We were in town for our older daughter's graduation and so we stopped by to pick up some more BU gear to share with our family back in NY. I managed to find the last Boston University Dad shirt so I was pretty stoked! They have a very large variety of BU gear ranging from t-shirts to wind breakers to sweatshirts. Always loved the experience as you walked in the store, the smell of the new books, freshly brewed coffee, and able to somewhat seat on the floor and read any books that interest me is always heavenly and relaxing. It's hard to get that now in this day and age of social media and apps. Life will never be the same again because of technology. Wow! From looking at the reviews, I see that there isn't a lot of love for this place. I suppose I can see why---it must really be a zoo at the beginning of the semester with students buying textbooks and dorm supplies. All that said..."Yay! I'm a fan" and in part it has to do with these 2 words---alumni discount. It's a 10% discount for alums when you show your alumni card and I'm always glad to get any discount. The first floor has a Starbucks and we've enjoyed stopping in to get a drink and sit a while. Also, on that level is where you find most of the BU branded clothing for sale. I say "most" because they've moved around the "alumni" clothing more than once, which is frustrating. This last time it was on the first floor but apart from the other stuff. The second floor is like a typical Barnes and Noble bookstore with books and magazines on various topics. I like that there are plenty of places to sit down and read for a while---something not found too much at other B&N stores. The third floor is where dorm room supplies are found plus other BU branded items. For a time, that's where alumni gear was located as well as shirts for the various schools within BU. This time around, they had shirts for the various BU sports teams. Another floor has textbooks but I haven't explored it, as I have no need to do so lest it just might trigger one of those dreams where you discover it's final exam time and you haven't attended any classes. Then you wake up and you are so relieved LOL! For me, no trip to Boston is complete unless we make a visit here. Every time we're here, we don't go away empty handed. This BU bookstore is far better than the one that existed when I went there (many, many moons ago). The staff-guy that was directing the line was not nice. He seemed very annoyed by everything and everyone, although, other employee's were nice and friendly, so not sure what his deal was. 2 floors and lots of BU apparel on the fist floor. By a considerable margin I would rate the BU campus bookstore as the worst university bookstore I have ever had to deal with. By way of qualification, I have attended 3 universities, URI for my undergraduate degree, Roger Williams Law for my JD, and now BU for an L.L.M. degree. It is stunning to me that that a campus bookstore would, on a consistent basis, fail to stock the required textbooks for the University's courses. As a part-time student I am entering my 4th semester, and in each semester all or part of my order had either been backordered multiple weeks into the semester or were never stocked at all. How can this be? The BU bookstore is managed in a completely incompetent manner and makes succeeding at B.U. all the more difficult. If I were capable of making administrative decisions for the University I would sever the relationship between the University and Barnes and Noble as quickly as is practicable. read more

Ordered something online and found out after placing the order that the item was on back order. After about a month of it still not shipping I emailed them to cancel the order, as the item was intended to be a gift but I was going to be heading out of town soon, so if it ever arrived it would have been too late. so they get a 4 star review, heres the deal so yesterday it was 10 million degrees, im not lying, and i needed to seek refuge prior to the sox game. i had hours to kill prior to my rendezvous with lovely miss B and figured id kill it by reading some free mags in the chill zone, *chime* B&N to the rescue. so this is your typical B&N, books/mags, a starbucks for some java, they even have textbooks for BU kids to keep their dorm room doors propped open, but what i was most impressed with was the lack of attitude the counter people persons had when i accidental dumped an entire pitcher of ice water all over the barista station. oopsy sorry baristas, maybe you should get a proper pitcher lid. anyway, as i was saying, i sat there for a good two hours, made a mistake mess and all without the 'tude, 4 stars. also my yelpers if you go up to the second floor you have a clean WC (guess no more all you homeless people reading yelp) and some comfy chairs overlooking kenmore. ok secrets out. sorry again mr barista guy.... read more

