The hotel was very nice and just elegant enough. The rooms were very clean and comfortable, even though the bath tub/shower was quite small. A morning breakfast bar was a definite highlight for us and our young granddaughters. There was a great selection and an attentive service staff made sure all items on the buffet were available. Highlights to me were the soda bread, Irish bacon, and pastries. If there would be one complaint, it would be the television programming available, especially for young girls.

Hotel is very busy with tours and golfers making up most of the guests it appears. Well decorated and very comfortable area around the hotel to read a book or sit by the fireplace. We had what we were told a 'smart' room but we're still trying to figure out what was smart about it. The lights are controlled by either a wall pad or pads at the bedside. Problem is that there doesn't seem to be a way to just have bathroom lights on without the bedroom lights bring on as well. Looks like you could turn off the bed lights bring which would take it off the 'smart' pads and the lamp switches are not easily accessible if you have to access them again. Our other issue was with the 'smart' tv. Turning on the tv the hotel's information screen would come on. Selecting the tv option gets you the tv which is where the problem starts. Hitting the Guide button, which on other tvs, gets you a list of channels and what shows are on. Pressing this one takes you back to the hotel screen. Going back into the tv you find that you'll see each tv station available and in order to know what's on you need to look at each channel separately. Not a pleasant experience. Jack, our porter who was very helpful providing information about the hotel, tried to figure out what was going on but couldn't. Another porter also tried to help but again was stumped. Reported the issue at the reception desk. Was told they would have someone look at it. Came back in the afternoon to find the tv on and thought the problem was fixed (no notes left telling us what happened) but nothing was changed. Reported it again, was told someone would look at but again nothing. Should also mention when we first arrived at the room it appeared the room had not been vacuumed. Same thing the next day so that had to be reported as well. Rating is given because of the lack of interest or concern of the staff about the problems that we were having. Lovely hotel, very comfortable, good food but if the staff commitment isn't there that just detracts from the experience.

The hotel itself feels warm and sophisticated with many areas to take a seat and relax near a fireplace or in a quieter area. This is a great destination for rejuvenation and restoration. The restaurant near the lobby is exceptional with meticulous attention to every detail of service, though you may need a reservation. The presentation of food and allergens are neatly detailed for every offering with many gluten free options. The food was delicious and perfectly prepared and the service exceptional. The room itself is very well appointed and laid out in one of the most travel friendly designs I have seen. A desk, a seating area with a table to enjoy your morning beverage by the window, a refrigerator neatly hidden under the television. A closet with ample space but also a shelf to organize your travel items and clothing on the other side of the room wall so things stay neatly out of site. Thank you to the designer of this room! Robes and slippers for two placed at the foot of the bed. A nice size Tv and coffee or tea service at the desk. The bathroom includes both a shower and a comfortable size bathtub. The hotel also offers a nice bar downstairs and please consider making a spa appointment to enhance your experience. If you are in the area, this is the place to stay.

The Malton Killarney Hotel - Garden Room Restaurant

4.5 stars Full…read moredisclosure: We received a complimentary room upgrade to a Junior Suite at check-in and were placed in the room located directly above the hotel's main entrance. We were also treated to a complimentary sample of sweets in celebration of our honeymoon. The Malton does "historical hotel" right. It successfully achieves an elegant and vintage atmosphere without seeming "dated." The building itself makes a memorable impression covered in ivy surrounded by beautiful gardens. The Malton is an oasis in the heart of Killarney - within walking distance of all the shops and pubs. The room was gorgeous and the bathroom was supplied with modern amenities that still kept that classic touch. It's worth noting that the hotel does not have air conditioning, but we still found our room to be comfortable. Our only complaint about the room is that it is a little noisy (because of its location about the entrance, no doubt.) Breakfast included the typical array of pastries, meats, and cheeses, but also featured a made-to-order hot food menu with ample variety. The Belgian waffle was worth noting - it was coated in cinnamon and every bite was scrumptious. (It's a bit small though - order 2!) Unfortunately, the restaurant is not managed very well during breakfast. You must wait to be seated by a host, who may then take your order for coffee/tea and toast to pass along to your server - which really slows the seating process. The dining room is tightly packed, making it a little difficult for wheelchairs or strollers to maneuver. (Even on foot, winding your way to the buffet can be difficult.) One thing I wish we had done, but didn't have time - the Malton's wine tasting room!

Three lattes with scones later in an elegant lounge area reeking with character as a former Great Southern railway hotel, we moseyed off to our meeting resolving unanimously to return for lunch before our afternoon train if time permitted. Which it duly did. Steak sandwiches for two and salad for the sad vegetarian were deemed excellent. As it was Friday and we'd had a productive meeting I awarded myself a beer. At 2 in the afternoon. Such decadence. Thus replenished we boarded our train back to the shmoke. If the rest of the hotel is anything like the food in the restaurant I will definitely stay here should the opportunity present. Excellent.
