Love the cats and most of the staff was friendly, but they seemed a bit inexperienced with the animals they are supposed to be handling. When asked why a particular cat was making a certain noise, the answer we got was, verbatim, that they "were not sure". The cats also seemed stressed and largely antisocial. Maybe it was because they'd been quite busy that day, but they were disinterested in treats and toys. Some of the children were also chasing the cats around and trying to play with them but were really just flicking the toys into the cat's face or body. This isn't their fault because they are kids, but staff basically turned a blind eye to this and never intervened or tried to teach the kids alternatives to interact with the cats. The front desk lady had horrible manner -- upon mistakenly labelling me for an hour's stay (and warning me to leave on time as otherwise they will charge an extra $12), I adhered to my sticker time and then was surprised at being told that we actually needed to pay double what we originally expected. I had explicitly asked for a half hour slot for $12, and upon getting the group time label I had asked again if it WAS $12 an hr to which they said yes and ushered us in. Being surprised, we stated that we had simply been following the time given to us, and asked why we had been slotted for an incorrect duration. The front desk lady then spat out in a stressed/frustrated manner that this was a charity, so....? We are okay with supporting local animal shelters but this hostile, guilt-tripping explosion was unprofessional, especially when the confusion was due to her inattentive mistake. We paid a total of near $70. Only after that did she change her tone (maybe worried about her alienating us) and asking whether we were interested in adopting (yes, but NOT FROM THEM ANYMORE). It is clear that they are overworked and overstimulated the moment you walk in...they either run away from you or hiss and try to scratch you (doesn't matter whether you're staff or a customer...unless you have food to feed them). Cats aren't toys. Just gotta make that clear, first and foremost. That said, I absolutely adored my first time here. The "front desk" lady was super sweet and inviting. She helped guide the sign-in process and even gave a mini tour at the beginning. (And gave me and my boyfriend an extra 10 minutes to spend time with the cats.) I love the fact they're able to roam free. For anyone who enjoys spending time with felines, this is the place for you. Cats are free to go and come as they please and for the most part, they were all very friendly. Some were skittish, which is completely understandable and fine. No need to aggressively or incessantly approach cats who clearly need space. Respect that. Interesting concept but not what the name suggests. The space itself is very small and very crowded. To visit the cats you need to fill out a waiver before you can enter. There is a fee to enter which is fine because it goes to the cats care. As far as the name goes it's not really a cafe where you can enjoy a bite while you play with your new furry friends. I have no idea how I've missed this place having been walking around the area so many times! It's only when my friend mentioned the cafe I've decided to surprise my husband with a visit to this charming place. I'm not the biggest fan of cats but my husband is therefore I wanted to make him happy. You'd have to sign a waiver before entering that you understand the nature of cats who can scratch etc. You'll then be given a sticker with an entry time on it as they charge $9 for 30 min per person. That definitely gives you enough time to mingle with the cats. The space is bigger than I expected with plenty of room for the cats to enjoy themselves. You can purchase snacks for the fluffy creatures or just simply play with them. Some are very friendly and others less trusting but if you're into cats you'll love the experience. You may even get tempted to adopt a cat! Shortly after we left I discovered that my eyes started watering in a tremendous way... not because I was sad to leave the cats behind but perhaps I've developed a slight allergic reaction. This was overall a really great learning experience if you're interested in getting a cat and have never owned one before. Something I was definitely interested in doing. After coming here I've officially changed my mind. I love the idea of sign a waiver, pay $7 for 30 minutes, play