I cannot recommend Kevin and his team highly enough. First of all, Kevin waited patiently, did several walkthroughs, and talked in detail with me many times over--for free--as I hemmed and hawed for two years before finally deciding to invest the money. My problem was terrible, relentless impact noise from the unit upstairs. Hundred-year-old building, wood-beam construction, no insulation or anything at all between ceiling and floor above. My only regret is that I did not do the job sooner. Kevin's price was more than reasonable, and he did a great job managing expectations (as in, the result is not going to be total silence). He worked patiently and expertly with my Manhattan co-op board and managing agent--no small feat. The job was finished on time, within budget, and for weeks after, I kept finding all these extras that Kevin's team had done for free: covering all my electrical outlets, for example, which had long been naked. I have never left a bad review on Yelp before, but this situation deserves a response. A representative of Brooklyn Insulation & Soundproofing came to my apartment for a consultation. We discussed a potential project in-person and through several follow-up emails, and eventually I was provided with a written quote and asked for my availability to schedule measurements for the project. I responded by proposing a few days that would work for me. No response. I then sent several email responses over the next few weeks to follow up on scheduling the measurements. Still no response. Finally I sent an email explaining that if I didn't receive a reply then I would have to assume that they were unable to handle the project. (shock, no response). I was completely calm and polite through all of these email exchanges, but now I'm admittedly pissed off. I feel extremely frustrated that I now have to start this entire process over from scratch with a different contractor. Their work is life changing. I bought a condo in Brooklyn early this year and I was not able to sleep in my bedroom due to humming ventilation noise coming from a building next door. I called BI&S. Kevin came out to take a look and suggested that I do soundproofing walls & install second set of windows from citiquiet. There was a bit of waiting after scheduling the project, but once the project started Navin & his team worked quickly. They are real professionals. They'll try their best to work around your schedule and make sure you are happy with the result. BI&S guys came by multiple times to ensure high quality fit and finish. I used to be able to hear the vibration and low frequency noise through the wall. After the new walls went up, nothing. Most of high frequency noise came through the window & that was taken care of by citiquiet windows. Its unbelievable how much noise reduction you get. I was a bit worried at the beginning because as a client, you are investing a lot of money upfront and it's not clear if it'll solve your noise problems. Our experience with Kevin and Navin (foreman) and his team has been EXCELLENT. We moved into a brownstone building where we could hear everything that was happening in the upstairs apartment. Phone calls, music, regular-volume conversations, foot steps, dropped coins -- every noise came resonating into our apartment like a drum. Since I work from home often, it was really difficult to have this intrusive noise. The estimate we received for soundproofing the entire ceiling of our parlor floor was high -- but after having contacted other competitors (there are only a handful who do this kind of decoupling soundproofing) who did not respond to my calls to schedule an estimate, we decided to go for it. Navin and his team were extremely professional, respectful of our space and time, honest, and thorough. They cleaned after themselves everyday and sent photos of their progress when we weren't around. They worked hard to complete the project ahead of schedule and left the space very clean. My wife and I renovated a brownstone a few years back and paid the GC at the time to "soundproof" it for a specialty insulation and sheetrock upcharge. We only have plank flooring and no subfloor so it is by default noisy and I thought this work would solve the problem. Nope. The result was very disappointing. We could hear loud voices and tons of footfall and items dropping above us. We could name that tune if someone played music. Spent three years annoyed and called Kevin when we had a window of time to consider redoing the work. I was really on the fence about spending the money to re-soundproof as I wasn't sure it would be worth it, but went for it. I can say the result is great and is night and day compared to the old job. I was a tiny bit worried about the negative reviews, which to be fair aren't about the quality of work but just communications, but I had an exceptional experience end to end with Kevin's team and would enthusiastically recommend them to anyone I know. I had a lot of qualms about whether it was worth the cost of the project or not - which, by the way, is very fair; fair is just not cheap - but decided to pull the trigger and any concerns I have are gone. The quality of the work and how the contracting team set up, prepped, operated, cleaned, etc was all super professional and