We moved to the Upper West Side a little over a year ago, and despite this not being our closest wine/liquor shop, we always walk the extra distance for the amazing selection and customer service. I love the tags throughout the store that give more info on the vineyards and their ownership. I want to give a special shout out to Amanda (who I assume is a manager), who always has such brilliant recommendations and a wonderful depth of knowledge about not only the stock, but also the wider industry. Her recent tasting event showcasing female-owned distilleries was such a thoughtful highlight to happen upon, and introduced us to Harridan Vodka, which we bought a bottle of on the spot. I've only been here once and it was brief but I'd come again. I was looking for a specific burbon and the first shop (which was actually much closer and convenient) just gave off a bad vibe. I walked in and didn't feel comfortable spending my money there or just being there in general. So I called this place and the person on the line was friendly enough, let me know what I was looking for was there and was kind enough to even check the price for me. When I got there I was able to meet and thank her in person. The place had a nice feel, good vibes plus I didn't feel like I'd end up on the Next 48 or anything. Nothing out of the ordinary was done, just kindness, and good customer service. Westside Wines is a really nice wine and spirits shop on 83rd and Columbus. They have a large selection of almost anything you would need to make a cocktail or to enjoy some vino for that special night. The staff is very friendly and always ready to help. When we visited they were doing some wine and spirit (sweet vermouth) tasting. We didn't join this time, but will likely join in the future. They have a fun cocktail recipe poster on the outside of their store that I always see people snapping pics of. Check it out if you're in the neighborhood. read more

I have to say that if I could give them a better review beyond 5 stars I would. Ever since these new owners (Mike and Reina) took over its like nothing about the kindness and welcoming has differed. They are definitely different but in a great way. It doesn't matter how cheap the bottle is or how you look, you will always be welcome and it keeps me coming back. We saw this wine shop at the corner of Columbus and 83rd Street and popped in to purchase some wine. The shop offers a wide assortment of wines from all over the world. They are open from Monday to Thursday from 11 am to 9 pm, Friday and Saturday from 11 am to 10 pm and Sunday from noon till 8 pm. They do offer free delivery with a minimum purchase of $25.00 in a limited area. We actually went twice to this shop because the wine was so good and the staff was really helpful in suggesting the wines. We found the prices to be very reasonable. read more

Clean shop that is pretty well-organized. A little light on inventory - not sure if maybe I was just there right before a shipment or after a big rush on wine. I liked that it was organized by country but thought it was weird that some pretty major countries were missing. I also wish there had been wine from emerging regions like India and China. The man who was working in the shop was a bit aloof and even when he was doing nothing didn't seem interested in helping me. The woman helped me in my quest for orange wine. They had two (although one is just a Pinot Gris with 8 hours skin contact so I'm not sure if that's really orange). There's a dog in the store. Now, I am a dog person. Hardcore. I have two rescue dogs and like them more than I like most people --- they sleep in my bed, even. But this dog isn't very friendly and was on the counter at times which, sorry, is gross. Yes, it is well groomed and has a bow in its hair (this might be part of my bias) but I just don't think any place that has food for sale should also have a dog on the counter. Walking around or on a bed, okay. But please don't pick it up and let its ass touch where I'm going to put anything that belongs to me. There are a LOT of wine places in NYC. I'd give this one another try if I were in the neighborhood but I wouldn't go to the UWS just for it. read more

I've only been here once, but West Side Wine had a varied selection of some interesting wines, and things I don't often see in other stores. (i.e. Valle dell'Acate Il Frappato) I think this is how it should be, with each wine store offering its own finds, interests, opinions, etc... The prices seemed on the reasonable side, cheaper than what I expected, perhaps a dollar or two more than I'm used to paying up at PJs for the wines that I was familiar with. Friendly service, selection not overwhelming but just right for a neighborhood-y store. (P.S. Wish it was my neighborhood) read more

