I was put in the "historical wing" of the hotel, with limited access by lift, but no worry, there are young staff with strong arms to help me with my suitcase :-). Soon after checking in, I received a visit from their guest relations manager, who brought a large bottle of mineral water, a small box of chocolates and a coupon for drinks at their bar. She also booked the airport shuttle for me - well, basically one can trouble her for any needs. The room itself, I believe, is newly renovated, with crispy clean bedding, soft, fluffy and shining white towels (very important for yours truly). If you don't mind walking, exit the hotel, turn right, and you can easily walk to the old town, to either climb up to the castle (by cable car) or wander across the old bridge to tread the "Philosopher's Walk". And you'd basically pass by dozens of restaurants, cafes, bakeries, creameries ... one won't ever go hungry! I booked my room with breakfast. It's a decent sized buffet, with every possible option for a Western breakfast - cold cuts, hot dishes, soft boiled eggs (one should eat it out of the cute egg cup provided nearby), salads, muesli, fruits, desserts, and lots and lots of breads, with packets of butter and individually jarred condiments (peanut butter, jam, honey, etc). There is a wide range of leafy tea selection, as well as juices and other drinks. One can also order a-la-carte omelets, French toast and Shakshouka etc., at no extra charge. This could be any Holiday Inn and any part of the world and you would not notice any difference. That's not a bad thing, especially if you are seeking a business friendly property to camp out in for a few days that offers every amenity from a business center to room service. But for me, I prefer a little more local atmosphere. Sometimes imperfection or quirkiness allows for a better overall travel experience. If you are hosting a business meeting or just want a comfortable bed before your early flight out of Frankfurt the next day, then this might be exactly what you are looking for. Side note, the Lufthansa Bus stops here and takes you north to the airport (about 1 hr 15 minutes).

If you are sharing a bed, you should still use your own comforter. That's probably one of my favorite impressions about the German hotels. Separate beds, pushed together, separate comforters. I bet you'd have fewer divorces if you implemented that in the States. Internet is free of course. The hotel is convinently situated in the center, so you can walk to everything including the beautiful Luisenpark, which is HUGE! I loved the walk about and the boat ride in the park. Imagine staying in a hotel that is within walking distance to it. Another good part about the hotel is its easy access to the river, there are two and you can turn right and then right and you'd be right by the running path. I Ate at at least 12 different restaurants all within walking distance (under a KM) from the hotel front door. For American tourists a KM is a little more than half a mile. That same radius get you two two different tram stations where for 2.7 Euros you can ride the whole system in one direction. And if you are into shopping you hit the high end to the smallest mom and Pop shop, again in the same radius. Two groups will find the Leonardo lacking. If you spend a lot of time in your room, you wont find that the rooms are very spacious. Some of the furniture arrangements are outright cramped and that's for European standards, not considering what the typical US chain hotel offers space-wise. English only speakers also wont find a lot of television selection either. I think only CNN international and BBC had English programming. Gym Junkies will also have their frustration. While they have a small pool, something that not many European hotels I have stayed in have the exercise equipment is pretty sad. One treadmill, one elliptical machine and one stationary bike is that you will have an opportunity to use for a calorie burn. And the gym setting is kinda sad. Reminds me of a 1950's fat farm. I can't imagine anyone thinks the gym decor is even close to modern. Another highlight; the Breakfast buffet, which is well stocked and has a lot of EU and US choices. There will certainly be something there for everyone. So don't stay in you room, there's a lot to see in Manheim, Enjoy he eating and shopping nearby. Heidelberg Marriott Hotel, Heidelberg, Germany…read more The Heidelberg Marriott Hotel is located on the riverbank of Heidelberg, just west of the city center. The front desk staff were very friendly and helpful. Eric checked me in quickly and thanked me for being a Marriott Elite member. He took the time to offer me a few different upgrades. In the end I chose the King room, balcony with river view. I rarely have a vehicle, but this time I did have a rental car. Parking is 25 Euro per day in their underground, covered garage. The room was screaming for renovation. The often-used wood areas of the furnishings were all worn down. The green carpet - well, I do not think I need to say anything more about that! The bed was hard as a rock, but the sheets were of good cotton quality as were the feather pillows. Without those quality sheets, this bed would have been very uncomfortable, as I prefer a softer bed. The bathroom was dark, and the wall tile reminded me of being at grandma's house! Aside from the decorative items, the room was very clean. The balcony was absolutely wonderful as the day I visited the weather was beautiful. I spent a few hours sitting on that balcony getting some work done while enjoying the view of the river. This property has a club level lounge for elite members. It was open until 2300 daily and had an evening reception with wine and beer. The lounge also had a large outdoor deck, also with great views of the river. The lounge attendant was very attentive. The food offerings were a bit bland, but the wine was good! This property has a very nice restaurant in the lobby and an indoor pool is also available. This property really tries hard with the hotel it has. If the rooms were updated, I could easily give this property a 5-star rating. For now, I will be rating this hotel with 4 stars.
