Warning - this review involves some oversharing. When my ex was in New York a few weeks ago he managed to let slip that he had been to a clinic while in town because he thought he had gonorrhea. It turns out he did. Ew. Now, while we hadn't slept together in, oh, 6 years, the hypochondriac inside me went into hyperdrive and I decided it was time for a trip to the doctor for the full STD rundown. I haven't had good luck finding a GP in the city - most leave me pretty cold. But I have a few friends who go to Dr. Champange, so I thought I'd give him a shot. He's a very cool guy, wry and smart. I told him why I was there, and he made some crack about how actors get laid a lot (it's not just because I'm an actor, honey...;)). My only complaint was that the exam didn't seem very thorough to me (but really, what do I know?). I mean, I told him I hadn't had a check-up in a few years, and I didn't see much more than a little stethoscope action. But, in the end, the fluids were taken, the tests done, and he even called me on a Saturday to tell me I am, thankfully, completely STD free (phew! - Safe sex, people! Believe it!) I used to love Dr. Champagne. His office staff left a little to be desired, yes, but I found Dr. Champagne to be knowledgable and trustworthy. No more. Here are two incidents that I experienced with Dr. Champagne which are, in my opinion, unforgivable: 1. I had several questions I wanted to ask him about my condition. I asked him two, and when I got to the third one, he told me I'd have to make a separate appointment to discuss it because he didn't have time. 2. I had to cancel an appointment last minute, and was subject to a late-cancellation fee. Fine. Several months later, I called the office to get a refill on my scrip for lexapro. I was told that I still had an outstanding late cancellation fee. So I told them I could pay it over the phone. They said no, that I had to come in. So I told them I would make an appointment to come in and pay, and get the scrip refill. They said no, I'd have to come in, pay, and make a appointment for a DIFFERENT DAY when I got there. As this was a Friday, I'd not be able to get an appointment, as per her, until over a week later. It's extremely dangerous to let a patient go without anti-depressant or anti-anxiety pills for that length of time. I wouldn't put all my private medical info out on blast like this if I didn't feel strongly about people STAYING AWAY from this doctor's office. They're unsafe. read more

I haven't had a PCP in a very, very long time because I think they're just a bunch of drug pushers who are too eager to write a script. Dr. Champagne (you gotta' love the name!) is not for the faint of heart. If you're looking for someone to hold your hand, keep moving. When you go to see him, have all your questions ready. Worst doctor I have ever been to in my life. Bruce Champagne had a terrible bed side manner and seemed slightly sadistic by trying to frighten me into thinking I had things wrong with me by coercing me into getting blood work and then when the blood work came back fine still told me that I should get more blood work done in a few months just to make sure. This year will be the first in many years that Dr. Champagne will not perform my annual. I was happy to learn he was retiring for the Florida beach life but bummed to no longer call him my GP. I appreciate his straight-forward nature and his overall guidance in my health. He helped quell any myths and ease the course of treatment over the years. I had been through quite a few physicians prior to him (MANY), and will certainly miss his care. If you're a Champagne Connoisseur, you know that the more Brut a champagne, the drier it is. Dr. Bruce Champagne is Brut: crisp, dry with just a hint of sweetness. I have been a patient of Dr. Champagne's for just over ten years. He is brilliant, direct, thorough and a bit witty. Located in Gramercy and a few blocks away from 14th Street and Union Square, it doesn't matter that I live uptown - He's worth the trip. I learned very early on that for nearly every thing I need, I would have to make an appointment and occasionally I have been able to get referrals over the phone (dermatologist, gynecologist, etc.). The receptionists are just as Brut as Champagne, if not more so. Though I suppose I like that. I prefer if people just skip the faux 'How are you?' or 'Yes, yes! Splendid weather we're having today!' and get right to the point of checking in, paying the co-pay (cash only!) and having a seat. I'm there to be seen by a doctor, have a diagnosis, perhaps receive advice and have my concerns addressed not to make friends. Good to note that you must stand by the counter and not sit in the chair by the counter because they will not check you in other wise. Through the years Dr. Champagne has proven to me time and time again that he has his own successful private practice for a reason. Whenever I have been sick or had an infection (such as an outer ear infection), he prescribes the best medicine for my situation and reminds me that he is only a call away. When I fractured my foot in two separate places, Dr. Champagne directed me to one of the best foot surgeons in Beth Israel. Instead of healing in over four months like the Emergency Room had predicted, Dr. Champagne directed me to a podiatrist that had me comfortable and crutch-less in less than four months. I have since then never had a referral from Dr. Champagne that has been less than stellar. When I have come to his office for treatment or to address health concerns, he has always been dead on about what I have. One time, he gave me awful news over the phone. He actually listened to me vent, cry and answered my questions and offered advice in return. He politely excused himself as he had to continue his work day and as he did, it became clear that we were on the phone for a little over ten minutes. Dr. Champagne took time out of his day to comfort me, pretty sure a lot of doctors do not do that. That aside, he has always been great about asking me questions while taking notes about nearly everything I say and is just as great about answering my questions. And after every appointment, depending on what time of the year I may come in, he always offers a blood test or flu shot (I told him I thought it sounded scary and my immune system is amazing and do I really need it? To which he replied, "Yes. It is. If you don't want it today, you know where I am." If you are looking for a wonderful internist who is focused, honest and direct I strongly suggest you come to Dr. Champagne. He is absolutely brilliant and certainly Finlay approved. read more

