Of all the reports dealing with hearing aids, the scariest is the connection between hearing loss…read moreand dementia. That sounds like just marketing, but several studies confirm the association. With that in mind, how do you deal with hearing loss decades before dementia can settle its claws into your life? The best, if you have hearing loss, is to get yourself a pair of aids in an industry that has progressed in leaps and bounds during the past decade. I almost did not have that luck. I tried three times to kick dementia under the bus by going to several hearing clinics over the past twenty years. I had to return the aids to all of them within a 45-day period to get refunded. Finally in 2026 I found my hearing aids Shangri-la. That wonderful dispenser of hearing aids is Brooklyn Audiology Associates, which has three branches in Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Heights location, a mere 20-minutes' walk from my apartment, is staffed by "hearing aid experts," as they call themselves. I had the luck to be treated by John, in the business for a few decades, and be helped as well by Annie at the reception desk, setting appointments and even giving the aids a thorough cleaning during my visits. The company goes beyond New York State Law by allowing clients to return their just-fitted hearing aids for up to 60 days, 15 days beyond the legal requirement. John gave me the standard audio test. The print-out showed that I had moderate to severe hearing loss. I signed up for hearing aids, which includes one year of service, for periodic check-ups and adjustments. Plus: United Federation of Teachers gives its members and retirees like me up to $4000 in rebates for each three-year period. (Check whether your union has similar goodies.) During my follow-up visits, I had the Phonak aids adjusted three times until now I often fall asleep not realizing that I am still wearing them! The Phonak equipment is not cheap. This is a high-end product that can last up to four years, with a new audiology test determining whether your hearing has diminished with age. I think you will be pleased with the service you get, particularly important because adjustments may be needed especially during the first 60 days. I was fortunate in that my left hearing aid needed an adjustment beyond the 60 days: no problem here. Chances are you will be set up with an RIC, or Receiver-in-Canal, in which the bodies holding the chargeable batteries are behind the ear. John fixed me up with an ITE, or In-The-Ear aids, each of which is a solid, individual unit. I received another audiology test a few days ago, three months after I ordered the aids, and discovered that in most frequencies, my hearing progressed to the 0-20 score. That's the gold standard for normal hearing. Don't annoy your friends by saying "what?" or "can you repeat that?" or pretending that you understand what they are saying only to baffle them with your retorts. Get your hearing fixed and give your pals the opportunity to hear your witty banter. I think I am witty since John gets to pretend that I am Brooklyn's Jimmy Kimmel, Steve Colbert, and Jon Stewart, all wrapped in one.

I've tried twice before in the last 6 years, and the aids I was prescribed made no difference. I was referred to Dr. Yerdon by Hearing Planet. (Of course the initial cost is very high) I am so pleased that I am able to understand my sons without asking them to repeat everything. So far so good.

I suggest you run, don't walk from this horrible hearing aid clinic. Have been having problems with…read morethem since August of last year simply trying to get hearing aids for my 90 year old mother. They mess up everything they try to do. First they messed up the first ear impression we had to do, then had to go back a second time with each time costing $80 in a round trip car service and a half day off work. When this is brought to their attention, they simply do not care. They ordered the wrong model hearing aids, of course blamed it on the company, Tru Hearing, who blamed the mistake on the clinic. These games went on for a few months with my mother not being able to hear. They also pushed the Starkey brand on us, saying it was the only hearing aid suitable for your needs. Not true. That may be because they are affiliated with Starkey, based on what I saw on the internet for their 3245 Nostrand Ave. location. Then, they finally got the correct hearing aids in. And, when I took my mom in to be fitted with them, the young lady (let's call her "A") was very gruff with my disabled mom, saying "why does she keep moving ? I'm not touching her". That was because her ears are extremely sensitive and she was scared. You would think they'd be more patient with elderly people, as they buy most of the hearing aids. After I dragged my 90 year old mom to their clinic 4 times. They agreed to Federal Express them overnight to us since they made so many mistakes. The genius employee never took the package to Fed Ex, instead dropping these $2400 hearing aids in a Mail Box place drop box, where they sat for 4 more days. So the woman from their Long Island office had to drive into Brooklyn to pick up the package and re-send it properly. That was in November and we started this process last August. Then today I went to their 3245 Nostrand Ave. location. in Brooklyn to pick up a replacement hearing aid, since the left one fell out of my mom's ear. This, after they assured me this model hearing aid will never fall out. Low and behold, the same girl "A" comes out with a co-worker to give me the hearing aid, asking for the $215 fee. I look at them and once again it was the wrong model and way too big for my mom's ear. I asked why nobody bothered to check the hearing aid when it was delivered to them, based on past problems, before making me come all the way out there spending another $80 on the car service. And, why did she bother programming it and giving it to me when she could easily see it was much bigger than the other one. Just plain STUPIDITY or IGNORANCE. Of course, they just danced around my valid questions and never answered me. And, they started all over again passing the blame on to other people. The head of this so called clinic even denied saying things to me he said back in the fall, which I can prove. So, a 90 year old disabled woman continues to go with out being able to hear, but they were too busy trying to get out for the holiday. I strongly suggest you let your elderly loved one just go deaf rather than give these morons any business. Thank you J in Brooklyn, NY
