This was my first bed and breakfast, so maybe I'm just overly impressed with a b&b over a normal hotel. We were in Milwaukee just to stay here. It was my fiancé and I and our friends had another room here. Both rooms were great. We had the Gyneth Suite. The antique decor was beautiful. I've never stayed at a place that felt so unique. They have some snacks out, different cookies, and also mini fridges stocked with bottles of wine and various beer that is included with your room. As much as you'd like. It is great. The whole place feels like home. The keeper is very friendly. They give a small tour when you arrive, which was nice. If you know some of the history to the mansion, ask about it and they may show you some areas not usually open to guests. The breakfast in the morning was amazing. I can't wait to go back again. Such a beautiful place.

We had an AMAZING stay here, we'd come back to Milwaukee just for this place. Julie and Tom were fantastic hosts. We started off with a tour or the gorgeous Victorian mansion, many different artists have contributed to the beauty and ambiance of the Brumder. It comes with a rich history that Julie will tell you all about! The theater in the basement is amazing, we came on a Wednesday so we missed the show but on a weekend there is usually a full house and a show to see :) We stayed in the George suite, and the jacuzzi tub is eeeeverything! We picked a dvd and got to watch from the tub. I could have spent a full day in that tub, it's great. The beds were very comfortable and we had a great rest. We woke up to the smell of bacon and eggs, which was perfect. The breakfast was everything you could want from a B&B and Julie and Tom have great stories to share if you ask them. Ellie the dog is another memorable and welcoming presence at the Inn. We miss her already. 10/10 highly recommend if you want the experience a great and unforgettable stay in Milwaukee

I cannot speak for the bed and breakfast, but I attended a showing of "Miracle on 34th Street" in their basement theatre. The players were talented and were able to transform the small space with their acting abilities. As a play attendee, I was also permitted to walk around the first floor. I would come back for another play or the murder mystery night! Very charming and well kept mansion.

My bf and I took a a virtual tour of the 4 suites (Georgia, Gold, Gyneth, & Marion) on the site (www.milwaukeemansion.com) before deciding on the red suite, The Gyneth, because it was the most "Sybaris" looking one. The tri-level mansion sits on top of a hill, next to an intricate church (not too far from Marquette University), and features two outside benches on the front porch that overlooks a beautiful garden. (Perfect for lighting a smoke). We arrived at 5:30pm and were over-pleased that our funny and outspoken tour guide, Richard, was "moving right along" with facts about the original owner, downstairs theatre, and the mansion's ties to Chicago history. After we selected our preferred breakfast time; Richard left us for the rest of the night so that we could explore the mansion on our own. We peered inside 2 other rooms (except the one where another couple stayed), admiring the unique character of each design, layout, and antique items. Every room had two terry robes, bath & jacuzzi towels, and typical bar of soap, shampoo, and lotion. I felt like I was transported back in time but with the conveniences of a standard whirlpool jacuzzi and free wi-fi. There was complimentary red and white wine, home baked cookies, and a DVD collection on the second floor. I brought a glass of Cabernet to my red room and sifted through the pages of "A Victorian Bride's Handbook" on the chaise next to the fireplace while my boyfriend toyed around with the temperature of the hot tub. (Tip: bring your own rose petals & tall unscented candles). At 9:30am, we had strawberry & blueberry parfait, bacon, eggs, French toast, orange juice, and a wide selection of tea for breakfast. Normally, my boyfriend hates French toast but the chef, Tom, made the best he's ever had. The breakfast "nook" was filled with natural light and made for a great photo opp. For only an additional $10, you can book the double suite with a shared jacuzz, The George, so if you have a couple friend or in-laws you can invite them to celebrate your wedding anniversary, valentine's day, etc. I was charmed by the entire affair of sipping tea after a relaxing night. A bed and breakfast at the Brumder Mansion is the perfect fun and romantic getaway for city slickers like us.