with cats. However, do not speak to everyone through a door and make them sign Paperwork in a littler doorway that essentially fits two people. Making 5 to 6 people stand in that doorway is a little ridiculous. Upon entering you were given a sticker with your time that you arrived and you're free to wander with the cats. There are couches set up all over the cafe and a bay window by the front of the store. The cats are laying wherever they want to lay which is awesome because it gives you the opportunity to interact with all of them equally. Some of the cats were in a bit of a mood, no surprise there, but I believe that it was the worker's job to warn new people coming in not to interact with any cats not interested in human affection. Instead, people were either scratched, hissed at, or swatted away. For me, I've learned that cats are way too unpredictable and I'm okay with spunky, predictable pups. This place is bizarre. I never heard of paying a fee to just go and watch cats hang out all day. They could have done a bit better with the cat litter smell which wasn't awful but it was there. The Brooklyn Cat Café is just a few blocks from my apartment, and at just $5 per half hour, I think I've found my new hangout. They have so many amazing, cute and friendly cats of all ages, including kittens. And they are all adoptable! I made a reservation online, though they also accept walk-ins. Before you can enter the cat café you have to sign a waiver. My only issue was that they didn't seem to really cap the number of people at a given time, and it was incredibly crowded for the first ten minutes that I was there. There were plenty of cats to go around, but it was really difficult to navigate the narrow space. I pretty much fell in love with two cats, one who jumped right up on my shoulder and nested there for a bit, and another who had the most beautiful mixed black, white and orange coloring. I'm not really sure how to rate this experience, other than to say that our expectations (based on what we've heard and images we've seen of the place on the lower east side and cat cafes in Japan) were out of sync with the reality of this place. First thing you need to know: this is not a cafe in any way. It's a cat adoption center with a lot of cats, some of them very stressed, a rat and two turtles, a lot of volunteers rushing about and standing around, and visitors in varying states of joy, confusion, and uncertainty. My partner and I are dedicated cat lovers. We live with two cats and a rabbit. We thought we were going on a date where we'd have coffee, gaze upon cute cats, and contribute a little cash to an adoption effort. We made reservations in advance and perhaps if we had read the website more closely we would have been able to see that it isn't actually a cafe; but, you know, the name kinda implies... What we experienced was a lot of cats being cats (some relaxed, some anxious, some biting and scratching, some with stitches, some with glassy/watery eyes, some eager to interact with people, some avoidant, one hiding in the bathroom while other cats waited outside, one relaxing on a ceiling beam...), an array of furniture along the walls, a few other people standing around looking confused, a lot of volunteers who seemed reluctant to interact with us (I was standing outside the screen door for a while before anyone came over to help me, despite the fact that my partner had checked in to our reservation under my name and was standing there waiting for me to enter), and no one scooping the litter (which, along with the huge plates of cat food being put out, was quite odiferous). There was a mountain of chewy.com boxes and garbage bags outside the entrance when we arrived. If you're looking to adopt a cat, this might be a good place for you to go (although there did seem to be several people trying to adopt and they did not appear to receive much attention from volunteers either and I can't speak to the adoption process here at all); but I wouldn't recommend this as a place to spend time unless you want to volunteer or you absolutely love cats and don't have any yourself or don't know anyone who has them. I see that someone else talked about this place as a possible stress reliever after having taken a huge exam and I can see how that might work for some. We made an hour reservation and stayed for around 45 minutes. Our apartment with some tea or coffee offers a calmer cat cafe experience for us. read more