friendly, and my condo is a lot more comfortable. My job was a typical new construction 1 bedroom 600 sq foot condo where the builders cheaped out and didn't insulate anything, so I had a heat sink. This meant we had to put insulation in both the ceiling and all my exterior walls, which made me anxious about how things would look after the job as well as how painful it would be. I'm used to only interacting with terrible contractors who do lazy jobs and can often be unpleasant to work with and had some PTSD from it, so seeing the team in action was just a stark contrast. I'm not sure what paying more gets you compared to what Kevin's team can deliver, to be honest. They were very thoughtful about protecting the floors and all my furniture, appliances, etc, while still giving me room to be there since i'm working from home; when they left they did a very thorough clean and nothing was damaged at all in the entire process which required moving a lot of furniture around. Lastly - the team was really friendly and when I was curious they explained what they were doing. Also, when they noticed some additional opportunities for insulation not originally in the project scope, they nonetheless did them while they were there, which was really appreciated. I also chose to have the team do patch and paint and it was flawless, and convenient since they were already there. Ultimately, from a pure cost perspective, it'll take a long time to 'recoup', but more importantly to me, the consistent comfort improvement for the 4 cold winter months of the year is well worth the cost, even if I sell this place in a few years. tl;dr - had qualms about whether it was worth it; qualms squashed. In short: they were thoroughly professional, and the results were good. Strongly recommended. It wasn't cheap, but you get what you pay for. We went from the "hear everything" situation described in other reviews to hearing only loud stomping, and pretty much nothing else. Kevin was responsive and clear in the bidding and scheduling process, and Navin and his team did the work effectively and quickly. It's impressive radical surgery: they remove the ceiling entirely and then replace it as if nothing happened. An additional thing that was much appreciated is we left and found the rooms unchanged. I had this company re-insulate two rooms in my home. I was not at home when they did the work, and my home was very clean when I returned. That said, it is no warmer now than it was before. They do NOT guarantee their work. If you hire this company, make sure they explain in fine detail what they are doing. There is a ton of cold air coming through the window molding - and they do not respond to inquiries about whether they insulated near or around the window (customer service? NOT!). Additionally, be advised that when they do the work, they cut huge holes in the walls... totally understandable... but to fix their work cost me another $1000 (to neatly close up the holes) on top of what I paid them. Do yourself a favor and hire a regular contractor to do insulation, and not count on a shabby job like this. EDITED TO ADD: BIS is telling me that window molding was not part of the project, even though I specifically showed them the drafts coming through. This is NOT the windows, its the molding around it. How can they not have either addressed it or pointed out that they would ignore this part of the wall? Their rep, who is no longer with the company, looked bored thru the whole project (texting on his phone). They are taking zero responsibility. Also, Citiquiet windows were installed AFTER the installation to make sure there were no drafts coming through the windows, but the manager who is responding to me now is still blaming the windows. They soundproofed my studio. Yes, it was expensive but they provided me with the least expensive quote of every soundproofing firm I contacted. They did a great job and were responsive and politely and quickly accommodated lots of little weird requests. There were really no problems. I'm renovating a house right now and the contractors there are a total nightmare. And they cost just as much! If you can afford it I would recommend this service. The people below who have given lower ratings are objecting to the quote, not the service. Living in NYC is expensive. Hiring people to do stuff in NYC is expensive. That's life sadly. But I've spent a lot of time working with contractors and builders lately and Brooklyn Soundproofing did a very good job, I'd say, and the quality of their workmanship was impeccable. I highly recommend Brooklyn Insulation and Soundproofing team. I needed to sound insulate my ceilings in three rooms of my apartment (ca. 450 sq. feet). I planned to do the job in October 2021 but because of unforeseeable construction work in my building I had to postpone my project a few times. Kevin (the owner) was very understanding and accommodating. My main problem in the apartment was heavy foot fall coming from upstairs neighbors. I had to insulate and decouple my ceilings in order to reduce the noise. Navim (foreman) and his crew were fantastic. Navim was in touch with me every day to inform me about the progress. He also sent me pictures of various stages of the work. They were fast and finished the job in