Not into it. I will admit I'm biased about bookstores. I've never had a pleasant experience at a Barnes and Noble. The one at Kenmore is pretty bad, though. First of all, it doubles as a BU bookstore, so the BU paraphernalia is intense. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with BU, but it is overwhelming to walk into a bookstore and have to work your way around BU shoppers to find the poorly stocked fiction section. Yikes! Secondly, I just don't think it's the most efficient place in terms of locating where everything is. I've spent hours in this Barnes and Noble being directed in many different ways by the people working there, and always leave with nothing. Bookstores shouldn't be a maze. They should be easy to navigate. I think it would also be useful to have the BU sweatshirts, sweaters, et cetera on a floor for it's own, especially if it is going to be a Barnes and Noble open to the Boston public. I'll be honest. Worst experience at a Barnes and Noble/Starbucks cafe thing. Not sure who is responsible, B&N or Starbucks, but their training is non existent, their staffing sub par, and their customer service absurd. I ran in to grab a chai tea. The girl charged me for a Chai latte. When I pointed out the error she apologized kindly and called another girl over to fix it. The other girl spent five minutes guessing different ways to do the return saying, "Tom (not the real name) showed this to me once." Sadly, Tom wasn't there. Instead, there were 3 people who didn't know how to do a refund. I said they could just give me a gift card in the same amount instead and I could pay again for the tea I got in order to make it easier. They said no. The not so charming second girl who couldn't remember what Tom taught her proceeded to say they had no manager there, so did I want to wait for them to try to find one? She said it as though I was just going to say, "Don't worry about it, keep my five dollars and have a great day." The first girl ran off to find a manager. Flash forward 8 minutes and I'm still standing there. No one has acknowledged me again. When I asked not so charming second girl how much longer it would be she took a snarky tone and said there was no manager and usually people order a latte so when i said ,"chai" that's what they charged me for. I didn't say "chai" or "chai latte" I said a "chai hot tea." Wait, why am I defending myself to the person who works there? I don't care that someone made a mistake I just want to know know why it's taking so long to fix. The poor third guy who was working there looked terrified and removed sassy second girl from the scene and said he'd make a call to see what was taking so long. There's no point in rehashing the rest, but I was made to feel like I somehow inconvenienced them by making them get a manager to give me my money back. When the manager finally came ten minutes after the mistake happened, I provided some constructive feedback that they might want to increase their customer service training so the customer isn't made to feel like an idiot. They offered minimal response saying, "sometimes there are communication issues," and no offer for a free anything for making me late because I had to sit and wait. On Wednesday, January 7, 2009, my friend Sanjay and I (his real name is something different, but he's Indian so I figured...yeah) waltzed in here to sit a spell, catch up on things, and talk about his upcoming wedding / bachelor party, how his first semester at grad school went, and, of course, how my sales numbers were amazing in spite of the market. Actually, that's a lie. It just sounds better than what really went down. At any rate, it was his birthday. So we went to the Bertucci's next door (review coming soon), had a Light Late Lunch (L to the 3rd, L cubed, TRIPLELL...you get the idea), and then decided to kill time here and relax / give the 'Ucci's waitress reprieve from our shenanigans / inane conversation. So Sanjay says to the chick behind the counter "It's my birthday, is there anything you can give me?" Hey, shot in the dark right? A free chotchke? Starbucks keychain? And she says "No." Hey, not entirely unexpected, right? Sanjay: "OK, well then how about a 'Happy Birthday' wish from you?" "No." What a fukkin bitch. "Whoa, what an ice queen!" I interject smoothly. "Yeah, holy shinto!" quoth Sanjay. "What about Starbucks gift cards, do you take those here?" "No." "Alright, small coffee. Sauce, you want anything?" "Absolutely not." Ridiculous. But that's not all. The other beaut was walking through the dining area where we were sitting, and Sanjay asked her another question. I forget what it was. Irregahdless, her response? I work at B.U., therefore, frequent this Barnes & Noble on a weekly basis. To review only one section would provide a mere fraction of the big picture, since there are five floors to the place that vary. Let's start with floor one, the cafe and bookstore. The bookstore is fine. I lost my B.U. I.D. a while back, which gives us employees a % discount. While showing a current pay stub or my B.U. insurance card has never been a problem, the bitchy manager of the cafe says "no I.D. no discount - period". This, despite the fact that I have all my I.D.'s plus a current paycheck. It was like she was challenging me, and in public, no less. After ten years of coming here, she made me feel horrible in less than two minutes. Nasty little thing, she is. The regular cafe employees, who sadly work for her are, otherwise, quite nice. However, I avoid spending a dime in the cafe when I spot the little Nazi manager. The first floor bookstore is lots of fun with seasonal and holiday tables set up in the front middle. This means at Halloween there are great "haunt" books on exhibit, or terrific recipe books during big cook seasons such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. I love their 'theme' tables. They also have an excellent magazine section and fun sales tables near the back escalator. The clothing section, however, is boring and over-priced. The clerks are always friendly, and yes, they honor my pay stub. Floor two features great sales in the middle section. Plus, there is a whole additional room full of marked down books that are quite good. There is a reading area in the corner front of this floor that overlooks Beacon Street with four chairs set side by side. Unfortunately, during my lunch hour the sun is hitting the window and it is glaring. Not conducive to good reading for me, I'm afraid. They are very limited on their book selection, though happy to order for you. Again, always a very helpful staff. Floor three is fun, fun, fun. Lots of everything such as home goods, electronics, cards, clothing, funky gift items, furniture, office equipment, body shop items, and many other eclectic assorted goodies. While the staff is always nice here, there seems to be a frequent turnover rate which means standing there for a few extra minutes waiting for the cashier to call the manager for a price check or cash register snafu. This is an ideal place to find unique and interesting gifts and cards. Floor four consists of student texts and other specialized student items. Nothing here for me, unless I pick up some classes. Floor five is strictly books and maps. I frequent this area when looking to browse or buy wildlife & nature, travel, or technical books. Frustratingly, the wildlife selection is seriously lacking. Fifth floor is also where guest authors speak in open rooms with seating. They used to also provide these as reading rooms when they weren't in use. I am not sure they still do. There are two regular female clerks on this floor who have worked here for some time and are always conversational and helpful. Overall, I enjoy this Barnes & Noble, though the prices are high and the book selection low. Nix the nasty cafe manager on the first floor and I would give a higher rating. Yep, the score drops drastically considering I now avoid the cafe area like the plague. Otherwise, I have always found the rest of the bookstore staff to be helpful and friendly. read more

