As normal, chose softball with 12' arc. Machine pitched 8 of 15 softballs acceptably (not perfect strikes but OK). The other 7 pitches hit the lower wheel, that pitches baseballs, causing softball to nosedive. The manager/owner was kind enough to reset the machine and give me credit for unhittable pitches. I thanked him. Again, swiped my card. First 8 pitches were fine, then the next 7 sporadically hit the baseball wheel. I decided to move to the second cage. Machine in second cage performed normally by pitching 13 of 15 balls acceptably. In my considered opinion, this is normal pitching for D-Bats Solon. In between hitting, I was loudly chastised by manager/owner for picking out softballs on which to spend my credits. He is correct that I choose softballs that are round and have intact covers. Even with being picky, the pitching machine(s) has never pitched 15 hittable balls. I am OK with a few errant pitches. If I am not picky about the softballs, then there are more errant pitches. Manager/owner mistakenly blamed me for the numerous softballs on the floor behind the hopper in the second cage. I do clean up after my last round. If I misinterpreted this incident, would happily discuss another point of view. Of interest, as I was leaving a gentleman was hitting slow-pitch in last cage. I observed then asked and he confirmed that some pitches were not hittable.

We saw the Rubber Ducks were in town (or, is it Rubberducks, all one word?), so we figured we'd take in a game. We've been to several minor league ballparks in the past, but Canal Park might literally be the best one so far! It's right in the heart of downtown Akron, which doesn't initially "feel" like where baseball should be played. (Historically speaking, though, it's spot-on!) But, this place fits in perfectly with its surroundings. Because it's a smaller stadium, you're almost on the field, it feels! There doesn't appear to be a bad seat in the joint, and it is very easy to walk around and soak in the atmosphere. My one minor complaint was how small the team store is, but that's honestly kind of true at most minor league places. They had to limit the number of patrons, though, but the line moved quickly. No more than 5 minutes tops. The concessions were out of the ordinary and out of this world in some cases! We had read up on them before going. Be sure to look up "canal park extreme food" before going. Trust me, you'll thank me. At least you'll know what you're in for! We got "The Screamer," which is a 21-scoop 5-pound sundae served in a full-sized batting helmet. Yes, you read that correctly. No, I am not making that up. I added the picture to verify that I did not go insane. It was WAY TOO MUCH for the three of us to even put a dent in! We might have gotten through 40% of it... maybe... but I don't think so. It's a bit of a shame, though, because we wound up wasting a lot of it. If you're going to order this, be sure to bring at least 6 people who don't mind eating out of the same giant bowl. Maybe 4 really hungry people? Good luck. They have other extreme foods there, but we weren't able to get to any others. Shot our bolt on the sundae! But, anyway... Concession prices are very affordable, at least compared to major league prices. You can definitely find some bargains here as well. So, you have an intimate setting, reasonable prices, great seats, extreme foods, and a great ticket prices. I don't know what more you could ask for. This was an absolutely wonderful experience, one that we would readily do again without question!

Upon entering, I realized that the facility needs some serious repair, mainly the roof that is tearing apart. The roof of the indoor tennis courts is degrading fast. Pieces of the roof are falling off unto the court surfaces. Before I arrived to play tennis, my friend told me that she asked a tennis staff member if the facility plans to update and fix the room but the staff member said no. That is surprising. For safety reasons, the roof should be fixed. Management doesn't appear to care about the tennis facility and it is unclear why this is the case. Perhaps they focus all their attention on their indoor soccer facility, who knows!