I bought two bottles of wine recently at Westside Wines. In an unfortunate accident, I broke one of the two bottles on their checkout counter in the process of paying for my purchase. To my horror, the glass shards shattered all over the counter and the wine contents spilled all over it and their floor. The manager and woman at the checkout counter could not have been nicer or more understanding. They cleaned up my mess without making me feel even worse about what I had done. Although I repeatedly asked and then demanded to pay for the broken wine bottle, they said I absolutely should not pay for my mistake. I told them I would write up this review as my way of saying thanks. People often complain about bad service, but really exceptional service also should be rewarded. Really solid selection of wines and well organized. I have only been in once, but I'd come back again to find something that isn't your everyday wine. They had a good variety of price points too -- my level of $10-12/bottle, as well as nice sancerre's for ~$22. The staff seemed helpful, though i didn't actually ask for assistance. read more

He got up, and pulled a few of his favorites off the shelf, and spoke to me about each of them. Very helpful! I grew up in Manhattan, and moved to Brooklyn a few years ago. THIS is what I think of when I hear the words "wine/iquor store"...unfortunately, in Brooklyn we have two options: sketchy place with bulletproof glass, and high-end boutique with only local small-batch offerings. It seems like a pretty simple business model, yet is apparently difficult to duplicate in the outer boroughs.... West Side Wines has a little of everything, from $13 bottles of wine to "cellar-worthy" vintages. There are handwritten tags around the store to highlight staff favorites. The store is laid out more or less logically. I know absolutely nothing about wine, but managed to find my way around the store and find something that looked nice and fit my budget. They also have a decent liquor selection that ranges from basics to more unusual choices, and again at a variety of prices. The service was a little sleepy -- no one offered to help me find anything -- so that's really the only thing that was missing. Brooklyn liquor merchants could learn something -- and Manhattanites, remember to be thankful for what you got! read more

I live right next to this place, and I was slightly terrified to go inside because it looks slightly expensive. However, there are wines for all sorts of budgets in here - definitely a relief! This will be my regular spot now. The workers are very friendly and knowledgeable. The atmosphere and storefront are very nice and trendy looking in appearance. All sorts of wine available chilled as well. The only downside is that they close at like 9pm, so I usually can't stop in if I'm walking home after having class downtown. I love this place. The new owners have a well curated selection of wines for most tastes and are happy to share their knowledge. For instance, you're not going to find your favorite big brand name bottles here but if you tell them what you kind of wine you prefer, they'll happily recommend something that is similar. I live a block away from here and Saturday afternoon in the pre-Irene frenzy realized I had water and food and a full bath tub but was going to need copious amounts of wine to make it through. I called at 3pm and he said "yes, we're open, but only for another two hours, max". That is customer service people, being open when you are most needed. The store has an interesting selection, with a lot of wines you don't usually see, and not a lot of the ones you do (a good thing, it's refreshing). I am a frequent costumer of West Side Wines. The staff, specifically Andy, The Wine Guy, is what make this a 5 star establishment. He is knowledgeable about wine, and able to make recommendations based upon your individual tastes and budgets. Selection wise, they do a great job of getting new and different wines in, and keeping old favorites as well, I never feel like I am limited to a small selection of wine. Also, this is vital part of the neighborhood. The daily changes to the chalk board messages are always interesting and often cause me a jaded New Yorker to smile, as do the frequent blogging posting. West Side Wine is my neighborhood place to go for wine. They don't seem to be that much into alcohol, which is cool with me because, like me, wine is their thing. Even though I am pretty knowledgeable I can still get lost with the multitude of choices of varietals, countries, regions etc. When I ask about a wine I always get a specific answer. You know how some people have a hard day of work, and go to the spa and unwind, and once they get to the spa, they immediately feel calm and like their hard day never happened? That's this place for me. I'm not sure if it's the tasteful decorating, the cute chihuahua, or the chilled mini bottles of rosé, but this place is great. The selection is of a reasonable size. I'm sure some might prefer a larger selection, but they have just the right amount so that you aren't overwhelmed, but can also always find anything in whatever price range you want.
