Even though I live in Los Angeles, I'm a Grand Ledge girl at heart, and any chance I can get I stop in for a cut and color with Todd. He is amazing and has tons of experience - no seriously, I've known him since about 1986, when I rocked a Rod Stewart hair cut, and mullets were all the rage! He does a wonderful job with color, and I'm always happy with my cuts and colors. Normally, he'll do 2-3 colors in foils for a really diverse look. He even did my hair on my wedding day, which turned out great! They offer all kinds of services, as well as mani pedis, and their prices are really competetive for such a great salon. I highly recommend giving Todd or Katie a try!

I have two co-workers who also get their hair done here, and we're all really happy with the salon. I see Collette. She always gives me a great cut (no easy feat, because I have really, really thick hair with a sort of messy, kinky wave in spots). She's also great at color -- awhile ago, I decided I wanted to go from red back to my natural blonde, and she was awesome at gradually transitioning my hair from one color to the other. (I didn't want to completely strip my hair all at once, and I didn't want to just grow out the red.) The salon is nice -- it's largeish and has a good selection of products. The atmosphere isn't particularly unique or anything, however.

Apparently mullets are her specialty and instead of enhancing my naturally curly hair she cut a mullet on me so short that my curls couldn't even form. I actually cried. I had to go to my previous stylist so that she could fix it and the only way she could do that was to cut my hair shorter. It went from curly below my shoulders to so short I can't even put a ponytail in. I did email the owner and sent before and after pictures. She refunded my money and offered to personally cut my hair next time I needed a cut. She was the only positive in an extremely upsetting situation.

That seemed reasonable assuming they had talented and capable stylists. In fact, Grand River Barber Co, a local competitor, has several incredibly talented barbers that charge $28 because of demand. I got a basic men's cut, expecting to be charged $28, and they charged me $49. That's a 75% increase! However, the owner told me that if I did not give a better rating that she would not do my hair. So I raised the rating, but I ALWAYS felt guilty for lying to soothe her ego and for my ease. Is Heat a 5/5 salon like David Mallett of New York? Absolutely not. As far as the local Lansing area goes? I would say Douglas J would get my best vote. Heat Salon is convenient for members at The M.A.C., not up-to-date on its website and pretty good.