Schuster Mansion Bed & Breakfast - Friends ready for Mollie's Tea

NOT family-friendly. In fact, not friendly AT ALL. My…read moresister and I started a Christmas tradition a few years ago of taking our daughters (ages 6 and 7) to afternoon tea. This year we decided to try Low Tea at the Schuster Mansion. I truly wish I had read the reviews beforehand, because we would not have booked -- and after our visit, I now understand why so many others had similar experiences. I noticed from those reviews, the owner seems to respond by gaslighting those who gave negative reviews- very unprofessional behavior. But here's our story anyways. From the moment we walked in, the tone was unwelcoming. The owner immediately made it clear that children were not really wanted there, repeatedly saying that "this is for adults" and that the girls would need to "act like adults." She even told them they should feel lucky to be allowed there at all. When my daughter simply looked at a bowl of candy near the entrance, she was sharply told that the candy was only for adults. Expecting young children not to even look at candy felt unreasonable and unnecessarily harsh. Absurd. We were told to wander while our coats were taken, but when we did exactly that, we were abruptly scolded and made to feel like we were doing something wrong. At that point, we honestly should have left. When we were seated, the tablecloth was still dirty and there were crumbs left behind. The owner continued to lecture us about how the space was meant for adults, insisting tea was meant for ages 8+. That directly contradicts their own website, which states that tea is appropriate for ages 5 and up. The atmosphere became so uncomfortable that my sister even asked the owner whether it would be better if we left. The tea service itself was disappointing. The tea was lukewarm at best even after being told that we had to wait while the tea was being warmed. We were never told what the desserts were, and we were not offered water refills. While seated, I also overheard the owner speaking negatively to other guests about a previous guest she had from England, which added to the uncomfortable feeling. The area near our table was dusty and clearly hadn't been cleaned in some time. We left as soon as we could -- and it felt like the owner was eager for us to go as well. The bright spot of the afternoon was a kind guest who came over specifically to tell us how polite and well-behaved our girls were. Afterward, we took the girls to Colectivo for hot chocolate, which they enjoyed far more. They even said they felt happy to finally be somewhere they could just be kids again. Overall, we felt like an inconvenience rather than paying guests. The tone from the owner was condescending and unfriendly, especially toward children, which made the entire experience stressful instead of special. We will not return and unfortunately cannot recommend Schuster Mansion to others.

Every detail, from the vintage Kleenex box covers to the antique books, frames, china, and lampshades, is thoughtfully curated. Modern comforts like a water filtration system, private parking, and WiFi seamlessly blend in (but you're sooo happy they're available!). Rick and Laura Sue are remarkable hosts, handling everything themselves--check-in, high tea, dinner, breakfast, even changing light bulbs. Please extend them grace as they are handling everything themselves- I had to check my fast paced city girl at the door;) This isn't your typical stay; it's uniquely special. Rick and Laura Sue's stories and warm hospitality make booking a room with them a lovely and unforgettable experience. They even taught me the difference between high tea and low tea;) I would absolutely stay here again when I visit Milwaukee!

My stay at The Iron Horse Hotel was extremely disappointing, especially for a property that markets…read moreitself as a boutique experience. From the moment I walked in, the lobby was overwhelmed with a heavy, Axe body spray-like scent--so strong it felt like walking through a middle school locker room. I assumed it was temporary and that my room would be a relief, but unfortunately, it was worse. The room smelled musty, like a house that hasn't been aired out in years. To make matters worse, the wallpaper was peeling off the walls, which is unacceptable for a hotel at this level. Beyond that, the overall cleanliness of the hotel was lacking. For a boutique property, I expected a much higher standard, but the space felt worn and not well-maintained. The bed was hard and uncomfortable, and the towels were rough--far from the soft, high-end feel you'd expect. The most concerning part of my stay, though, was waking up at 1:45 AM struggling to breathe. It genuinely felt like a reaction to something in the room--possibly mold or poor air quality. I initially thought I was getting sick, but after spending a few hours away the next day, I felt completely normal again, which makes it hard to ignore the room as the cause. If you have any respiratory sensitivities, be cautious. I contacted the front desk to explain the situation and was told checking out early without being charged for another night wouldn't be an issue. I even offered to return around noon so they could turn the room, but was told not to worry since they weren't sold out. When I returned later that day, there was no note, and the staff refused to honor what I had been told, citing the late checkout time. While I understand policies, the inconsistency and lack of follow-through were frustrating. I also dined at the hotel restaurant, which didn't help the experience. The food was overpriced for the quality--my salad was warm, fries were room temperature, and clearly sat out too long. Dessert was equally disappointing; the lemon tart was buried under an excessive amount of powdered sugar, making it unpleasant to eat. It's honestly a sad day when I transferred to a basic airport hotel--Hyatt Place Milwaukee Airport--and had a significantly better experience. The bed was more comfortable, the towels were actually soft, and even the shampoo and conditioner were noticeably better quality. On top of that, the Hyatt was spotless, which only made the lack of cleanliness at Iron Horse stand out even more. Overall, this stay fell far below expectations. Between the condition of the room, air quality concerns, cleanliness issues, and poor service recovery, I won't be returning.