I visit New York once a week every month and I ALWAYS stop in here at least once because it is literal perfection. Everyone is so sweet there! the check in process is a lot easier if you get everything done before you walk in otherwise you risk clogging up the entrance and making the process a little more chaotic than necessary for the people working. read more

The cats are adorable; you get to buy some food to feed them and toys to play with them with. If you love cats, cuteness, and furry fun, you will love Brooklyn Cat Cafe! People walking down Atlantic Avenue are immediately drawn to the cafe when they spot the cats sunning themselves in the front window - as they are wont to do. I don't suggest visiting as a walk-in though. Make a reservation so that you don't get turned away if too many people want to play with the cats. They limit the number of people in the facility at a time to keep too many people from crowding in and scaring the animals. Aside from providing a home to cats in need (complete with all the cat toys, cubbies and obstacle courses a feline could want), the cats are almost all up for adoption. So, if you find your kitty soulmate, you can apply to take them home. Otherwise you can just enjoy the company of the cats - some of whom are running around ready to play, others sleeping, and others secured in hiding places you won't even notice until you see a paw move or a swishy tail stick out. It was on my third visit to the cafe (I've brought other cat fans here) that I felt ready to choose a cat to bring home with me. Last fall, I had to put my beloved furry best friend to sleep after 14 years of companionship. I felt devastated and didn't know if I'd ever be able to take in another cat. But, I applied for an adorable adult cat who is white with gray patches. I liked him immediately and he seemed cool with me. The adoption process was simple and straightforward. I applied online and within a week I was approved and they brought the kitty to his new home - my apartment. He's already got his shots and he's neutered since they take care of those needs for all of the cats in the facility. I've been to three cat cafes now: one in Oakland, one in Manhattan, and Brooklyn Cat Cafe - which is tied with Oakland for my fave. Thank you to everyone at BCC for what you do for cats and humans! Common mistake, but there are kitties, guinea piggies, and a HUGE bunny waiting for a forever home. Some cats like Cougar and Lynx LOVE when you give them ALL of the attention, but be mindful of the kitties with red collars. They like their space. The staff is all volunteer and are super cool to talk to. If you find yourself in Brooklyn Heights, stop by and get some kitty therapy. Take one home too if you're able. Adopt! Don't shop! read more

Loved the old location. This new one, not so much. I went in with a friend's son. No one took our waivers or told us what it would cost. I figured $5-$10 or so like the other location where you paid a flat rate when you entered. When I went to pay a rude person asked how long we had been there. I did not know but guessed the time but was not sure. What difference would it make anyway? The young man I came with said we had been there about 30 minutes but this mean woman said, "Well I'm going with the time your friend (what I) said and that's 1-1/2 hours. $40." What should have been a happy time was spoiled by this horrible woman. I am never going back if she is there. As we left a nice staff member explained that they are still getting set up and I should have gotten a sticker with my arrival time on it. Maybe. But whose fault is that? Cat Cafe is a good cause but that rude, awful woman spoiled the cat and kitten experience for me. Had I known I was being charged by the minute I would have set a timer or paid attention to the time. My advice: take a timer with you! I keep telling myself to think of this as a donation but I feel totally taken advantage of and mistreated by this terrible person. OMG! How cute!! My dad and I stopped by after getting brunch (next door). There is a sign on the front window with some brief information that you can read before you go in. Reservations can be made in advance and are recommended, however we did not have a reservation and luckily were still able to come in with no wait. We quickly filled out a required form before coming in. We paid $7/person to spend 30 minutes with the cats. There are so many cats and they are so well taken care of! Most were very friendly (the ones who prefer not to be touched too much, unless they approach you themselves, wear a red collar), playful, and of course, ADORABLE! You can absolutely tell that these cats are so well taken care of. Their fur was super soft and appealing to the touch. There are plenty of toys as well as food and a water fountain available to the cats. There were tiny kittens and some older cats in separate cages, for reasons such as that they have not yet been vaccinated. I already have two cats of my own so I was not looking to adopt any more at this time, but this was still a super fun place to spend some time at. read more

I am officially addicted to cat cafes. I came to Brooklyn Cat Cafe for their opening weekend and had a great time, and they even have several kittens to play with! Walk ins are welcome and the price is reasonable ($5/half hour). I have been to Koneko and Little Lions which were more expensive and did not have any kittens. The cats at Brooklyn Cat Cafe seemed more playful and awake compared to the cats at the other cafes. The human:cat ratio was also better IMO. Most of the kittens were already adopted, but there were also several friendly adult cats too! Definitely $5 well spent. (Note that there is not much of a "cafe", unlike Koneko or Little Lions which have a fully dedicated cafe section. Per the website, tea and coffee is available from the cafe next door.) read more

