Of all the reports dealing with hearing aids, the scariest is the connection between hearing loss and dementia. That sounds like just marketing, but several studies confirm the association. With that in mind, how do you deal with hearing loss decades before dementia can settle its claws into your life? The best, if you have hearing loss, is to get yourself a pair of aids in an industry that has progressed in leaps and bounds during the past decade. I almost did not have that luck. I tried three times to kick dementia under the bus by going to several hearing clinics over the past twenty years. I had to return the aids to all of them within a 45-day period to get refunded. Finally in 2026 I found my hearing aids Shangri-la. That wonderful dispenser of hearing aids is Brooklyn Audiology Associates, which has three branches in Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Heights location, a mere 20-minutes' walk from my apartment, is staffed by "hearing aid experts," as they call themselves. I had the luck to be treated by John, in the business for a few decades, and be helped as well by Annie at the reception desk, setting appointments and even giving the aids a thorough cleaning during my visits. The company goes beyond New York State Law by allowing clients to return their just-fitted hearing aids for up to 60 days, 15 days beyond the legal requirement. John gave me the standard audio test. The print-out showed that I had moderate to severe hearing loss. I signed up for hearing aids, which includes one year of service, for periodic check-ups and adjustments. Plus: United Federation of Teachers gives its members and retirees like me up to $4000 in rebates for each three-year period. (Check whether your union has similar goodies.) During my follow-up visits, I had the Phonak aids adjusted three times until now I often fall asleep not realizing that I am still wearing them! The Phonak equipment is not cheap. This is a high-end product that can last up to four years, with a new audiology test determining whether your hearing has diminished with age. I think you will be pleased with the service you get, particularly important because adjustments may be needed especially during the first 60 days. I was fortunate in that my left hearing aid needed an adjustment beyond the 60 days: no problem here. Chances are you will be set up with an RIC, or Receiver-in-Canal, in which the bodies holding the chargeable batteries are behind the ear. John fixed me up with an ITE, or In-The-Ear aids, each of which is a solid, individual unit. I received another audiology test a few days ago, three months after I ordered the aids, and discovered that in most frequencies, my hearing progressed to the 0-20 score. That's the gold standard for normal hearing. Don't annoy your friends by saying "what?" or "can you repeat that?" or pretending that you understand what they are saying only to baffle them with your retorts. Get your hearing fixed and give your pals the opportunity to hear your witty banter. I think I am witty since John gets to pretend that I am Brooklyn's Jimmy Kimmel, Steve Colbert, and Jon Stewart, all wrapped in one. read more

I've been using this audiologist for over 15 years and have progressed from in the ear, behind the ear, to my current hearing aids, which are Lyrics that are installed and removed by the audiologist. In the interim, I've tried other audiologists because Brooklyn Audiology's office in Brooklyn Heights is only open two days a week and I wanted to have an audiologist available in my neighborhood more frequently. So if I need an audiologist and he is not scheduled to be in my neighborhood, I travel to his Bay Ridge office. This audiologist is the most considerate and thorough of all the audiologists I have tried, and the staff is very accommodating and efficient. I am hearing impaired and went to purchase a set of hearing aids from Brooklyn Audiology Associates PC located at 8502 4th Avenue. I purchased a set of Oticon and was charged 6K. I subsequently found a reputable seller that sold the same exact hearing aids for under 5K. When I asked Brooklyn Audiology Associates PC why they charged me more than 1K more for the same hearing aids I got a whole story about how I can come back to them every few months and how good they were, so on and so forth. I immediately returned the hearing aids to Brooklyn Audiology Associates PC. First of all, just about any set of hearing aids comes with a try out period and if you keep them the hearing aids can be brought back, typically without charge, for necessary periodic adjustments. Accordingly, Brooklyn Audiology Associates PC was terribly overpriced for this set of hearing aids. I would avoid Brooklyn Audiology Associates PC like I would avoid the plague. To keep sellers like Brooklyn Audiology Associates PC honest, I think the law should require all hearing aid providers to post their prices in a conspicuous manner so that consumers can comparison shop freely and know when they are getting ripped off. read more

My mother is hearing impaired and I took her to purchase a set of hearing aids from Brooklyn Audiology Associates PC located at 8502 4th Avenue. She purchased a Lyric subscription and was charged a little over $3k. We had nothing to lose since for $400 downpayment we were told it comes with a free try out period and if it doesn't work it can be brought back without charge, otherwise we have to pay the balance. After usage, we found out it didn't work that well, other than serving and providing an effect of a placebo. I returned the hearing aid, and was told that I would be given a credit of $1800, but that I would have still owe a balance of $1200. I told them why if it didn't work and they responded that they can remove the balance owed if I paid for a better one that cost double. I said no way and they responded that I should get the best for my mom; what kind of daughter I am? How rude is that? Who are they to tell me how to be daughter? Now he threatned to send me to collection. If I get one call, I'm taking the company and the doctor to small claims for the return of my $400. He is playing games with the wrong client. read more

I have been going to their 2 locations (brooklyn height and bay ridge) for almost 2 years and satisfied with the quality of care and service. i use lyric hearing aids. phonak, the company who owns it is crappy, useless and usually is clueless when consumers contact them with questions or problems. i wish i could change to a different product/company but there isnt an alternative at this time as far as i know. i think the product (lyric hearing aid) is flawed and defective. many times i had to go in for replacements as often as every 3-4 wk (instead of 3 months as advertised) but brooklyn audiology has been great help and usually get me in very quickly (1-2 days) when i need an appointment. the price is average ($1700 per ear, $50 discount per ear to renew). the only negative thing is the wait could be a little long with certain audiologists. read more

I went with my dad to the Bay Ridge office and Angela, who said she is the office manager, was absolutely awful. She had the worst attitude, was nasty, haughty, extremely unhelpful, obnoxious, and the most horrible person I have ever encountered. Combine that with the 2 hour wait, overcrowded office that is so small there was no room to sit, and the terrible "service" , it's a complete disaster. I had to come from California to help my grandmother and get her settled as she had the early signs of Alzheimer's and had a lot of trouble hearing anything as well. So I took her here in 2005. We went in for a consultation and then went to her bank to pick up the $2300 for the deposit. We brought the money back the same day and were told that in a week she would need to come back with the remainder of the money and come in for the final fitting. I would be back in California by then and my cousin was supposed to take my grandma back to the office. She wasn't able to in that time frame. After just 2 weeks my grandmother was getting disoriented and was no longer able to live by herself. We relocated her California and had someone move into her apartment in the meantime. A few years passed as we were taking care of her affairs and we never received any written correspondence to her apartment or calls from this office about the payment. I then found the paper work and begin trying to reach someone from the office about this. I was told they would have to check their archives to look for her file and they would get back to me. Weeks went by and nothing. I called many times. I sent them the receipts by fax and mailed them. After many phone calls to try to talk to the owner (Richard Kanor) and many faxes showing the receipt I was never contacted and completely ignored. These people are crooks they got their money and ran. Do not use this office look elsewhere! read more
