Terrible chat experience. I'm a first time buyer and FedEx could not read the label. After several attempts, they couldn't locate me. I chatted in and they said they couldn't do anything and I was welcome to file a claim once it didn't show moving through the FedEx system. It never did so I couldn't file a claim. This review is limited to my experience at that Brownell's store in Grinnell. Specifically excluded are 2A-related political commentary. I'm also currently not a gun owner. So what was I doing here? It was partially curiosity and the fact that ammo containers and water-resistant Magpul pouches make great general storage tools. I went back with a couple of those items, and a mental note to check the online catalog at a later time. In terms of hand guns and rifles, the place of course is impressively "loaded", which for me was a lot to see, but with very little understanding of how things worked or what firearm is chosen for what. OK prices, huge marketing presence and "influencers" (major turn off TBH), large selection and "deals" pages that offers some discounts sometimes, although raising MRSP by 20% and give a 10% discount doesn't really qualify as a discount. The most troublesome part of buying from these guys is the insistence at collecting personal information, including Passport/DL picture. Giving a picture of DL is "mandatory" to purchase certain things. The BS-meter went up to 11 on this one. What could a large retailer be collecting picture ID of their customers for, and for whom? One can only imagine how well this info would be defended should a 3 letter rights stomping government organization came asking for it. I stopped in here with the intent of buying a VPO for my patrol rifle. After waiting at least 10 minutes or so at the optics counter, I asked the unhappy man carrying guns back and forth what I needed to do to get help. Rather frustrated, he started to help me, then saw "Ray" was free and asked him to help. Ray was great and helped me through my questions and helped me place an order that would be out in 10 minutes. More than 10 minutes later, the order came out, but both women working the counter were dealing with multiple things. As one told "Chad", she can only do one thing at a time. I went ahead and eased their workload and just left my order and other purchases and headed out. I ordered two ear protection headsets and a 100 round of 9mm hollow point ammo. I have called four people, chatted on line, left a negative survey and still nothing. I will be switching to Cabelas after I get this order resolved. The customer service try to connect me to customer support and they never call me back. If I wait it is one 60 minutes. I have been put in the cue several times to be ignored. I have asked for the CEO's email and have been ignored. Yelp is my last alternative. I purchased a few items from Brownells and they sent it USPS Ground Advantage. I paid the usual rate that I'm used to, around $10...I usually get it in two to three days Priority. Now that they ship Ground Advantage, Brownells pays USPS even less for shipping, I pay the same or more for shipping...and TWO WEEKS later I'm still waiting for it to arrive. These were small items, total weight of less than one pound. I checked USPS rates. Even at consumer rates (which are much higher than commercial rates) they were profiting off shipping; now it's exorbitant. This place is ran be morons! I ordered a Gun cleaning kit that came in a metal tin container. I also ordered 1000 rounds of 9mm ammo. So brain surgeon thought it would be a great idea to put both inside the same box. From Iowa to Indiana the ammo bounced around inside the box which had no padding inside crushing the tin container the cleaning kit came in. I called Brownell's 800# and spoke with a rep or put me on hold for exactly 38 minutes and then hung up. I will never order from Brownell's again! read more

They are a mixed bag. Advantages - Sometimes the prices are much better than other retailers. This is the only reason I still do business with them. Annoyances - My first time on-line I was offered a coupon for setting up an account. It comes by e-mail after they have processed your order. There is no expiration date. On my next order it did not work. So I called and was told it expired the month before they sent me the e-mail. Really? So I was offered a lesser coupon ($10 off instead of $10 off and free shipping). "No". They transferred me to another department that tells me it expired but honors it and takes the order on the phone because they cannot see my on-line cart. It then went into processing where it has sat for several days. Disadvantages - The on-line experience reminds me of 70s technology - ordered received, order in processing, ..., order in shipping, order shipped, and eventually it arrives. - Telephone help is matter of fact. You feel they are somewhere between reasonable and you are using up their time. read more

I've been trying to get my hands on a BLACKHAWK - T-Series L2C Light-Bearing Holster (Left Hand Carry) to fit a Sig M18 for a little over a year now, but every time I check their website, the holster is out of stock. So I went to Brownells and to my surprise they had it! So I ordered one from them on October 20th and received it on November 8th. As soon as the holster arrived in the mail, I tore that box open and noticed it was the wrong product. I immediately called customer service to explain to them the issue I had. I was transferred to three different people because they weren't understanding the problem I was having. I kept telling the person I spoke to over the phone, "I got the wrong product in the mail. The holster I was supposed to receive is a light-baring holster, a holster that allows me to holster my firearms (Sig M18) with a weapon light on it", and she didn't know what I was talking about, I sent her pictures of the holster I got with my firearm in it, and she was even more lost, she confused a weapon light with a red dot and then asked me if my problem was that the holster came in the wrong color, at this point I was already frustrated, but I kept my cool. After a while, they thought it would be a good idea to transfer me to what they called a "product technician." The older gentleman I spoke to had no clue on what I was talking about either. They finally came to a conclusion to have me send them the holster back to inspect it. When I heard that, I became upset because the issue wasn't that the holster was defective, it was, that you sent the wrong product. It was getting late, and they were about to close, so they told me someone from their team was going to reach out the following day, which they never did; I had to call them back. When I called back they finally gave me an answer, and it was that their website had the wrong information on it, which is odd because they have both the name of the product and the picture on there. (I will attach the screenshot I took on December 11th, 2021, which means they still haven't fixed it.) The point of all this is that their customer service team and the technician I spoke to lack the necessary knowledge of what their company is selling, which is sad. I don't think I'll be buying any major piece of equipment from Brownells anymore. I have the documents to prove it. read more

