I stopped by this Brookshire Brothers after an appointment in town, thinking I might find a small town gem. It has the look and feel of a small Randalls supermarket inside, just a bit more crufty. Ultimately, I was disappointed, although there were a few bright spots. The parking lot was fairly empty late on a Thursday afternoon. So was the store, which made for easy shopping. What really surprised me was that there was no small town hospitality exhibited. The employees were lifeless at their assigned stations as I passed by. Perhaps they sensed I wasn't from town, but that shouldn't be shocking, given that Wimberley itself is a Houston refugee camp. I was hoping for great things given that they advertised a bakery on the front wall of the store. Instead, what I came across were prepackaged goods. The french bread wasn't even slightly warm at 5p, which told me it was either baked early in the day or trucked in. Best of the lot are the David's Cookies, which were on special and tasty. Pass on the labeled Brookshire-branded bakery items, however. They are nothing special and mostly stale or on their last sale date. The fresh seafood and meat department looked sad. The butcher never looked up as I passed near the end of his cases. Prepackaged beef and pork items weren't moving and several seemed well on their way to green. As I wandered slowly through the store, I found a few weekly specials on house brands, but mostly items that were priced as you might expect for a small town store that's the only game in town. That may have worked years ago when the choices were Country Boy or a drive to San Marcos, but not since HEB came to town. On a positive note, they have a sizable wine department and some 20% clearance sales--mostly on Texas wines. I guess wine helps one cope here. The pharmacy stock area appears tiny and under-stocked, but I had no reason to test that. At checkout, there were only two lanes open. I went to the one where the cashier was finishing up with another customer. The cashier was pleasant enough, but not particularly friendly. She asked if I was a "Celebrate" member. I told her no, but asked if I could join other than by text. She didn't know but handed me some flyer that was about shopping online and indicated there might be a way to join the club from the corporate website (there is). I really didn't see much to Celebrate during my visit to this Brookshire Brothers store, except I came away with three plastic bags of groceries for only $26. There's just that "has been" sad sack atmosphere hovering over this store. Had there been a bit more cheer or friendliness to accompany my hopefulness, I might be back again. I guess the happy people other reviewers mentioned went to work for HEB. I can have a similarly depressing and unfriendly experience in Austin at any Randalls, so I'll keep driving past Brookshire Brothers next time. read more

If I had written this review 5 or 10 years ago I would have given them 3 stars at the most and what's so hard is that they were the only Grocery Store in town for so many years and at one time you could get good produce and a nice variety of center isle goods and then HEB came to town. My Mom was and is very loyal to Brookshire Brothers and refused to shop at HEB but they are losing her as a customer as they just don't have her favorite products any more. It's sad that the quality and variety of food have gone downhill. Don't give up but it seems like they have stopped trying. On my last visit on the Sunday before Christmas the store smelled of dead fish and you were hit with this smell as soon as you walked in the door. I try to give them business but the store is not clean and well with that odor I could not wait to get out of there. I must say the best thing about Brookshire Brothers is the Pharmacy and its staff. John Lyon the pharmacist has helped my parents manage their medications for years and we are thankful for that. I do pray that Brookshire Brothers survives! read more

Worse place I have ever shopped. Rotten produce cello wrapped. Self checkout scanning will charge you 5 times for ONE thing you purchased. And forget about getting a refund even though they rang the refund up on the same method I paid for this and other groceries. NEVER going back to that store for ANYTHING. Went to buy a few groceries yesterday and went to the registers to pay. There were four employees ( all young , male dark hair) around the register. I was carrying the groceries in my arms , I waited for them to pay attention and take my groceries. Instead all of the employees ignored me and were acting goofy and just kept chatting. As I went to set my groceries on the counter, an employee steps in front of me with a soda and tells the cashier to ring it up. And of course, they do! Then they just stood around gossiping as the line began to grow. This is just lousy, crappy, and unacceptable. I guess they don't hire people at brooks hire brothers with manners, respect or decency! I told the cashier that he needed the Items more than I did, set them on the counter and left... I figured there was no sense in arguing or calling the manager, since they were the ones who hired these rude teen-age idiots and wouldn't know any better either. Shame on this store... thank God for HEB! As We were walking out the door, the moronic cashier yelled at me, "I'm scanning your groceries Now!!" "Good for you."' I said, and kept walking out the door. What a great reflection on Wimberley, brookshire bros, and the Texas education system. Not to mention the testament to lousy parenting. When it comes to the Southern staple known as fried chicken, the Brookshire Brothers deli department has got the Colonel on the run. Ok ... so they don't have all the fancy batters like Original Recipe®, Extra Crispy®, Super Crispy®, Extra-super Crispy®, or Extra-super-duper Crispy®, but they have enough of a variety to satisfy the most discerning fried chicken addict. What they do have are two of the most basic, country-style, Wimberley, Texas standards: it's what the folks around these here parts refer to as "the spicy kind" and "the not-so-spicy kind." Sorry Bubba: you get the same golden brown, crispy fried batter at this deli counter for both varieties, 'cause their 'ain't no special orders here. Ladies and gentlemen, let me remind you to ignore the grocery store surroundings and to keep your eyes on the pressure cooker. Concentrate your attention on the quality of the chicken itself. Momma' never used Chipotle Chili Peppers in HER batter, so why do you think your wings, legs, and thighs have to be flavored by it? Where the Colonel uses genetically-engineered, antibiotic-laden hybrid chickens who spend their entire lives squashed in a little cage so they grow up fat and sassy and unable to walk, the good people at Brookshire get their chicken from more humane suppliers. At least, I think so. To be perfectly honest, I'm not exactly sure where they come from, but anywhere else has got to be better than the supply sources used by the big drive-thrus. I don't know about you, but I would prefer my fried chicken to have had SOME sort of a life before it clucks its way through my digestive tract. Mind you, I don't want my fryer to have a college education, but free-roaming would be nice. Call me old-fashioned. With that in mind, I have to say that the pieces are really BIG at Brookshire Brothers. Ample would be a good description. Chow down on two crispy, juicy breasts here with a couple of vegetables on the side and LAWD HAVE MERCY--you've got yourself a bonafide dinner. Its great for convenience when you just need a thing or two. I would prefer to keep my local small bussiness in bussiness. But they leave stuff past the sale date and keep selling it at full price. Or they mark it down on the expiration date. Who drinks a gallon of milk in one day or eats a 5 pounds of ham in one day? I understand they are trying to reduce their losses as much as possible. But I think it would be smarter to give a customer a deal then to let it expire and then sell it to a customer spoiled. Which makes better customer service? read more