two weeks. I expected a lot of dust from that kind of work, but the crew managed the dust very well. Hands down the best experience ever on a project at our house. Devin and his crew came to our house to surgically remove 6 walls and install soundproofed decoupled walls. We had been doing construction forever, so I was worried about how they would do this work since our house was back in normal shape. Devin and his team were so meticulous about their work and making sure that the house was protected, that I could not thank them enough. As for the price, I received 3 quotes for this work and they were most affordable. Also, the other 3 quotes asked that we vacate the house for 2-3 weeks. Devin did all of the work in 4 days. *Consummate Professionals* I bought a new condo in May of this year and it was my dream place. After a few days I realized my neighbors had two young boys who like all children play and run around the apartment after each other. My job is stressful as it is, so when I come home I like my place to be my sanctuary. Not the case here. Decided to go upstairs and introduce myself to the neighbors and told them to please keep the running to a minimum. They were very nice and the running did stop for a while, but you still even heard just the entire family walking around. After doing some research online I decided to soundproof the ceiling from the footfall. Received a lot of quotes and the first few quotes I received were double the cost that BIS gave me. Finally, I made an appointment for Kevin to come and give me a quote. He was punctual, took pics and left. Said he'll send me an official written quote. Within 2 days I got the quote. The quote was the lowest out of all of the competitors. Decided to proceed with Kevin and his team. They said they would be here at 9:00AM and even showed up a bit earlier (great for me because I had to go to work). They told me exactly what was going to be done and gave a timeline of 3 weeks. I was not living in the apartment while the work was being done. I came to the apartment every day after work to see how the work was coming along. Day 1 was prep and let me tell you they take a full day for prep. Tearing down a ceiling, you would expect dust everywhere, this was not the case. They kept the dust to a minimum. These are the best contractors we've hired to date. I'm having a hard time writing something that's not just a word salad of enthusiasm here, especially given our previous experiences with contractors -- this was close to the ideal of what working with a contractor should be like, and if you've hired a contractor before, you understand how big a deal that is. We soundproofed the ceiling of our apartment this summer to reduce noise from our upstairs neighbor; we could hear his footfalls, music, and sometimes even conversation. We got an estimate from Kevin & Colin for a decoupled ceiling, along with some insulation work where it had been cold this past winter. We also told them we wanted to check on the plumbing and electrical while we had the ceiling open, and they were happy to coordinate with the guys we hired. They were professional and friendly, listened to what we had to say and responded to it, and made adjustments to the contract to include details that we thought were important. Once the work began, their crew showed up promptly at 9am each morning, were careful to cover our floors completely to prevent dust and damage, and even helped us move the last pieces of furniture out. They showed attention to detail and kept us in the loop as they uncovered surprises in our old building, accommodating changes as we went, and in the rare case that some part of their work was not as we expected, they were quick to make changes. Our apartment is now much quieter. We can occasionally hear our upstairs neighbor a bit, in a far off, muffled way -- not the "walking on a drum" sound we used to hear all the time. Extremely Impressed: We bought a new condo in Brooklyn that was a double duplex. We had significant impact noise through no fault of the upstairs neighbor, rather, the construction of the ceiling between the units was not properly done to ensure soundproofing. The result was that we heard every footstep every time, and it was so significant as to prevent us from sleeping. We were very upset because the rest of the condo is nice, its just that we hear the neighbors constantly. This is when we started researching options. We looked at hiring a contractor to redo the ceiling but we wanted to make sure it was done right; we didn't want to make major changes unless we would be confident it would work. So we contacted Devin's team and he came out to look at the situation and give us an estimate. He is a cool guy, very nice, listened to our needs and was professional. He offered two options for us and suggested that the less expensive option would be adequate for our needs. I appreciated that he did not try to 'upsell' us on the job. He said that he could do the bedroom and hallway ceiling at the same time so we agreed. We were able to coordinate the work with our vacation, despite my making several mistakes in initially scheduling, they were able to accommodate my errors without issue. When the work was done they literally left no trace. We had no clue