But, I think I've kept this awesome Burlington trail a secret for long enough. Let me start by saying that there is a park area with a playground and covered shelter and grill that looks nice and clean! On our most recent visit, there was a big cookout going on, and all of the parking spaces in the small lot were full. Don't be concerned if that's the case when you arrive ... there's plenty of street parking available in the surrounding neighborhood. And - even if the play area is full of people, we've never seen another person on the actual trail beneath the park. This trail is not for hiking amateurs. You can except a VERY steep climb back uphill at the end of your visit. There is a side path that's a little less steep - but it's very rocky with lots of switchbacks. I definitely recommend this trail for more experienced hikers. If you are a beginner and still want to check it out, just be sure you know what you're getting into. It's definitely worth the climb! My husband and I often bring our dogs for a quick spin around this trail, on both weekday and weekend mornings. When you get down to the actual river, there's plenty of wildlife to check out. Most recently, we enjoyed the blooming Honeysuckle plants, but steered clear of a few snakes in the water. Be sure to watch where you step. Check out Gunpowder Creek the next time you're looking for a unique nature hike with a bit of a challenge. You won't be disappointed.

On…read moreoccasion, I've been able to get friends to take me places or at least go for a drive to get me out. One such drive was to Whitewater State Park. Whitewater State Park was the 16th state park in Indiana and was founded in 1949. It's actually the third largest. It has 200 acre Whitewater Lake along with shoreline hiking, flat-water boating, swimming, fishing, and camping opportunities. It has 9 miles of horseback riding trails. The park area was originally purchased by Union, Fayette, Franklin, and Wayne counties to serve as a memorial for those lost during World War II. Additional activities include picnic areas with shelters (reservations required), interpretive naturalist services, 1 boat launch ramp at Whitewater Lake, bridle trails, cabins, fishing/ice fishing, hiking trails, canoe/paddleboat/rowboat rentals, swimming, and two marinas. Camping includes 236 electric sites, 45 non-electric, and 37 horsemen's primitive sites. There's a camp store, dumping station, and youth tent area. There are five hiking trails - all are considered moderate in difficulty. They range from 1-2.7 miles in length, though at least one also has a short loop. There really isn't a single trail that I'd say is accessible, though there are parts of trails I was able to access. That said, Whitewater in general isn't particularly wheelchair friendly other than in the more truly "public" areas. As an experienced wheelchair user, I doubt I'd head out on these trails alone. Whitewater hosts a variety of events throughout the year. While I wish it was more accessible here, I still consider this one of Indiana's more underappreciated natural gems.

Nestled 60 minutes south of Indianapolis in the north east corner of Brown County are man-made…read moresister lakes, Cordry and Sweetwater. These lakes are one of the best kept secrets in Indiana. The lakes are for the private use by the landowners of the properties within the district. Currently there are over 1000 homes and cottages surrounding the lakes. The Conservancy governs lake and wilderness of the district ensuring preservation of the natural beauty of the area. The lakes are among the clearest in the state. Recreational activities include boating, fishing, swimming and hiking. The is a small playground and beach near the Sweetwater dam. Amenities include a library, clubhouse, volunteer fire department and recycling center. There is no commercial business in the district except for one real estate business. The closest grocery is about a 30 minute drive except for a convenience store about five mikes north. The lakes are patrolled daily by safety patrol boats. The lakes have regulations to ensure guest safety. We have caught bass, blue gills and perch in the lake. There is a small hiking trail. Unfortunately there are no running or biking trails although runners and walkers frequently walk on the roads encircling the lakes. The area is also ideal for bird watching. Summer season is the most active with residents enjoying a multitude of water sports including water skiing, tubing, wake-boarding and swimming. The fall season offers spectacular color shows of changing leaves characteristic of Brown County. Winter is quiet and particularly lovey with snow on the lakes. Historic Nashville, Indiana is a short 30 minute drive.

Maybe it was my timing coming early in the year, but with a bit of maintenance, this trail could be…read morereally nice. There is a small parking lot on the higher ground, picnic tables and a really small shelter (no restrooms), and a really helpful map carved in wood near the entrance of the trails to show you the multiple loops that provide a mile long hike, but with lots of short cuts if you want to keep your hike brief. The trails have a grit base and are easily followed. The higher ground paths are wide and in generally good condition. However, as you get nearer Sand Creek, the trails get narrower and suffer from more fallen obstructions and the occasional low spot with water. Yes, mosquitoes are out even in April, but they weren't too bad yet. The trails do have some simple benches to sit on and there was a picnic table near the water's edge for anyone who wishes to sit there. Note that you are expected to clean your area since there weren't trash cans down there. There is a very modest elevation change on the trails, but they are not very challenging for folks without mobility problems. Once the pile of grit near the entrance gets redistributed and some trimming takes place to remove some obstructions along the creek trails, the park could easily be a more pleasant place to visit. It's close to home and it's trails offer an amazing workout. Bender Mountain Preserve has many trails some that go along the creek bed, with others that are much more difficult, climbing up to a 45 degree incline. Once up top there is an amazing view overlooking the Ohio River Valley and Kentucky. Bender Mountain Preserve is more hiking trails than a standard park. It's very remote and even during peak times you may only see a hand full of other hikers. Plus dog friendly!!

I've seen people taking engagement photos here, hosting weddings, and I even did my own graduation pictures here. It really is such a beautiful setting for special moments. One thing that always surprises me is how big it is. There are genuine hiking trails that wind through the woods, which is amazing for a park so close to the city. It's also great for birding, and I often see people playing frisbee, walking their dogs, or just enjoying a peaceful walk. The native plants and flowers are so well maintained, and there are so many little tucked away spots where you can sit with friends or a partner and enjoy a quiet, private moment.