I like going in and finding a book to read, then plopping down on a couch and not buying the book. This place is very close to my workplace and is well air-conditioned, so I just like to bum around in there on my breaks. Their books are overpriced in-store, and you can find them for much cheaper on their site. I don't usually buy books from B&N anyway, since I prefer to support smaller businesses. And yeah, there's a Starbucks there if you wanna get coffee or something, but, like B&N, I prefer not to give Starbucks my money. Plus, the one time I DID get something from there, the barista messed up my order after I repeated myself loudly and slowly three times! Medium iced chai with soy milk, light ice. She gave me a small chai with cow milk (and too much of it) and way too much ice. "Light ice" means "light on the ice", duh-doy! She seemed young and new though and I kinda liked her tattoo, so I didn't say anything. 3/5 stars because they have a huge selection and they let me read books without me having to buy them. I have to say I had one of the most pleasant Starbucks experiences here. The staff were all super friendly and the right amount of chatty. They seriously challenged the snarky barista stereotype. When I was standing in line, the gentleman in front of me wandered off to get a soda to add to his order. He was taking quite a while so the girl behind the counter offer to start my drink. I asked for a small, dark roast coffee which she poured and gave to me before the man returned. After I had paid I asked if she had soy milk for my coffee. She happily took out the box and told me to leave it on the counter when I was done. I was shocked at how easy this was. I've been everything from sassed to offered an espresso cup with a splash of soy milk in it when I've made this request in the past. Props to these guys for not being stingy with the soy milk! I sat with my coffee and my laptop for about an hour (I know, I know I'm one of THOSE people...) To my surprise there was plenty of seating to go around. I always leave when there isn't and a family or something is clearly trying to find space. Whilst I was sitting there was a staff change and from what I overheard they were just as nice. One barista, a young man, sang along to the Top 40s playing on the overhead. Usually I find this kind of behavior somewhat grating, but he actually had a really good voice and was quite enough to not be disruptive. The only problem is they don't take Starbucks cards, but instead offer a stamp card. Besides that it's a lovely little place that makes up for all the miserable Starbucks elsewhere in the city. read more