that any work had actually been done! The results were amazing. I was hoping for 50-75% reduction in the impact noise, that would have been enough. But our expectations are exceeded, I would put the figure at 90%+, we can only notice the footfall noise if we are actually trying to sit there in silence and hear it! Now we can sleep in peace without the constant stomping of the people upstairs. I'm sure a lot of people have the problem that we do. I would suggest doing the job once and doing it right. This was a job decoupling the ceiling to reduce impact noise (footfalls, etc). I did research and got an estimate back in 2013 to soundproof my ceiling from neighbors whose kids were particularly noisy. I didn't go ahead thinking we'd get used to the sound. It only got worse and the neighbors were both unwilling and incapable of controlling the noise. So we decided to go ahead with it. So glad we did. The difference is remarkable. The science behind decoupling the ceiling from the joist is established. Still, I wondered if the difference would be worth the money. It was.Its like our neighbors moved a floor up. We can still hear them....but barely. About the contractor - These guys are consummate professionals. Devin, the owner, is involved throughout. He is very responsive and accommodating to requests. We changed the start time on him twice by 15 minutes and the team was cool with it. The rest of the team, led by Navin, are great human beings. They work fast and get along with each other. Devin tends to give a conservative estimate and finishes ahead of time. He gave us a 10 day schedule and completed everything in 8. Came back on day 9 for some residual clean up. We lived in the apartment during the process and though not convenient, it wasn't unpleasant either. Dust management is the biggest issue. They do a great job minimizing dust but it tends to remain here and there. I wish all contractors were as good as these guys and all work as satisfying as theirs read more

I've also had 3 direct messages from other users (Ro F., Paul M., Kenneth M.) who wrote me and told me they had the SAME EXACT experience with BI&S. I needed soundproofing in my apartment because the tenants upstairs have very heavy footfalls. I contacted Brooklyn Insulation & Soundproofing and Kevin came and assessed the situation. I indicated what I wanted and he said it would not be a problem. Kevin estimated it would take three full weeks to get the job done. However, the job was completed within two weeks. The crew consisting of Navin, the two Anthonys and Roger, were outstanding!!! They were courteous and very professional throughout the project. When the ceiling soundproofing job was completed, the apartment looked like nothing had been done because they installed the soundproofing and crown molding to its original state. I highly recommend going to BI&S for your soundproofing related work. I was very satisfied and impressed by their professionalism and responsiveness at every step of the process. I'll go through the overall process and the results. My situation: basically I wanted to treat the footfall noise we were hearing. Our upstairs neighbors have a couple of kids that often run around / play in their apartment and hearing the footsteps was driving me crazy. Generally speaking we could hear the movements of our neighbors a lot, which didn't really make me feel at home. I contacted BI&S (Kevin was my main contact) and after a quick visit they gave me a quote for a decoupled ceiling solution, which was in line with the rough estimate I had before the visit. It's expensive but it was at least 25% cheaper than a quote I received from another company specialized in soundproofing. So first, the process. I was very impressed with Kevin's professionalism and availability along the way. We stayed in touch the whole time and he was very responsive every time I reached out to him. They made sure that the final result was what I expected. By the way I also wanted to remove a wall and they were happy to do it at the same time. The repainting and finishing work was thorough. Considering how extensive and dusty this kind of work is, they really made a good job at prepping the place, covering and sealing everything. We still had dust after the work (closets, windows, blinds) but at this point I think it's inevitable and you will need to clean up everything regardless of how good the prepping was. Then the results. Be aware that sensitivity to noise is very relative, so your perception might be different from somebody else's. You have to know that you will very likely not eliminate all the noises that annoy you. In my case I would say that the footfall noise has been reduced by 50%-75%, with my perception going from "annoying - very annoying" to "audible but not annoying - a bit annoying". And the noise definitely sounds more distant and muffled. I am satisfied with the noise reduction but I must admit that I was expecting to get a bit more. I guess there's only so much you can do when soundproofing a ceiling. Also it might get better after a while as the green glue supposedly takes 30+ days to reach peak performance (I'm not sure if it's really supposed to help with the impact noise though). Based on other reviews, perhaps the quality of this firm's work is solid, but my experience just trying to schedule an in-home price quote for $250 has been terrible. I've put in 4-5 calls in the last couple of months and no one has bothered to return my calls, even though last time, I spoke to someone who said that another person would reach out to me to put something on the calendar. If the customer service is this bad at the point of sale, I don't have high hopes for later in the process. read more