I had a semi-emergency last week where my blood glucose levels were dangerously high. I am not on meds or insulin for my type 2 diabetes, but I needed a shot that day! He squished me in on a busy Monday, gave me some very-deserved but mild grief about my diet, and sent me home with a sample insulin pen in case this ever happens again. He called me first thing the next morning with the results of my blood work and to see how I reacted to my very first insulin shot. Dr. Champagne has been my doctor going on 10 years for many reasons. 1) I can usually get an appointment when i'm sick or hurt. 2) the staff is polite, educated and alert. This is a big plus!! 3) quick response to tests!!! Good or bad he knows its on your mind and he calls you right away. 4) He has referred me to many great specialists over the years in my network. 5) He has every right to wag his finger at me for smoking but he doesn't. Went back last week for my annual checkup/ nose that wouldn't stop running, etc. Now I KNOW doctors get pissed when a patient doesn't show up in 9 months, but seriously, he made me feel prety bad. I waited an hour, even though I arrived 10 minutes early. Then I wasn't given time to tell him why I was there. Then, when I kept interjecting with my questions, he basically told me to shut up (in slightly nicer terms.) Then told me if I wanted to discuss my last issue, I would have to make another appointment. This after I saw him for about 6-8 minutes. I hate going to the docters and hadn't been in a very long time but decided it was time to man up (aka girl I was seeing strongly suggested) and get a physical. This is the first PCP I've ever had so take that in account but in terms of ease Bruce was exactly what I was looking for. I called on a Friday and received an appointment for the following Friday. The only downside was I had a bit of an extended stay in the waiting room (20 mins) but as soon as I got called back to an exam room I was in and out in 30 minutes. Dr. Champagne is the worst Doctor I've ever been to and a flat-out crook. I went to Dr. Champagne to inspect a problem I was having. In his office, I was visited by Dr. Champagne and his resident who was literally in high heels and wearing the shortest lab coat I'VE ever seen. Very professional. He asked her (the resident) about the problem as he was clueless himself. They concluded there was nothing wrong. Meanwhile I went to a clinic later and found out I did actually have a problem that was easily diagnosable. While I was at Dr. Champagnes office, he asked if I would like to do routine vaccinations and tests. I explained that I only have emergency insurance and I didn't think that was covered. The doctor LIED to me telling me that of course its covered etc. etc. Before each vaccination or test, I repeatedly asked whether I would have to pay for it and he promised me "no". Later I received a bill from his office (I had already paid a co-pay) and a huge bill from a medical lab. Having 5 minutes with Dr. Champagne and his resitdent and getting a misdiagnosis that was caught at a public health clinic cost me literally hundreds of dollars, due to this man's lies. The doctor was attentive, smart and funny. He made me feel at ease and didn't make me wait more then five minutes. He even called me midday the next day with my blood results! What a *GREAT* doctor! The waiting room is a little old and ..hm ..not "nice" but who cares. I had no trouble making an appointment, he checked my symptoms, wrote a prescription, did blood work all in a fairly quick timeframe. So, I'll try to make this brief. I'm allowed a small yearly benefit from my insurance company for preventative care every year. I thought I'd be good to myself, and for the first time in my life go to a "real" doctor for a physical, not just the free nurse practitioner at my school like I usually do. I had a physical with Dr. Champagne that lasted all of 5-7 minutes during which time he couldn't even manage a smile. Well, my yearly $200 benefit didn't cover much, and I am now left with a bill of $325.00 for my 5 minutes with Dr. Champagne. So in total, the final charge was $525.00 for an annual physical that was less thorough than my usual with the school nurse. Oh well, I learned my lesson- I know now that "real" doctors are for rich people only. read more

I wish all doctors were like Dr. Champagne! I've been his patient for 4 years now, but only went to him for annual physicals until recently. When I suddenly started losing my voice, I called his office and got an appointment 2 hours later. Dr. Champagne is an excellent diagnostician, he accurately diagnosed me with laryngitis and also found another minor issue, which was confirmed by an ENT the next day. Dr. Champagne eased my anxiety about the issue and was very reassuring, his staff made the ENT appointment for me for the following day. He has never steered me wrong when referring to a specialist. Dr. Champagne ALWAYS calls me (yes, he actually calls himself) with my test results and asks how I'm doing, which is unheard of! When I had questions about the results of a procedure done by another doctor, he called me back the next day and thoroughly answered all my questions. I've recommended him to everyone I know, which is something I don't usually do when it comes to doctors. Two minor gripes about the the office: -They don't accept credit cards, only cash or checks. Not a big deal and didn't stop me from returning there, but something to know before your visit. -I wish Dr. Champagne was on ZocDoc, would've made it so much easier to make an appointment when I could barely speak. If you're looking for a primary care doctor who will make you feel comfortable and who actually cares about his patients, try Dr. Champagne. You'll thank me later. read more

