The customer service here is so bad, the associates used to be super friendly and helpful but the last two time i went it feels like im being pushed out the store and rushed to make selection. I thoroughly enjoyed my time shopping at BTL Harlem. The shop is kept impeccably clean, down to offering scented hand sanitizer at checkout. The gentleman working the door was most definitely the right security guy for the area and kept an ever watchful eye, though in a completely professional and reasonable manner. I am ever watchful for profiling and felt like he and all staff gave all customers equal watch and attention. Both of the gentlemen staffing the counter picked up on my signals and quickly struck the exact note of how I wanted to be assisted. By this I mean that I was non-verbally communicating that I'm knowledgeable and know what I'm looking for, but appreciate insight when I inquire about a product. There was instant rapport, and never once did I feel oversold or pressed in any way. Stores like this can often lose points for having limited offerings. But I truly found BTL to have struck a great balance. This isn't a Wines & More. It's clearly curated to be a boutique experience. When I inquired about an item they ended up not having, they didn't brush me off but made it clear they would gladly check with their distributor if I was interested. The pricing seemed fair for the level of items they're selling and their attention to ensuring an ambiance is set which backs the experience they're trying to offer. And I gotta say.......Sommelier Dan? Tite, charming and alluring. He could easily be pompous but was tremendously accessible, friendly and approachable. If you're open to a boutique wine, spirits and sundries experience in an establishment clearly trying to raise the bar and bring a touch of class and elegance to the area, do stop in. Although the facilities are pristine, there are wine tastings (as there was one tonight), they deliver and are in cahoots with Maison Harlem their selections are pretty limited for a locale of this size. Only three types of Malbec (two from thé same winery at that) being available in thé whole store was disappointing. It made me wonder who curates their collection and if it's meant to supply thé restaurant overflow or stand on it's own. The malbec is just one example but go ahead and see for yourself. I've been an extremely loyal customer of BTL for over 3.5 years. In the past 2, it'd become the most pleasant part of my day, stopping by after work to pick up a bottle for our dinner but always to engage in generally pleasant repartee with the charismatic and supremely well-informed sommelier running the store. Imagine my disappointment at finding, six weeks or so ago, that the sommelier was gone and, with him, many of the best elements of the establishment: there is now no energy/brightness/excellent conversation in the space when you walk in; and there is no fully qualified sommelier to make recommendations--I was sold a shockingly mediocre, overly-sweet, and over-priced pinot grigio by the new sales representative working the floor. To add insult to injury, when my bill was totalled, I was told the normal policy of offering a discount to regular customers receive was being repealed. Yes, I'm very disappointed. BTL needs to understand that people don't walk into a wine shop only to buy wine. It's the entire experience that had made the store a great neighborhood spot--and one where customers were happy to part with their money, even if the prices were always above what one could find elsewhere in Harlem--or online. People show up and spend money if they're made to feel valued, if they're acknowledged as regulars--including, yes, with a small discount, for their loyalty; and if their preferences are tracked and treated with respect. I have advice that's probably too late: if it ain't broke, don't fix it. What a shame to find the place in such a mess just before the holiday season, when business ought to be booming. My friends and I won't be visiting again, unfortunately, but will have to find an alternative in the neighborhood. read more

We waited and waited for our order on Seamless, and our delivery never came. They never called us to tell us they weren't coming. We just got a cancellation from Seamless after the time it was supposed to arrive. Very disappointing, since we were celebrating a special occasion. Conveniently located wine shop with quality wines. They have discounted bottles but their pricing isn't for bargain hunters. I've been frequenting the store for a few years and everyone I've talked to has been knowledge and welcoming. I've also gotten delivery and pickup without any issues. They may have their own delivery system but are on a few major services as well. They don't carry a lot of traditional wines you will find let's say at trader Joe's but if you can describe what you like they'll try to recommend something similar. Give new bottles a chance and you might end up finding something great. 4 stars due to price (especially liquor). read more