This was a job where they soundproofed a small studio space in our offices because we were getting sounds coming through our walls and vents from the neighboring offices. We had met with many other soundproofing agencies to inspect our situation, and Brooklyn Insulation & Soundproofing were our top pick. They showcased their knowledge while being flexible to our needs. They even offered multiple packages and solutions to solve for the room's issues based on our price range. Not only that, they offered the best price for the amount of work we needed. It was basically a no-brainer for us to move forward with them. Leading up to and during the project their team members were all personable, but also responsive, informative, and professional. They were willing to come in over the weekend to start the initial heavier demolition work as to not disturb our neighboring offices or fellow employees. They started early every day before our staff came in to minimize the sound throughout the day. They were very respectful of our space, being sure to clean up after themselves and kept us updated on their progress. Much to our surprise, they completed the entire job a day earlier than originally expected. As for the completed job, we are extremely satisfied. An actor we've worked with for over 4 years was the first to break-in the newly soundproofed studio space and he said there was "100% of a difference". Along with the soundproofing, they did a great job with the new ceiling, incorporating the existing vents and sprinklers seamlessly while improving the lighting fixture arrangement. To be frank, soundproofing projects are not cheap and require a budget for it. But it worths every dollar if you can't sleep because of the noise. I moved into a co-op, only discovered the ceiling is very thin and I can hear every step of the tenant in upstair. It wakes me up in the middle of night. After enforcing the carpet rule of the co-op, we still can't sleep. Communication with the tenant upstairs doesn't work at all, people just do whatever they want to. So I contacted BIS for soundproofing my ceilings. The online query didn't work, I called twice and made an appointment for onsite quote. There was an onsite fee of $250, which will be credit back if the project proceed. The minimum price is $12000, for larger area the price is around $45-60 /SF. When the project goes on, Kevin, the owner, is quick and responsive with all the paper work. He is also accommodating when I propose to divide the project into two parts: my bedroom and the rest. I get several days to sleep in the bedroom to decide if I want to continue the second part. The job they done is pretty good, isolate the work area so we can still live in the apartment. Whenever I have concern or some queries, they tried their best to solve the problem. In the end I did both parts of the project. The soundproofed ceiling greatly reduces the noise, most of the time you don't hear anything. When upstairs drop something on the floor I can still hear it, but much less than before. To be realistic, it won't remove all the noises. It will be like living in a concrete building, you can hear something when upstairs go crazy, but won't bother you in normal case. After the project, I found some minor scratch in the wall of my hallway, Navin, the foreman, came in the next day and repainted the wall. Really great crews. read more

These guys are phenomenal - I can't believe there are not a ton of rave reviews here for this company, and to be honest I almost didn't hire them for lack of existing feedback, so I'm happy to be able to help get the ball rolling for them. Here's my scenario: the hardwood floors of the apartment above were transmitting the footsteps of my neighbors directly downward in an alarming way, such that you could literally tell at any moment what the neighbors were doing, where they were in the apartment, etc. Given that there was coming and going at all hours, it was driving us below crazy as you could never just fall asleep at night for fear of being woken up at any moment by loud and impactful thumping from above. Although they were sympathetic, the neighbors would not put down carpeting for a variety of reasons (allergies, animals, cost, etc). Our only recourse was to try to soundproof our ceiling. That's the point at which we hired Brooklyn Insulation and Soundproofing. I'll split this review into two parts, the process and the results. As you can probably imagine from my intro, we were really impressed with this company - here's why: to start with, the owner, Devin, made two site visits to see the situation and discuss options, once to generate a quote (or rather a couple of quotes, for different approaches to the problem), and once after we had decided on a strategy but still had a bunch of new questions that had come