I wasn't expecting to find a grocery store of this size in Wimberley. We were staying at the Canyon Sunrise cabins and since a grill was available we decided on some steak for dinner. They had a really nice selection of meats and seafood in the meat counter. We had no trouble finding really good looking steak. I had spotted the self serve salad bar at the front of the store and decided that would be a great accompaniment. The salad bar had a variety of offerings and everything looked really fresh. The selection in this store was pretty good and I found the employees to be quite friendly and helpful. I was happy to see such a variety of fresh produce as well. Our last stop in this store was the wines. One of the employees was doing a tasting so we stopped and tried a few whites and reds. The wine section was bigger than I expected and offered a great variety. We had no problems finding the right bottle to pair with our steak. I was very pleased with both the service and selection at Brookshire Brothers. Great store - nice, clean and well maintained! Prices were reasonable as well. read more

If you want to lose about 5 lbs., then eat a salad from their salad bar or their pre-made salads. The first night it was my aunt with their pre-made salad. The ones located near their deli case. Then the next night it was me, with their self-serve salad bar. The fly circling the food should have been a hint. I gave an extra star because they do have a good selection of European foods which I wasn't expecting. And, albeit small, gluten-free section. Service wasn't that great. I guess they have to know your family and where you come from in order to be friendly to you. read more

On Feb. 28th I stopped at the Jasper Tx store to pick up some provisions for a fishing trip. While I stopped at the Deli counter. While there I experienced blatant racism. As I waited for someone to fill my order I noticed another white gentleman being ignored by the employees while anyone black were promptly waited on. I will no longer shop there .I fish and hunt near there but will do my grocery shopping elsewhere. read more

well Brookshires used to be the only gam ein town..but no more. the new HEB is cleaner and nicer. Worst part was Deli, tried their regular fried chicken and tasted like someone dumped a container of ground black pepper into the oil. Can't bring myself to try again. Second worst was 'chicken pot pie', which might as well have been called 'carrot pot pie', could have taken more potato, but not anywhere the amount of carrots. read more

After a local shop tried to charge me $700 for a scanty amount of wedding flowers, I wandered into this store, and ended up saving $500 and creating fantastic memories! An amazing older local gal tugged a massive collection of catalogs out out for us and helped me find exactly what I wanted, arranged the delivery to the store, offered to help us prep the bouquets, etc. She helped me design them, too, suggesting that I'd appreciate some fronds and other filler that complemented the blooms so well. She special ordered exactly what we wanted, and we paid $100 for it all! Calm, beautiful desert and chaparral flowers. I had a second cousin who worked in the bridal industry for a bit help me wrap bouquets, fix boutonnieres, and arrange all the flowery bits. I'll never forget laughing with my bridal party as we wrapped those flowers the night before. :) My mom ended up deciding the night before that she wanted another $100 in flowers to fill the ceremony room, and found a truly insane quantity in the same flower department at Brookshire's! I wish I could post my wedding portraits here. The store is a bit small for my spoiled Austinite self, but the staff has so much TLC and a handy attitude. :) read more