I normally go to Pompette Wine Shop bc it's black owned, has delivery, and I appreciate their down time earth customer service. It feels more like Harlem to me. Ive only been to this shop twice bc it's off the A and needed to grab something quickly for a friends party. Both times felt a bit empty and pretentious in there. Even customers going in seem stuck-up. Because I look young and black I always feel like I'm being watched and treated without genuine customer service. Luckily this time I was greeted by a nice lady tonight who answered my question about a type of red I've never had. But when I get to the counter, there was this guy who didn't say hello after I greeted him (strike 1). Then after he realized I was annoyed, he attempts to make small talk about a street light that's been out on the corner and then stares at my wine reading the label awkwardly trying to figure out what wine it is (strike 2). I was cordial, but told him I was heading to a party and hadnt tried it yet. Then he just puts it in the plastic bag without offering to wrap it for me and didn't even say thanks/have a good night (strike 3)! I had to ask him to wrap it. Even the lady who helped me earlier was next to him carefully wrapping her customers wine without question. I don't understand this place & not a fan. It's doesn't feel like Harlem. 2 stars only bc I appreciated the lady who explained what Agiorgitiko was. read more

Appalling customer service. We bought two boxes of wine here, both brand name CUBI. The Sauvignon Blanc was fine, but the Syrah-Gavignan was musty, acerbic and undrinkable. It tasted as if it were off, or corked somehow. Took it back to the store and they refused to do anything, other than exchange it for a box of the same wine, which we absolutely did not want. The guy in the store said that this is store policy. Voting with our feet - we'd never be treated this way in Harlem Vintage. read more

The moment you walk into this conveniently located wine store you are greeted with warmth from both the ambiance of the store and the employees. They are truly knowledgeable about the wines and help direct you to some great options. Also the wine tastings are great (they also have scotch tastings, if that's your thing). BTL also has an app, an Instagram account and delivery. It's super hip and sometimes has discounts. Definitely one of my favourite wine stores in the area! read more

I came here with my friend Monique S. to check out the bottled selections after a dinner @ Maison Harlem. The shop itself is beautiful and modern, and the selections are a bit limited, but then again the shop is fairly new. My predominant caveat is the service: One of the gents working there (maybe the owner?) approached my friend and I asked us if we needed anything. We didn't, and were glad to peruse on our own, but he leered near us for the longest time as we were perusing the wines. We were checking out the Prosecco selections and right away he steered us to Moscato. There's a stereotype that Moscato is popular with black people who are well...newbies to wine. This is not the case with either my friend or myself. The only thing redeemable about this exchange is that he at least told us how to make cucumber infused vodka. The leering and following around made me really uncomfortable. My friend and I left the store without buying anything. I have a suggestion for yuppified transplants who want to move/do business in traditionally black/brown neighborhoods of New York City: - Abandon the narrow attitudes from whence they came. Maybe they work back home, but they don't bode well here. - Don't treat the demographic population like idiots or criminals, and you'll do fine. I'm not really sure why there's below average ratings on here. They are pretty old reviews. I'm here to say currently this place is awesome! I've only been able to go during evening hours but I've been there about 6 times now. Every time I grab a bottle from this place I am sooo pleased! Most wine shops have either great overpriced wine and terrible customer service. Or they have great customer service and terrible wine. BTL they have amazing customer service! They greet you the second you walk in the door. They stop what they're doing and help you. If they're helping someone else they still stop what they're doing and let you know that they'll be right with you. On top of all those friendly vibes I usually don't know what I want to drink but usually I want something very dry and oaky. Everything they recommend is worth trying and never disappoints! They always nail exactly what I was looking for! Pricing isn't bad... I mean u can get a decent bottle for like $12. I mean that's not a lot. I love cheap Trader Joes wine but first you get what you pay for and second there's no trader joes in this area. Which really sucks. BTL has become my go to wino shop in the area. I strongly advise everyone to give them a shot! read more