up. Soundproofing is a tricky science, and Devin made every effort to explain how things worked, at an understandable technical level. I had done a fair amount of research on my own and I really felt like he knew his stuff. Since the way we were going to address the problem was to remove the existing ceiling and put up a new one suspended independently from little rubber 'clips' - a method known as decoupling - we wanted to make sure our apartment would be properly protected during all the upheaval, and Devin not only understood our concerns but did a GREAT job of protecting everything. Anything that we asked to have special attention, got even more layers of cover! The work took about a week, with the first day being just about protecting and taping up every exposed part of the space. They put thick paper and masonite on all the floors and counters, and taped up doors and other openings with plastic film. Our apartment looked like an armored personnel carrier. Then the ceiling came down and the heavy work started. Throughout the process, both Devin and his foreman, Robert, were always available to answer questions and discuss their actions. They even encouraged us to check up on them and look over their shoulders as much as we wanted (something most craftspeople loathe!). They also proposed things we hadn't thought about, like taking advantage of the ceiling being gone to run extra speaker and power cables. The foreman even installed an extra outlet and sconce for us in a far corner of the apartment that had previously been difficult to light. Things stayed on schedule, despite some complications during the work that required a last-minute change in how the new ceiling was to be hung. The repainting and finishing work was also completely professional and thorough. They made special trips to the paint store to match our original wall colors and their plaster guy did an amazing job of creating a smooth finish over a very large space, despite doing most of his work from atop a high scaffold. No problems here. Their load-out was swift and efficient as well (even with 6 flights of stairs to deal with!). The foreman had been sending things out as they finished with them all throughout the week, and they got everything carried out on the last day in record time. Unfortunately, there was a lot of plaster dust coating everything they removed, and while they mopped down the space afterward, there was still quite a bit of plaster dust around and we ended up spending a half day cleaning everything ourselves until the apartment was back to what we considered 'normal'. It would be great if they had assigned someone to a more thorough cleaning detail at the end of the process so this could have been avoided. OK, so was it worth it? definitely, but that answer may be different for everyone as this kind of major renovation is expensive and the results may not be what you hope for. First off, be aware that you will probably not eliminate all the sounds that are annoying you; but for us they were certainly much reduced, and what matters most, they are no longer loud enough to wake us up at night. Suspending the ceiling eliminated the 'spatialization' of sound that was such a big part of the problem for me personally - the fact that I could hear the neighbors clearly walk around from place to place. Verdict: if you want to go ahead with soundproofing, you simply can't do better than with these guys. read more

Exceptional work, great customer service and very competitive prices - not your typical contractor/home repair experience! I was looking for an insulation company that worked exclusively with green materials (cellulose), and could also handle a soundproofing job. Brooklyn Insulation totally fit the bill. My apartment was super noisy and drafty even with every double paned window closed. A few companies came over for quotes, and I got the usual Joe the Contractor vibe - talking to me like I didn't know what I needed, or trying to oversell me, big time. Brooklyn Insulation gave me some great price saving suggestions, started and finished on time, and left my apt very clean. Green is the way to go, but even if saving the environment and your health is not a major concern, these guys are Highly Recommended! read more

My wife and I hired Brooklyn Insulation & Soundproofing to help solve a horrible problem with noise coming into our apartment through a shared wall with our neighbors. BI&S worked with us to not only solve the noise issues, but also worked within our schedule. They promised to be in and out in a week - and they actually delivered! Michael & his team showed up as promised on Monday morning and were out by Friday afternoon. BI&S left the apartment admirably clean, too... it's hard to tell that they were even here. We're really happy thus far - the finished wall looks great and it's already very noticeably quieter in the apartment. It's such a big improvement for our quality of life - and if you didn't know what the room looked like beforehand, you'd never know anything had been done. This was a wonderful departure from our previous experiences with contractors. I had reservations initially about whether it was worth it to embark on this soundproofing project - but now, I am simply glad we did it. read more