I want to defend B&N against its overpriced BU rep. My friend used to work here, and they have no control over the pricing of BU paraphernalia. This is BU's fault. This school is notorious for sucking all it can out of its students, so they jack the prices of sweatshirts and text books to pay for your cushy dorms and swanky diplomas. This Barnes and Nobel is filled with people who want to help you. They are not there to make cheaper your chosen expensive college education. The staff here has always been able to help me find books, and if not, then order said book for me. Yes, they are a chain, but by walking through their doors you have accepted their corporate appearance, if you would like to support the little guy, you can! Walk down newbury to Trident and enjoy small bookstore bliss. But if you are looking for a wide selection, helpful and friendly staff, and a convenient location, B&N is just right. read more

As a BU alumn, I love this Barnes & Noble. It's stocked with TONS of BU gear in addition to home goods and all sorts of cute gift items on the 3rd floor. This place is massive. Yet has a lot of character. The discount hall is amazing! I love just browsing thru the dorm furnishings area and the Starbucks is quaint and cozy. I make it a point to stop in and just look if I am ever in the area, which is rarely but still. It's just fun especially for those of us who don't frequent the area. read more

It's deceptively large, even with a lot of space devoted to sports and B.U. items. I can see having an area for B.U. stuff since it's right there. But with so many other places in the area selling sports - and particularly Red Sox - items, what's my incentive to buy it here? Based on the fact that it's B&N, I doubt it's price competitiveness. This is a review about picking up textbooks here. This B&N has the most inefficient pick up service. I've been inspired to order from Amazon from now on! You would expect to see a lot of staff helping out during the first week of school, but it was a zoo... not coming back here to purchase textbooks. I've attended a public undergraduate university with a ton more students and it was super quick and easy. Here, it's very unorganized and no one to ask questions, so students end up waiting in the pick up book line to ask questions! Lame! read more

Whatever you do, DO NOT rent or purchase your books from the BU Bookstore. Sadly, I naively thought that the BU Bookstore would behave in an ethical way in keeping with their association with the university. Silly me. In the fall of 2017, I rented a book, currently available on amazon.com for $153.60, for $121.30. I wanted to keep the book, so I did not return it and instead expected them to charge me the difference between the full purchase price of about $186 and my rental fee. Instead, they charged me another $153.95, including late fees and 75% of the full purchase price. This practice is out of keeping with standard practices. amazon.com also charges late fees, but if you do not return by a certain date, they charge you for the difference between the full purchase price (about $186 - the current price on Amazon is a discount) and your rental and late fees combined. In this case, I would have paid about $65 dollars more to buy the book. Instead, I ended up paying $153.60 extra for a total of $274.95 for a book that I could have purchased from Amazon for $153.95. The BU Bookstore claims to have a price match guarantee, but in this case, they refused to reduce all of their fees to match the situation on Amazon. The officials at Boston University should not allow this situation to continue, and state and federal officials should investigate as well. The BU Bookstore is part of Barnes & Nobles. How many campus bookstores across the country are owned by B&N? How much state and federal financial aid has gone to help B&N overcharge kids for books? read more

