This was my first visit to the establishment. The shop is huge with wide isles & well lit. I was directed by the cashier to see someone else to help me out with the champagne. Hi, I was sent to see you...I want the 18 bottles of Drappier Carte D'or that you have in stock. His response, let me check...no only 11. I said, last night the gentlemen said you had 18 bottles in stock. He didn't bother checking just said the system is wrong. I said I'll take whatever you have, he gets a cart and starts passing the bottles, one just slipped out of his hand and fell to the floor. I said I can't pick it up I have a bad back. His response just floored me "why didn't you bring someone to help you?". I expected help here was my reply, he shut up. At the register I took out one bottle out of the cart and said I have eleven total. You have to take all of them out was the response. OK took all of them out. Next came another cashier with an attitude - how you going to carry them. My response they come in cases of 6. Ok I give you two case, again with an attitude like she was doing me a favor...another guy helped me to the car without an attitude. I called the next day and asked if they have any Drappier in stock, sure as hell yes, they did have 6 more bottles in stock. A great time to spend when looking for imports and that exclusive piece to add to your bar. I love their prices, and their specials, I hate the fact that I actually moved to Brooklyn, and left the west side...because I no longer have the option of PJ when I need it. The staff is always helpful and kind to their patrons. I always appreciate the younger folks, getting hired at the establishment and given opportunities to work, and establish themselves in life. I've been coming to PJ Wine for almost a decade. As of late my experiences have consistently went downhill solely off of one individual. This individual is one of their security guards by the name of Pablo. EVERY time I walk in IF Pablo is there he surely finds his way next to me. He'll stay next to me throughout the majority of my shopping. I noticed this a few months ago but just brushed it off. Today when I walked in he was at the front door (typical for security). I make my way to the back wall as always because I prefer Prosecco and Rose (stocked on back wall). I'm having a phone conversation really not paying attention, look to my right and guess who's standing there?! Pablo! After selecting my 3 bottles I made my way over to him, asked if he's security which he confirmed then asked his name. I then made my way to the register, paid for my items because DUH I'm not a thief (I'm actually a wine club member of theirs) and spoke with the manager Cindy to complain. I've watched several people walk out with all different types of bottles which go unnoticed because he's so focused on me with my Prosecco and Rose. Hopefully Cindy will have a chat with him and today is the last time I'm stalked while shopping. I've been going there for 20 years. I've never been too pleased by the greeting from the cashiers. I've always noticed how they are very personable and friendly to Spanish and white customers but completely indifferent to others. Regardless, I would go there because the selection is very good. However, today was my last time ever going there. Suddenly, I'm asked for ID while using a DEBIT CARD! I'm like I've never been asked for ID before, and this is a debit card. Me entering my PIN is my ID. The girl insisted I show ID - so I did. Then, I look to the other register and the white guy hasn't been asked for ID. Needless to say I spazzed out. If ID is a policy, then it' should be a universal policy. But, since Dominican women are generally racist towards black people, and will sacrifice the owners business to enforce their racism and bias, I was singled out. So, if you aren't Dominican or white, I would recommend patronizing another establishment, even if it's more expensive on principle. This is a massive store and everything is here, something for everyone including a wide range of gins, sakes and ciders. Champagne selection was a little limited but overall an impressive collection. We had no need of service as we were grab and go but in a place this size helpful, knowledgeable and welcoming staff would almost certainly guarantee more sales for them. Great selection, terrible customer service. Even though this place is as convenient as you can get - a 2 block walk from my home - I always go elsewhere. Security: The last time I was there, the security guard immediately began to follow me because I had a shopping cart. He didn't speak English, so he just tried to grab my cart while he grunted at me. I gave him the cart which he placed next to all the other customers' bags at the entrance. He then proceeded to WALK AWAY a total of 10 times in the 10 minutes I was in the store. So basically, they don't want you to steal from them, but they have no problem if someone steals from YOU. I spent a lot less because there was no guarantee that my packages were safe. False advertising: Their website clearly states that if you buy 6 bottles, then you qualify for a 10% discount. After I chose 6 bottles of the same wine, the sales guy on the floor told me that I had to buy 12 bottles not 6 to qualify for the discount. See attached screen grab. Best place to go for a good deal on alcohol. They have a huge selection and are efficient in getting people in and out during holiday shopping times. The best tip I can give is to drive there with a friend/family member so that someone can watch the car because parking certainly is scarce in the area and it just doesn't make sense to go shopping for huge bottles of alcohol and having to walk several blocks to and from your car. Usually that happens on the weekends so definitely try to stop by on those days if you're looking for something new to try. The lines move pretty quickly but on holidays it does get pretty crazy. The prices are very reasonable they even have specials and great prices. Lines are separate for cash and credit I would say the cash line moves faster since no one ever carries cash. No welcoming attitude, no one around to make recommendations or remotely interested in customer service. They're there to check you out and that's it. Their "buy 3 wines get X % off sale" and "rewards" program is also bogus. I've yet to find the right combo (wines that end on .96, .97, or .98?) to get their famous discount and giving them your email doesn't get you points or anything. I normally shop in NJ, however this store is as good as it gets here. The prices are very good too and wont break the bank. Also there is no shady people and a bulletproof glass to shop through. Lines move