Absolutely misleading website on ammunition availability. Ordered a case and after payment the invoice shows 1 box to be shipped and the case is on backorder. Went back to the website and took screenshots showing the case was "Available" and had to take the time the next day to go through their hassle of a customer service process to cancel the entire order as they had no idea when the ammunition would be in stock, OR when they update their website. Sometimes decent prices, but it is a moving target. They do Promotions, but the 'Sale' price that it was for weeks, went up. A price changed and went higher while it was in my cart AT CHECKOUT. It had been the same price for a few weeks, but today they had a 10% off Promotion so they raised the price as I had not hit enter fast enough. So they do a promotion, but raise the price. Poor follow Through and Not Helpful Resolving I had an issue with a hard to find part on a tight timeline, the tech support was awesome, spent a lot of time with me finding the part and then getting it shipped out within 24 hours, they gave the package to FedEx which turned out to be a complete nightmare. I had double my shipping costs to receive the package within 48 hours and they took it from Ia to Tn and then left it there for 1.5 weeks. They were a complete waste of time getting it resolved so I called Brownell's again, they apologized and told me they would ship another one out right away and then request the 1st package to be returned to them and that I should have an email confirming within a couple of hours. The next day still nothing, so I called again, then made it into Claims department who was not helpful at all, she told me I could buy it again and then maybe get my 1st purchase refunded within 45 days. Then they proceeded to tell me I'm sorry we can't do that either, item is not in stock. So I found the parts I wanted and ordered them to be delivered within 48 hours. At this point I have bought items twice and not sure how to get my money back from them other than calling my card company to cancel the charges. When their economy shipping system is used they put your order in a shipping system called " Retardations" AKA innovations...lol Here's my shipping adventure from the UPS website. From Iowa to California, sits there a couple days, after couple days it gets shipped to Arizona maybe 3 or 4 days more at a local innovations warehouse and finally to Albuquerque New Mexico maybe another 2 to 3 days. This shipment started with ups , ups hands it usps which makes the final delivery. I ordered a couple items from eBay a couple days after i ordered from brownells, it was shipped from the same brownells area in Iowa. Now the ebayer used straight usps and i received my order in 3 days and yes eBay purchase came with FREE shipping. Enough on their shipping policies. In other news. Purchased a bolt carrier from brownells in November and finally opened it last month to take it to the range. Guess what extractor lip was broken. This is my first purchase with them. Sent it back for a refund, No! No freeking refund. I get a digital gift card. I figured ok I'll try them again. Used my gift card and received wrong items. Took 2 weeks to finally speak to a real person to fix it, i asked please expedite my shipment since it was your company that screwed up, NO!!!! Lost another customer here. I ordered a Magpul stock and accessories on 22 August and have yet to receive the order. Shipping (paid for) was supposed to take 5-8 business days. As I write this it's 11 Sep and no sign of the package. Repeated calls to Brownells have been met with..."that's a Fedex problem", "there is a weather delay", "Oh, you're in Hawaii, that takes a lot longer", "Not our problem once it leaves the store, we're in the midwest..." and a couple of others I cannot recall right now. BTW, Hawaii was admitted as a state back in 1959. The Postal Service covers the state and doesn't charge any extra. A review of the Fedex tracking system shows that the package has been languishing in Chino, California for over a week and will soon be handed off to a three masted frigate sailing round the horn destined for our tropical shores. For decades, Brownells has been the cornerstone of our shooting sports experience. After dozens of orders, only one wrong item: totally MY FAULT! We were totally confused about some less than stellar reviews. We are not debating their experiences, but think perhaps some of the problem might possibly be due to shipping issues? Just a guess. We would like to use our last 2 buys as examples. A: bought Ed Brown 1911 barrels, and saved appox. $50.00 each compared to. Ed Browns own website. Shipping: on time and no damage to package or contents. B: we wanted to fit Novak Lomount sights to a Caspian 1911 slide (:beautiful:) and instead of selling me a $300.00 tool, Caleb found a better solution for less than 50 bucks! Additionally, we had a $100.00 gift certificate on file for a very long time. When we needed it for purchase A...Bingo. Ordered ammunition that was in stock and should have been filled and shipped as quickly as possible. Was told it takes longer to process because of staffing. In my view staffing issues are a business problem that should not affect customer orders and needs to be addressed by the company without impacting the customer. Also, expect all orders after 1:00 PM CST, to be processed the next day. Really! Who only works until 1:00 p.m. CST?