I must say - I enjoy coming here. I come for the coffee and a place to study. The starbucks inside is not your regular starbucks - they don't have Tazo Tea and their selection of food is much better. The desserts are tastier and fresher. They have lara bars, cliff bars, fruit leather, juices, quiches - it's great! I don't go to BU (I say this because it is the "BU" bookstore but I like studying here - I always find a seat even when it's busy and I never feel rushed to leave. Also, if I get bored I can take a break and browse floor after floor of books - travel, fiction, zen, etc. then come back to my boring work. The view isn't so great though - usually mad looking people rushing in and out of Kenmore station, buses, homeless people, ticket scalpers... Also, they usually have good books on the discount rack that is directly outside the restroom - I've found some good deals here while waiting for the loo! read more

I really do like this Barnes and Noble, I really do. But after spending so many years buying wildly overpriced textbooks there only to get one-tenth of their price back, I can't bring myself to give B&N a better rating. I like this B&N because they have an enormous book selection, plus a ton of bookstore novelties like Magnetic Poetry and Seasonal Gifts like calendars. They also have a "dorm and school supply" section that can be overpriced, but isn't always- some of their things are cheaper than Staples or Bed, Bath, and Beyond. Plus, their dorm/school supply floor often has a ton of small but cute knicknacks to give as gifts. They are one of the few places I've been able to find Hi-Liter brand highlighters, Fun-Tak (now Bluestick) and not-obscenely-priced coaxial/ethernet cables. The downside is that some of their things on this floor don't have price stickers, which can be infuriating if you're comparison shopping or actually care what things cost. BU Alums and Faculty get 10% off with proper Alumni/Faculty ID, and students get 20% off with proper ID during the pre-Christmas ID sale. If you have the alumni ID, the 10% discount is really helpful for some items, so it's worth checking out. read more

I hated paying so much for textbooks here, but that is basically the same at any school's official bookstore. I do like the Barnes and Noble though with the Starbucks on the first floor. I spent tons of money on BU paraphernalia over the years. At least the $30,000+ education gives me some benefit now. A 20% discount would be nice, but I'll take the 10% alumni discount. read more

I hate you BU Barnes & Noble, I spend sh*t load of money buying books from you because "they were not published anywhere else." WTF right, and you working with the professors to milk as much from the students as possible. Your "Buy Back Books" Program is a joke. You buy my, never written, clean as snow, English 101 book back for 1/2 the price and sale it for a 25% profit the next day. I even saw it myself, that's not cool man. Tips for students who have to buy books here --- 1st: You got to talk to your upper classmen friends to see what books the professors use. Then see if you can buy the copy directly from them! (Also check w/ the professors, because sometimes, they start writing their own books, got to get a heads up on that.) 2nd: Buy books online --- eBay, Amazon.com, and all other sites. Buy them used, because they change so fast there is no need to keep them. 3rd: Go to the BU B&N early. If you know what class you are taking, camp out at the bookstore. Because when they buy back the books, they would put them on the shelfs and usually, they are the 1st things that's gone. read more

I don't know why everyone complains so much about the textbooks and merchandising. Don't people come to bookstores for just books anymore? If not, they have an annual end-of-year sale for all BUIDs with good discounts, great for holiday gifts. And guaranteed textbooks (most of the time) is better than no textbooks, especially when they manage to order out-of-print books by the boxful from European stocks. Otherwise, I can't complain at all about this bookstore for being a bookstore. Book selection is varied enough for anything that you're looking for and generally well organized (learn to draw cartoons? or rather read graphic novels? maybe advanced programming languages? care to compare five translations of a prize-winning foreign novel?). I try my hardest not to ask the staff because it's sooo much better to actually browse in a bookstore (since www.barnesandnoble.com fulfills your specific needs, and they ship at much better rates and speeds than Amazon.com ever does). The 2nd and 5th floors are usually very quiet and comfortable, in contrast to the chaos of the 1st and 4th. read more

