I don't do a lot of international travel, but in Italy, France and Germany, free parking, wifi, and an air conditioner in the rooms is a luxury unless you are at a major airport hotel. I have week long testing / competition sessions at Hockenheim at times in August, this year will be the 5th trip in the last 7 years. I stayed in Hockenheim the first time at the Ramada, it had no air, parking was not free, and it was somewhat cramped. the Leonardo (used to be a holiday inn) is in a great location and the town of Waldorf has all the conveniences I need, bank, grocery stores, restaurants, and a few cool little bars. Walking in felt like stepping back in time. I doubt much has changed about this place in decades, and that's entirely a compliment. We were seated near a window and the ambiance was everything you'd want, cozy, warm, and genuinely inviting. I loved the feel of it. Our server was very kind. Her English was limited, but she was gracious and patient as I attempted to speak German, and was generous enough to tell me I did well. It added to the charm of the whole experience. Now, the food. The potatoes that came with the schnitzel were the best German potatoes I've ever had. The schnitzel itself was delicious, exactly what you'd hope for. The cheese spaetzle was a highlight as well, rich and satisfying. Plan on sharing it. The one miss was the pizza my sister-in-law ordered, which was fine but felt out of place. Stick to the German classics and you won't be disappointed. Would love to return if I ever make it back to Heidelberg.

Our dinner was really good. We did have reservations. We even enjoyed some non-alcoholic beer. We had apple strudel for dessert, which was also really good. We were staying at the hotel, so just had to go upstairs after dinner. For the hotel - the only difficulty was the check in. We weren't sure where to go to check in. So we ended up asking the wait staff. We walked through the restaurant with our luggage to the the check in desk. Our room was comfortable and homey. The door required an old fashioned key to open. You can't beat the location being right by the old bridge.

We ended up staying in Vita, a 55 square meter apartment (the biggest they have; the others are 40 and 50 square meters), which has a bedroom with two twin beds pushed together king bed-size, a sitting room, a full kitchen with kitchen table for eating space, a dining room with table, and an enormous bathroom that rather dwarfs its shower stall. Also there's a balcony off the bathroom. The only thing this lacks as an apartment is onsite laundry, but there's arrangements with a service to pick up and deliver. Michael and Jennifer have gone above and beyond to provide service at a high level of care, talking thru maps and points of interest, helping us find needed items (there's always something we didn't plan for), and even including with our room a Speyer card for touring key places in town at a discount. They are awesome and their apartment is as awesome as they are.