CAT EXTORTION: There seems to be something shady going on inside the Cat Cafe. My father passed away in February so my mother decided she would love to devote some of her love and time to rescuing a cat and giving it a wonderful home. She visited the cat cafe two weeks ago and fell for Rudy. Rudy had been there about a month, and we were told recently had some dental work, but they said he seemed fully recovered and got his appetite back. After spending 20 minutes inside the cafe (be careful if you go over your allotted 30 minutes, they charge you another $10 for another 30 minutes, no one tells you if you go over you will be charged an additional $10 which we were charged because we were filling out the adoption paperwork) we started to fill out the adoption paperwork online. The FEE for adopting a single adult cat is listed at $150 which we agreed to. After finishing the paperwork, we were told it would take about 2-7 days for them to reach out to the references and give my mother an answer. About 5 days later my mother received a congratulatory email that they have approved her for adoption of Rudy, but she would have to pay $500 for past dental work. NO WHERE DID IT SAY WE HAD TO COVER THE COST OF THE CAT'S PAST MEDICAL EXPENSES AND NOT ONCE DID ANY OF THE EMPLOYEES INSIDE THE CAT CAFE SAY WE WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYING FOR RUDY'S DENTAL WORK IF WE CHOOSE TO ADOPT HIM. WE DID ASK WHAT THE FEE WOULD BE, THEY SAID TO LOOK ON THE WEBSITE BECAUSE THEY COULDN'T REMEMBER. WHICH I THOUGHT WAS ODD BUT WE DID AND THE FEE WAS LISTED AS $150 FOR A SINGLE ADULT CAT. The employees were disingenuous to say the least. They should have been upfront about their fees (not donations, fees) from the start. Nowhere inside the cafe (store) or on the website does it say that if the cat you are adopting has been treated for something that you would have to pay for that treatment. The Cat Cafe preys on your emotions and tries to guilt people into giving more money. They give a bad name to cat adoption and are hurting the chances of these poor cats from being adopted into loving homes. My mother was heartbroken about this. She had everything ready to bring Rudy home, but she cannot afford to give the Cat Cafe another $500 for the adoption. Keep in mind we spent close to $100 inside the cafe on our visit. Disclosing costs mid process feels like they are trying to extort more from a person who already showed commitment and serious interest, and now they are trying to leverage that to their advantage. I'm angry and disgusted at this situation and had to warn others before you fall into the same trap. Sadly, it's the animals that will be hurt by this behavior. read more

You should read the other excellent reviews detailing how this place is not a cafe but more of an interactive cat rescue/adoption storefront. Several people have accurately and fairly described that part of the experience. What you'll likely need to experience yourself is the blissful calm that comes from holding a warm, super soft kitty in your lap and petting her until she's purring at a low soft rumble. Or spending 15 minutes causing the tabby next to you to roll around on the couch as he bats at the feather-on-string you keep just out of reach. Or the very amusing scenario of a giant cat wheel that a bushy- tailed sweetheart runs on, never quite catching the sock dangling just above her head. The cats are delightful just being cats. Some will nip - if it bothers you don't bother them. If it doesn't, you'll get some play time. Others will sit next to you, some will sit on you. A few you can pick up. Most will ignore you. It's what cats do. And I love them for it. The socialization is good for the cats and the people. What a great idea. Just don't expect a sandwich. And there's a kitten cam!! read more

The best cat cafe I've been to in NYC! It's $7/30 minutes and it's totally worth it. Planned to go for 30 minutes but ended up staying for an hour! There are so many cats here so even if a few are napping, there will always be at least a few active ones to play and pet. The best part is the option to get some treats for the cats for a quarter so come with those prepared! They also have a kitten section to watch and other animals as well like rats and turtles. If you're here to eat/drink, this is not your place but they do have some available in a mini fridge. The focus here is definitely on the cats, you can tell everyone who worked here is very passionate and knowledgeable about the cats here. read more