Don't be fooled by the clothing that takes up half of the first floor there is a place that sells books in there. The staff is more or less friendly, the selection is ranges from mediocre to amazing. If you're looking for a book on film, and not looking for a coffee table book, go here. Same thing with anything science related. The mentality from the store as a whole is problematic. Catering to BU students means that books aren't the main focus of the store, and the store doesn't do enough to reach out to the residents of Back Bay and Fenway. With as much floor space as books are given, the trend has been to decrease the amount of stock in the past few years. Go during December (and hold on to old college IDS) when nearly everyone qualifies for a 20% discount. Avoid whenever BU students get back to school, unless you don't mind waiting 20 minutes in line behind those teary-eyed parents buying up a wardrobe of sweatshirts and other BU paraphinalia. Also, avoid the store around and after April 16 when half the books are returned. The result is depressing. read more

I was delighted to find several Vegan options in the Starbucks Cafe at Barnes & Noble. I found specialty coffee drinks; a cranberry/quinoa salad; a hummus/pesto/olive sandwich; falafels; and some Vegan gummy candies. read more

If you are a BU student you will inevitably end up here whether it's just to buy a BU tee-shirt and some souvenirs for your family or you are compelled to purchase your text books here. Word to the wise, if you are a faculty or staff member or know someone who is and might be willing to help you out you will get a 10% discount with you BU Fac/Staff ID. Before Christmas they up the discount to 20% so if you have an ID or have access to someone who does I suggest going crazy at this time and buy all the BU tee-shirts, sweat pants and coffee mugs your heart desires. It's also a good time to stock up on books that are not normally discounted like the Loeb Library. Occasionally you can also find some good deals on the 3rd floor which is all school supplies, dorm supplies, frames, photo albums and cute gifts. I personally prefer Border's for my regular book shopping as their members club is free (Barnes and Noble charges you to join) and regularly gets you 20-40% discounts on books, CDs and DVDs. However, you can't get BU tee-shirts at Border's. Like any college bookstore their textbooks are insanely overpriced. Staff is generally helpful. One of my favorite moments here is when I bought a set of knives on clearance and they rang up as $0.01 and the cashier said "eh, whatever" and gave them to me for a cent! Best deal ever! read more

Wish i could give them 0 zip, this is the worst bookstore I have yet to be in. none of the associates knew anything about any thing in the store they lack knowledge of things that they sell in their own store. Where is the customer service no one had helped me no one has came over to help me I kept asking questions and all I got was shrugs and I don't know stupid employees and yes I'm still in the store as I'm writing this, walking out the door.. word to the wise hire people who give a damn. read more

Do not shop here if you have any notion that you may possibly wish to return your book. They have a VERY strict 14-day return policy. And if by any chance you forget about this policy and try to return said book, save yourself the headache of dealing with the extremely rude clerks who work there. Just stay home. This shop also doubles as BU's official textbook store. Students should know that this bookstore is a black hole from which your money will never be seen again. This place is seriously disturbing; how BU can put their name on a store that tries to rip its students off in every which way, I do not know. Aside from the fact that textbooks are ridiculously overpriced (just copy their ISBN's and buy em online), the BU bookstore charges ridiculous premiums for simple everyday supplies that they know students will need. For example, I recently saw a one subject "Five-Star" Notebook for $6 there, when I bought it at Staples for $1. Call me cheap, but it's appalling that they're making students (and their parents) needlessly pay such ridiculous amounts of money. read more

BOOOOOOOOOOO! I go in here as little as possible. The BU logo wear is expensive. AND they charge a bagillion dollars for textbooks. All I have to say is half.com . The only reason I would try to go in here was when they rented DVD's, it was a good deal...but then they got rid of that. read more