quickly here and the staff knows where everything is and will help you located it in case you cannot or don't know where to look. I suppose most people would call PJ's a wine warehouse. But I would differ with them and say that it falls somewhere between a wine shop and a warehouse store. It's larger than any wine shop, but smaller than a warehouse store like BJ's. What it is though, is a no frills store to buy wine inexpensively. Prices here are really pretty good for what they have on hand. And what they have on hand can be hit and miss. They offer a large selection of wines that are for the most part, inexpensively priced. You will find that if you compare PJ's prices to to those in your neighborhood wine shop, the prices will usually be two to four dollars cheaper on bottles under twenty dollars. It's also worth mentioning that they have a huge selection of wines under $10. Though the selection here is broad, there is a slight lean toward South American wines. But that is to be expected in this neighborhood. It's not the place I would go to find that really good bottle of wine for a special occasion, but for the most part what you will find here is decent. Even though, I think a lot of what they have here are cases they got a nice price break on from distributors to move out of their warehouse. I visit PJ's several times a year to buy certain wines that I know they have in stock and I can get at a discount price. However, when I'm looking for a new wine adventure, I still go to a smaller shop. read more

I've loved this establishment and have been shopping here for 14 years until I had a customer service issue with the manager Maria. The cashier Kiara bagged my 3 bottles of wine with 1 paper bag. As soon as I left the store the bag broke resulting in one of the bottles breaking. I immediately return to the store and speak to Kiara and she hands off my receipt to Ashley and then Ashley hands it off to Maria. Kiara now leaves by the time management has come over. I didn't want my money back but I wanted a replacement as the inefficient bagging was the cause. Maria instructed me that she couldn't give everyone a bottle Mami when this happens. Not only did she blame me for the bag breaking she never offered a replacement bag to decrease the chance of more product damage. All the other customers were now leaving with doubled paper bags as I was trying to sort this issue out. What Maria did provide was an intimidation tactic by having security come over and two of her stock guys holding blades surround me as we were trying to discuss the matter at hand. She claimed she could help me on Monday 8/3, but upon speaking to her today 8/5 she was to busy and doesn't know if Kiara was ever called to resolve the issue. Via on line and actual calls I and the manager George determined that there were 3 bottles of Jacuesson Cuvee 738 in stock. These wines were to be gifts for family and was the main reason I traveled to the store. When I arrived from Downtown. There was 1 bottle in store even though the store inventory said 3. Since I was also interested in a Hewitt Cabernet that was not on the shelves. A store employee (who was a looked like a teenager with long hair and glasses) was able to find a different bottle of 2011 Hewitt Cabernet stored in the basement after asking 3 other employees who had no idea even what the bottle was and waiting about a half an hour. The two other Jacquesson 738 bottles which were gifts were determined not in stock with broken or stolen. There is no parking lot. Cars are double and triple parked. Most employees are drinking Coffee out of plastic shot glasses and seem to be more concerned about blasting Bachata music rather than helping customers. I was really upset that I had traveled out of my way. I had conformed via telephone calls and on line that the bottles were in the store. I had traveled a log way to get to this store and I was fuming that I had wasted my time. Eventually I found the store manager who had no idea how to help me or make it right. The same guy employee with long hair and glasses who helped me find the Hewitt told the manager that "i should buy the wine or not and then get the F**k out of the store in plain English. 0 customer service 0 atmosphere 0 knowledgeable employees Subsequent calls to the wine manager George only confirmed my problem. George basically was non apologetic and agreed with me basically stating that the store was bout discounts nothing more or nothing less. Lesson learned stick to the standards Astor Place Wines, Sherry-Lehmann Wine & Spirits, Park Avenue Liquors Ect. its simply not worth the hassle!!! Oh, PJs. How many times have I pulled a muscle carrying back bottles and bottles through Ft. Tryon Park to chez moi? This place certainly is a "warehouse", with a very very large selection of wines, especially Spanish wines, but French and Italian wines too. The US pinot noir selection, as well as wines from South Africa, is pretty small, and there's nothing from Uruguay, for example. (I hope this changes, there are some nice Uruguayan wines and they're good for the money) But that's okay, there are many wine shops to supplement PJs around the city, but PJs is a great place to start to build up your 'cellar' if you so desire, a good go-to place. It would be a schlep if you live downtown, but the PRICES are among the best that I've seen anywhere, very fair, it's hard to find lower prices anywhere in the city. Believe me, I've looked all over. Many times. Repeatedly. The staff is honest, knowledgable, each person with a specialty, maybe, and happy to chat and even direct you away from pricier bottles if something cheaper is better. Open on Sundays [phew!] and sometimes lines get long, and certain bottles aren't in the register's scanner and require manual searching/entering, but that's a small complaint. The wine and spirits selection in this place is unbelievable. This guy's have really large selection of vodkas, gins, rums, liquors, bourbons, whiskeys and so much more. I am particularly in love with their wine selection. You can find wines from almost every wine producing country in the world at reasonable prices. You can find good buys in the 10-15$ range as we'll as the higher end stuff for special occasions like Brunello di Montalcino from Italy, and Cabernet sauvignons from the new world . This is by far my favorite place for everyday wine. PS. They have a point system that I've been using but I have no idea about how they plan to reward their loyal customers. After being put on hold for 30 minutes the associate came back on the line to tell me it was too busy to give us a price. When I asked for the manager I was told she was too busy to answer the phone.
