This is one of those quintessential "hole in the wall" places. Don't go looking for five star cuisine and there is literally NO place to sit down to eat but they have a deli counter and make some of the best food around here. My sandwich of choice is a Cajun chicken sandwich which is a hot chicken fillet on jalapeño bread with lettuce, mayo, cheese, pickles, and jalapeños. My my. A bag of chips and a fountain drink makes a meal fit for the gods! The turkey and swiss is great and of course they make many other sandwiches but all of the basic variety. You might think buying a bag of chips would be less than desirable, however just realize you have a lot more variety in what you get and they will be fresh being just opened by you! The styrofoam cups are generous and no sweating in your cup holders or on your desk. The soft drinks are heavy on the syrup so you get great flavor and the ice is the soft ice you can crunch really well. There also is a fried chicken counter where you can get fresh corn dogs (yum), chicken and potato logs. If you need the odd bar of soap, gallon of milk, or pack of chewing gum, they've got that, too! They are extremely ugly on the phone for the most part and they have hung up on me because of their impatience! I really dislike going to the pharmacy department in Minden La. Now the automotive department experience is wonderful each and every time I go there-no problem. So which store? Ralph's? Nope. Albertsons? Nada. Brookshire's is the place...that's how they do groceries south of the Mason-Dixon. It's your standard grocery store; clean, well laid-out, with a nice meat department (all butchering and grinding is free), a nice fruit and vegetable section, as well as the usual mix of national and store brands. So you won't have any problem getting that DiGiorno (not delivery) frozen pizza, Cheetos, or whatever else you've got a taste for. And like any market, they have items to appeal to the local clientele. Need fresh calfs' liver? Maybe some live crawfish? A gallon jug of sweet tea? Or the latest copy of Chewin' Tobacco and Shotguns Weekly? Okay, I made that last one up, but either way, Brookshire's will cover you. One other thing to note, especially if you're a SoCal native. Here, the employees are a little strange. They say things like "Hi!" and "Can I hep' ya find anything?" on a regular basis. And once they've rung you up and loaded your groceries in the cart, they take the groceries out to your car and load them for you, smiling the whole time. Having lived in SoCal all my life, people being that nice (without charging me for it) automatically puts me on the defensive. But it's cool - the people here are just very nice and helpful.