I went looking for a doctor when I moved to NYC about a year ago. I went to a few places and was not very convinced that I found a doctor, I received incomplete or indirect answers, sugarcoating diagnoses, professionals who approached their job as if I was in their office to make friends with them. I have plenty of friends, I wanted a competent, objective health care provider, whose method of caring about me was making sure he gave me honest interpretations of all of my blood work and diagnoses every time we met no matter how inconvenient the truth is for me to accept. I have found that Dr. Champagne is competent, direct, honest, and accessible. When you call his office for a referral, he himself calls you back. That means a lot to me, when someone doesn't hide behind the front desk. He also knows a lot about my health insurance, when we can do physicals and blood work and what my insurance will cover and what my responsibility would be before we decided on what we will do. He is one of the only Doctors who listens to understand, and doesn't listen with the intent to respond. If you read some of these reviews, people are complaining that he sent them for blood work or referred them to a specialist. One woman complains because she cancelled minutes before her appointment and was charged for intentionally wasting someone else's time. You deserve to be charged because you are an adult and you are supposed to be able to manage your time, and there are consequences when you display behavior that fails to live up to your commitments especially when it effects others. These are not fair ways to rate someones performance. I would encourage you to run away from the "competent" doctor that doesn't send his patients to specialists or to have blood work done. Dr. Bruce is a 5 star doctor, his job is to help you maintain your wellness and advise you when you are not well, he is your doctor, not your mother. I have officially found my new GP! Dr. Champagne is efficient and direct, I don't need my hand held for a check up. He has a very dry sense of humor that I imagine most people miss. I saw him for surgery clearance and I had to have everything tested. (As I was leaving he says, "I'll call you and let you know if you're pregnant" which I thought was hilarious.) if you get bloodwork done, you may have a second deductible. This is not disclosed by Champage or the office manager.. I did not need bloodwork and would have turned it down if I knew that I would be billed an additional 27.07 on top of the initial deductible of 20.00; thought this was shady and unethical. It comes down to policy and ethics... champagne probably does not want to disclose the POSSIBILITY of an additional deductible because many patients will turn down the additional services which would mean less revenue for his practice. Called the Lab and they agreed that it is a disclosure issue. Not happy at all. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Champagne's for a long time. I was a surgical coordinator in orthopedics at Beth Israel Medical Center for 5 years and if one of the patients did not have a primary care to do pre-surgical testing, etc., I knew that Dr. Champagne would always welcome the patient. He is somewhat "laid back" but he is a helluva doctor! He tells you like it is and you receive your test results in a timely manner! The young ladies that work with him are on top of all managed healthcare changes, Medicare rates and changes, PPO and POS rates and fees! If you are looking for a great primary care physician, give the office a call! Also, they play the best radio station in the front and never in my room when I've been there. read more

I've been looking for a pcp for awhile and I was hoping he would be the one. No such thing. He seemed a bit on a perverted side. The way he was looking , way creepy to me. He was trying to be funny but I wanted a serious doctor who would be professional. He was getting personal with his questions, and at one point, I said yes, my husband and i do love that restaurant just to stop. I visited Dr. Champagne's office Wed. 4/1 for the first time as a patient. Unfortunately, my experience was TERRIBLE. He dismissed all my concerns about an acute pain I have been suffering from for a long period of time as muscle pain as if I did not know the difference. And every other question regarding my health was also dismissed as "Aging" and he left the room as I was still asking him about a physical matter, showing no courtesy whatsoever. My visit took about 5 minutes and not to be able to ask or speak about my physical concerns left me feeling like I had wasted my time on this visit. When he called to inform me the results of my lab tests, he hung up as I was still talking to him, totally disregarding me as a patient and as a person. I feel I can get more information about myself researching on the computer than consulting with him. I was terribly disappointed and am happy that I do not have to return to see him in the near future. I definitely would NOT recommend Dr. Bruce Champagne to anyone. read more

It does not take him long to make an accurate diagnosis and prescribe appropriate treatment. Never again will I see Dr. Champagne!!! He was my primary doctor for more than 3 years, I recommended him to everyone I know including my 75 year old mother...on her first vist with him he changed her prescription blood pressure medication but i brought her back to him because of a strong palpitation, he doubled the dosage of the medication, a week later she had same concern, I called him for advice early one morning left him a message with his rude secretary, a 2nd message in the early pm, then another around 5pm..finally I was so upset that I brought my mother to his office..he dismissed us with no hesitation because we did not have an appointment, he didn't even check her blood pressure..I brought my mother immediately to the emergency room, she was admitted for 3 days for an abnormal heart beat, hight blood pressure!!! this was very alarming to my family since we had recently lost our father. First visit was pretty good, the wait time was very short. I filled out a short form and signed another then answered some questions about my health and medical history from the assistant. I saw the doctor about two minutes later(he's funny), he listened to my health concerns then gave me possible causes for being sick.
