill it up to your heart content. If you do not have a container, they will give you a bucket. There's two sides: the left side are smaller berries but very sweet and the right side have bigger berries like the ones in the store but also sweet. This year the season started early due to the weather and barely inexistant winter. They had to close for a couple of days due to over-picking on spring break. We were lucky when we visited the weather wasn't too warm and it wasn't packed. It's almost the end of season but there's still a lot of sweet delicious berries. After you pick some and pay for them, don't forget to grab one of their homemade ice cream. I haven't had their sweet potatoes but the strawberry and blueberry are delicious. In the distance, I can see that the blueberry bushes are getting ready. Need to try that later! read more

We LOOOOOVE Buckwheat Farm. The strawberries are so yummy. The people are so nice. The prices are also good for U-Pick. A big bucket is usually $10. They also have fresh ice cream, horses to pet and goats to see. It's a perfect outing for all ages. Tip: I always freeze my strawberries so I have yummy berries all year long. read more

when I got there my car immediatly got a flat tire and that gave me a bad feeling about this place the service there was terrible the old man was filming young kids which was creepy so I called an Uber and left without getting anything. read more

We loved this place! We had never been berry picking and one of the owners explained everything clearly and gave us buckets for our berries (we brought our own containers to bring them home). There's a little station to wash your hands with soap before you go picking. She explained the different types of berries and how their flag system works. There were plenty of berries to pick and after we paid (they were priced very reasonably), the co-owner said hello to us and asked if we wanted to feed their animals. They have 2 pens, a larger one for 2 horses and a smaller one with 2 goats. He showed us Cooper the horse and how to feed him, and my son loved feeding the animals. The animals were very gentle and sweet. We also saw a peacock hanging out on the grounds. We didn't try their ice creams but I bought a jar of peach jam. My son loved it so much he asked to go back the next day, which we did. Oh, and the berries were wonderful. My son and husband tried the barbecue (pork sandwich), which seemed very reasonable at $5 and stuffed with smoky meat. Parking lot is a small gravel lot but we've never had any issues. Thank you, Buckwheat Farm, for giving us the opportunity to do something normal in these strange social-distancing times! We were ready to skip our yearly strawberry picking adventure this year in efforts to keep ourselves and the community safe, but my kiddo was so disappointed when we informed her that we probably couldn't go this year. Our usual farm was looking more and more crowded on their social pages, and we were just going to skip the experience this year until we found Buckwheat! (My kiddo was so happy to hear we could actually try going here!) Here, they are really taking safety and cleanliness seriously. I checked their website and it had time slots to sign up for in advance to keep the number of people limited on the farm at any given time. I heard they even turn people away if they come and the farm is already at capacity. At the farm, they have windows installed to keep the people working protected on one side of the glass and customers safe on the other. There are hand sanitizer stations set up around the farm too. They also had a flag system to keep the number of people in any given row limited. When we were there, the closest group to us was maybe 4 or 5 rows over. And the best part? The berries of course!! They were SO good from Buckwheat! The local berries we've been getting from our CSA have been great so far, but the Buckwheat strawberries were even better! Great produce! I'm so glad we were able to continue our annual strawberry picking tradition despite these different times right now, and I'm glad we were able to support a local farm too. Reviewing a place like this is going to immediately assume bias. Why? Because you go to a local farm to support that farm. You do with your presence, with your dollars, and with your reviews. Full disclosure: I am a transplant to the Apex area. I live in a community that was very recently built that is adjacent to this site. Hypocritically perhaps, as I helped fund the destruction of the area. That said, this place is a must-go. The strawberries are so much for for the whole family to pick. Sometimes they have other crops, but that is their main staple. Additionally, you can buy farm-grown products AND if you're there on the right day, they have a smoker going with amazing BBQ, wings, and dogs. The strawberries at Buckwheat Farm this year are just FABULOUS!! The great weather we've been having means that the berries are sweet, firm and delicious. You can pick your own, or they also have pre-picked berries in quarts, buckets or flats. Whether you're making ice cream, pairing them with shortcake and ice cream, or eating 'em plain, you really can't go wrong. And you just can't compare berries in the super market with berries fresh from the field. These are just the very best! Our first visit to this "pick-your-own" strawberry farm. So quaint, so country, and such a happy environment! Besides strawberries, there's a whole picnic area with barbecue pork sandwiches & stuff to quench your thirst or take care of your hunger, after picking all your strawberries! Guess what?! They even sell homemade ice cream in blueberry, strawberry, peach, jalapeño & pumpkin spice flavors! We found out that they start the season in April and run thru the end of May.