First of all, I have written one other yelp review in my life so I don't go around complaining about every little thing and I don't take it lightly. With that said, I am very disappointed in the customer service at BTL Harlem. I have been a customer there for about 3 years and rarely buy from anyone else uptown. I haven't always enjoyed shopping there as I feel like some people that have worked there over the years have been very condescending and outright rude. So now I mostly order online for delivery. Recently I tried to return a bottle that was corked, the wine was faulted. It wasn't as obvious as most but the wine was not as it should have been, especially if you'd had it before, which I had many times. I was looking to exchange the bottle for another of the same. I called ahead to make sure it would be ok and they said it would be. So I walked 20+ blocks to make the return. When I arrived (although it was a week after my phone call- family emergency) they acted like they had no idea what I was talking about. She took the bottle out back and came back to say "they" didn't think anything was wrong with it and they wouldn't honor the exchange. Someone outback was calling the shots, didn't even come out to speak to me. No one asked what I thought was wrong with the wine. No one wanted to discuss it, which I find odd for a wine shop that seems to be interested in the world of wine. They treated me like I was an idiot who had no idea what I was talking about and like I was trying to pull one over on them. I wasn't going to volunteer this information but I have been in the hospitality industry for over 20 years and working as a wine professional for close to 15 of those years. For the record, this bottle retailed at $12.99 which means their cost was probably around $6. The markup doesn't bother me, that's part of the business. What bothers me is their short sidedness. I am, was, a loyal customer who was unhappy with a purchase. Just since the shutdown in March my purchases online and in the store are about $2,000. After I expressed my unhappiness with the situation they offered me a 10% discount on my next purchase, which is basically the tax. Plus I already get a 10% discount since I order by the case. They should have honored the exchange no matter what they thought of me or the wine. In the end, they'll lose much more money than the cost of a value bottle by alienating their customers. It's really too bad, I like their selections, I think it's thoughtfully curated. I like supporting local businesses. I like their restaurant across the street, I've been there many times, but feel mixed about going there now. I don't like being treated poorly as a customer so I will now choose to shop elsewhere. read more

The employee proceeds to mumble "is there something you normally get here" I replied I'm sorry I can't hear you, he rolled his eyes and shouted "is there something you always get here!" And I said, no I've never been here, to which he rolled his eyes to and said "so no there isn't." So I proceeded to walk out and take my business back to Pompette, where they are always sweet, helpful and friendly, not condescending. read more

I would love to give this location zero stars but that's not an option. I am a loyal btl Bronx customer and have been for awhile including spreading the word about btl Bronx specifically to my coworkers who are teachers in the neighborhood. I tried to make an order for delivery from btl Harlem and the level of rudeness is off the charts. I ordered before the opening time which seems to have confused them. I was in my friends apt waiting for the order and when it didn't arrived called the location. The first person I spoke to a woman was very nice and tried to help. Turns out I made a mistake on the phone number which is why we missed the delivery, absolutely understood my bad. When I called and changed the number I was assured it would come in ten minutes. Thirty minutes later no order and then when I called whatever gentlemen's I spoke to was rude and dismissive, we corrected our mistake there is now no need for it to take an hour to deliver. When I called once again to check I was told my order was cancelled the delivery driver came to us, but even though I was asked to change my number no one called my phone to get the order. I don't blame this on the delivery driver I blame this on the rude gentlemen on the phone who would not listen did not want to hear our concerns and when I called told me he had cancelled my order and my complaint was "not a problem for him" I hope this spot does not represent btl Bronx because it was a terrible experience and to blame the customer even when the customer then corrects the mistake is ridiculous. read more

No idea why they have poor reviews. I have only had the best of costumer service here. Whoever is saying "just scan the bottle" and doesn't want to hear about wine... go somewhere else! Everyone working at BTL truly cares about wine, and they want to help you get the best bottle(s) for YOU and your palette. Wine should be experienced, not just downed like a plastic bottle of vodka. I've been here a couple of times since it's the closest store to my apartment. There are some good wines here, but to be honest, this is not my first choice for grapes. The wines are just too expensive. I think that this store thinks it's in another neighborhood, perhaps Montclair, NJ. BTL could become my regular wine store IF they stocked some more bottles under $15. Maybe even under $12! They're out there, people! I'm about to get a hernia from dragging bottles of Nero D'avola ($10 a bottle!) from the store by my office near Wall Street. "Cheap and tasty" isn't anything to be ashamed of. They have a somewhat limited but great selection of wines from all over the world, and are especially knowledgeable about French wines.
