Yesterday, we were in the middle of a little road trip and we made two stops...BOTH at Buc-ees. The first was in Tennessee at what I believe is the largest location in the country. We got gas and my husband went inside. He got back in the car and he was raving about it. By the time we were nearing Richmond, KY, we must have passed 15 billboards. I noticed several mentioning the brisket. I couldn't help but to be slightly intrigued, but not near as much as my husband.
Long story short, our second stop was decidedly going to be Buc-ees. The kids needed to stretch their legs. We all needed a restroom. We had to see what the hype was about. Despite being in a seemingly remote location, this place was bustling with all sorts of people. I thought of this as more of a truck stop kind of place, but they had EVERYTHING. Local gifts, swimsuits, chairs, snacks, meals, coffee, beverage stations galore. In a kiosk-ish thing in the center...they were cutting the brisket we had heard so much about.
The brisket was good. It was $8.50 a sandwich without chips or a drink. I got a giant soda to share with my husband. It was their own brand of soda, non GMO, and made with cane sugar. The also carry regular brands. It wasn't overly sweet. I don't drink much soda, but it was good. The chips were also good and fresh. The sliced brisket sandwich was decent. For a truck stop, it was better than decent. I would've preferred the sauce on the side, but it did make it easier to take on the road. We also got some cookie dough bites the kids picked out. I tasted one and wasn't fan. I'm not big on sweets though and the kids did enjoy them.
If it were based solely on food, I'd probably be at about three and a half stars. I'd add that extra half star because it was certainly better than fast food, but it was still fast. It was convenient. The entire experience bumps this place up to a solid four stars. Not just because I could buy a board to display my charcuterie, a swimsuit, along side some brisket...but the bathrooms. Oooooh, the bathrooms.
There are a bajllion stalls. They're large, comfortable, and clean. They have their own hand sanitizer in each stall. Moreover, they have their own foam cleaner to wipe down your seat before you sit down. There's a purse rack. Outside the stalls there are hand-washing stations that are plentiful and spotless. These are five-star bathrooms and this alone makes Buc-ees worth revisiting. read more