Wow, how this place has changed over the years- for the better...I like this place- local friendly faces greet you around every corner. The flower dept. ladies were really kind and gave my cute lil' 19 month old daughter a rose (sans thorns- i guess not EVERY rose has its thorn Poison) which she subsequently destroyed in the car...I guess I have a special place for this grocery store in my heart- and it's really nice to see they have stepped up with the times- ORGANIC??? Gone are the days of the baffling Wimberley "we're a dry city but not really if you just carry around this little paper card to all the restaurants" booze system. I stopped into Brookshire Bros for the first time in a while, and I was absolutely blown away by their new wine section. If you can ferment it, they will sell it. They had wines from sources as varied as local Texas wineries to wineries in Spain and South Africa. They even have an organic wine section. Their groceries are still more expensive than what you'd have to pay for the same product in San Marcos, but the only place in SM that could rival BB's for their wine selection now is Gabriel's Liquor Outlet. Good job, Wimberley! You finally have a place to buy decent vino! read more

I'm puzzled by the reviewers who say this store is more expensive. I'm not sure they actually have compared prices with the other store in town, who always says "Compare our prices with anyone". When I compare prices, Brookshire Brothers always comes out the better buy, barring, of course, the occasional loss leaders in the ads. I have to admit I don't compare the prices of EVERY item in both stores, because I don't buy many convenience foods and generally buy fresh produce rather than canned or frozen. I can see where a store with a stranglehold distribution could out-compete on the quantity discounts, but for goodness sakes, it's generally only a few pennies! I like my food fresh, and I like to cook, and when I want something that's already prepared I like to go to the deli for something that tastes like they just made it . . .because they did. This is an amazing store for such a small community, and we're very fortunate to have it, to keep the other one from jacking up the prices like it did when they moved into Dripping Springs and the locally-owned store closed. read more

So I gave Brookshire's three stars as it is the only grouch store around for many MANY miles. So, they have a large selection of deli style salads and ala carte items for those not looking to cook. Which is great, but they assume you have salad dressing or if you buy a large bottle of dressing, you have someplace to store it! And I don't. So I ate a dry salad. The drink selection was lacking and the coolers they use must be set on the lowest settings as the drinks I bought were pretty warm, and I pulled them from the back of the cooler. The store is kind of crazy in its design. Very scattered and nothing really organized like in other stores. So I had to ask for help like 4 times. The employees were helpful which is great, but sometimes they didn't want to stop with their simple banter that you have to wait a bit. So you pretty much have no choice on where to go in town, or if you want groceries. So hopefully you know where you are going in this store. read more

Prices are really high they can't compete with Walmart or HEB even on store brand items they get beat by a good amount ex 12 pack of budlight is 9.98 at HEB regular price at gaslight it's 12.99 on sale you do the math now the deli is nice I love the food but your prices are way to high if can't compete sell out to someone who can read more

The pharmacy is amazing. There is a gentleman named John who works in the pharmacy who is extremely helpful. He will go out of his way to help you and he truly cares about the customer. I needed advice on some medication a doctor perscribed to me and he knew all about it and was very helpful. He took time to make sure I understood about the medication. Gotta say, the folks at Brookshire really improved the store. They rebuilt the whole place. The aisles are wider and the entrance is no longer a series of "oh, sorry, excuse me". The way they organized the aisles may take some getting used to, (I enjoyed the fact that you can find pesticides in the pet care aisle). They fixed so many bad points of the store but they still have a killer deli (oh the chicken), the best bakery in 50 miles... and that guy who does the store announcements, he's that nice even in person. If they could just ditch those remaining Nazis at the checkout, I'd shop there weekly. A HUGE improvement, nice store these days. read more

I'm not sure why people think the staff are unfriendly here, I've been in about 10 times now, and I don't know any of the staff personally, yet they are always friendly and more than willing to help me find something, and they always say hi if they walk by you and catch your eye. The selection of food is good, it's the only place I have been able to find passion fruits - not that they seem to be stocked very often though! The selection of foods is more than adequate. The only issue I had once was trying to order fish from the counter, the guy took an incredibly long time to find a 1lb piece of fish and remove the skin, I must have been waiting for about 7minutes. I'm going to assume he was just new though. There's a great selection of local candles at the front, and a decent size floral and bakery section. I go here over HEB in San Marcos to avoid the crowds. This grocery, whilst the selection of alcohol is not so mediocre anymore, has some wretchedly bad prices and a questionably sourced selection of foods. The prices are insanely high, so high that I would bet you could go to the HEB in San Marcos to buy groceries regularly and you would spend less even if you accounted for gas prices. On various occasions where I have had to patronize this... (all too totalitarian) establishment, I have been assaulted by politically motivated content (especially on religious holidays) played over the store's "Music Network" -- when I shop, I certainly do not want to be paying to here how much god loves one political candidate as opposed to the other. The food selection caters mostly to tourists, and people that are interested in mainstream products. The meat selection is OK, so far as neiman ranch and honeysuckle products, but after that, you're left to wander about where other products come from. The lunch counter is OK, if you prefer fried foods or anything that you would expect to find at a luby's. I will say though, that the cheese selection is quite extensive, as well as the wine. TL;DR: * Store engages in politics openly. To customers. * Lunch counter is mediocre in terms of decent food. * Cheese selection is OK * Wine Selection is OK * Prices are seriously inflated * Tourist-oriented. read more
