It is a rather quiet English pub out in the country, with the rather charming interior that you would expect from a lot of these pubs. However, it also has a huge beer garden, which is delightful in summer, though I do have to admit that I've really only been in England during the summer so I haven't exactly experienced the worst that weather has to offer. The bar stocks some good ales but I opted for Old Mout Cider, a fruity little number that was perhaps a bit too easy to drink, hence a sore head this morning. There's a lovely beer garden out the back with picnic tables, parasols and plenty of grass space for kids to run around. Staff are friendly and the locals seem like decent folk ( I certainly didn't spot any track suits, which is always a good sign). Food wise, we were treated to a delicious buffet of Thai fish cakes, chicken wings, salad and pulled pork, which was delicious. So judging by this, I would imagine their everyday food menu is pretty good too.

If the whole place was uprooted, helicoptered into the city centre and dropped in the Wood/Fleet/Seel Street area it would be pounced on by dive bar aficionados and made their own. It contains all the same kinds of polished furniture, intermittent nutters and drinks offers that are found in town's bars but is placed in the last portion of Smithdown, before everything transforms into the wine bar-ish non-glamour of Allerton Road. The dominating dishes were fish orientated with a couple of dishes to share like a 50oz tomahawk steak for £65 or a huge lamb pie. We chose olives with large garlic crouton things for starters and for mains he had salmon with a mac n cheese with white truffles..myself a cod with berlotti beans and chicken wings Everything was cooked to perfection and presented beautifully! Half way munching through I heard a server offer a cocktail menu to someone so I pounced on that and ordered a Long island which was well-made. To finish we shared a peach and white chocolate cheesecake which once again was presented beautifully and tasted perfect. I would definitely return here, food is a little pricy but don't mind paying those sort of prices if the foods good..my only criticism is the slow inconsistent service.

I'd hasten to say that despite its turbulent history it's now become one of the better places to go for a relaxed pint or family meal. Its main draw has to be the restaurant, which serves fantastic food albeit to a mixed reception. I've heard some not so positive opinions but after my visit I was left feeling very satisfied. With TV chef Aiden Byrne at the helm the Church Green's kitchen has a lot to live up to and as a result I think this place suffers from its own hype. If you go there without expectations of Michelin quality food I'm sure you'll be contented. However, don't expect satisfaction to come cheaply. With mains ranging from a cool £22 to a mere £28 you'll have to do some pre-meal saving. On the pub side things are more reasonable, as drinks are fairly priced and its large outdoor area provides refuge for the smokers and summer time sun-lovers. Since it's conversion to gastro-pub however, it's somewhat lacking in general table space and is so for those wishing to sit and sip, it's probably better on weekends when the restaurant area is opened to the regular Joe. For me the only thing lacking is a decent selection of ales but that's just my taste. Never have the staff been uninviting or incapable and never have I felt like leaving early. So for a good social drink there aren't many places better. Definitely worth a try!

It's comfortable and relaxing and the beer is always good, cheaper than town too. Food is regular pub grub, not brilliant but what would you expect for 2 meals for ten pounds. No covered smoking area, everyone stands at the front door and they dont allow children at any time. Now, that might be the reason why this pub is quiet but in it's defence where it is situated is at a set of very busy traffic lights on the junction of Prestcot Road and Dunriding lane. The parking area is open at the front and at the back of the pub, not a safe place to take children.

I used to work in Chester a while back and was well aware of this hidden gem nestled in the picturesque Cheshire countryside. It was great to return last week whilst playing cricket at the adjacent Oulton Park cricket club. Only about half an hour away from Manchester this is a perfect spot to come for some lunch/dinner on your way back from Chester. Alternatively if you're a a petrol head like me, with Oulton park racing circuit just around the corner it can also act as a perfect pitstop on your way back after a few laps. Have yet to try the food but won't be long until that's rectified because the menu looks sensational. Highlights from it include the following. Pizza; 'The special one' (Goat's cheese, caramelised onions, rocket). Burger; 'The special one' (Cheese, beer soaked onions, gerkins, garlic mayo, special sauce, lettuce tomato relish) A special mention also for the Artisanal French cured meat platter (Yes that's as posh as it sounds) A selection of house charcuterie and paté from La Boucherie Candotto in South West France. In terms of drinks, not being a massive beer fan the only thing that stood out from the cocktail menu was 'The Egerton Refresher'. With Gin, home made marmalade, Mint, Elderflower and Pressed Apple Juice it looks right up my street.

We turned up at 6pm on a Saturday and struggled to get a seat, so get there early if you want a table to eat. The staff were very knowledgeable on all the beers and there was a great atmosphere.
