I don't remember what the cocktail was, but it was the prettiest one I've ever had. Delicious too
    Lisa H.

This review is strictly for Monk's Lounge. We stopped in after our very long morning of hiking Torc Waterfall, walking to Muckross House, and taking a Jaunting cart back to the waterfall...we were starving, and it was just barely 11:00am, so nothing else nearby was open. We were seated right away, wherever we wanted, and it was empty (as they'd just opened). In retrospect, we really should have sat by the fireplace, as it was a cool morning, and sitting by the fire would have been incredible. Our mistake. We ordered a couple of drinks...I got the prettiest cocktail I've ever had, and I'm really sad that I can't remember what it was called. It was really good. Light and refreshing. We also got scones, as they weren't serving food besides scones yet. The scone was amazing. Maybe I'm just saying that because I'm obsessed with scones...because every single one I ate was amazing...but I digress. When noon rolled around, we ordered some food: seafood chowder and a steak sandwich. The chowder was flavorful but thin. It was less like a chowder and more like a cream based soup...not thick enough to be a chowder. The steak sandwich was ok. It was a little hard to bite into for me (really large chunks of steak that didn't tear easily), but again, it was flavorful. Service was polite, but a bit aloof. All in all, the reason for only 3 stars was that it was really kind of expensive for what we got, when the quality of the food (besides the scone) was just kind of "meh." I wouldn't say "stay away", just maybe come in for cocktails, tea, and scones, and skip the other offerings.

Highly recommend staying here if you are visiting. I really enjoyed my time here. The service, amenities, and the food were all so lovely. The food was quite delicious. We decided to add the breakfast buffet for our stay. The breakfast is buffet style. Their Irish breakfast is wonderful especially with the scrabble eggs if you want to add a little twist to your full Irish breakfast. They also offer yogurt, pastries, juices, and cold cuts for their buffet. The service is so wonderful. Everyone is so friendly and wagered to help. I really enjoyed taking to the concierge they were always so helpful with activities and booking our appointments. I highly recommend going to the spa everyday that you stay! It's so relaxing and rejuvenating. I loved the spa soo much.

Hotel review: booked a Jr Suite also have friends in a Jr Suite on another floor. This hotel is suppose to be 5 star and we booked a suite. Our room is not 5 stars and is not up to my standards for a suite. Very low ceilings, bathroom has a large tub but very small shower and a very small WC. The view is out of the front of the hotel over looking the parking lot and arrival drive up. The room AC is moderate (probable reason there is a floor fan also in our suite). The bathroom needs updating and has cracks in the sink. The description of Jr Suite is nothing like what is described. We both booked on same day back in December. It's not a bad hotel but again I'm rating this as not optimal for a 5 star hotel that I booked a Jr suite. Our friends have a much much better suite that's semi-updated and large bathroom and open seating. They also have a walkout balcony. They had an updated bathroom with larger shower and a toilet without a small closet. They even had a room gift with wine and chocolates in their room. We paid the same yet our room is far substandard. Really feels awful to know you are paying the same yet getting so much less. Yes- we complained and the staff was nice but was unable to accommodate any changes. They did give us wine and chocolates and said it was some how overlooked. (Since our friends had on their room and we didn't). No rate changes just an apology that it's an old hotel and the rooms are very different. Warning/tip: If you stay here and pay a price for 5 Star please know what room you are getting! Rates should be different for not updated rooms with lesser views and amenities.

Unfortunately we were very disappointed with our stay at Muckross Park Hotel and Spa. We are frequent travelers and often stay at 5 star properties. We did not feel that Muckross Park met this standard of rating. While most staff were very friendly and accommodating, hence the second star on this rating, we have several complaints about our stay: We found the decor throughout the hotel to be dated, and we found there to be a musty, stale odor in the corridors during our stay. There were faux floral arrangements throughout the hotel which we didn't feel were in keeping 5 star hospitality. When ordering food at the Monk's Lounge, the waiter verified our order with us on two separate occasions but still delivered the incorrect items to two members of our party. While the food was fine, it was not what had been ordered. We were in a rush so unable to send it back. We found the Monk's Lounge to have an overpowering odor that put us off from returning for afternoon tea. On one evening we attempted to dine at Major Colgan's. While we did not have a reservation, we observed that multiple tables were available. We asked to be seated in a quieter section as one of our party was hard of hearing. We were told that we could not be accommodated and had only the choice of a table directly in front of the loud, live music. The hostess was unwilling to make any exceptions on our behalf so we were unable to dine there. Additionally, we felt incredibly mislead by the representation of Muckross Park Apartments which are advertised on the hotel website as self catering accommodations for up to four people. We felt it was not sufficiently clear on the website that this property is rated separately from the hotel, and that the quality of these apartments does not match the hotel. The apartment that was used by our party had dirty carpets with cigarette burns, areas where the paint was peeling from the walls, cracked tile and mold in the bathroom... We do feel that the Muckross Park could and should be clearer in their communications about this property to prevent other people being so disappointment in the future.

Our room was spacious and filled with antique furniture.. I love antiques. We had our private patio space with patio furniture and with the most scenic emerald green views! Appreciated the complimentary book provided regarding the history of the hotel, complimentary water, and bike rentals (wish we had time to utilize the bikes!) The breakfast room was a nice addition. There was a mini buffet ( just a few items like fruit, granola, etc) and a made to order menu. Food was just ok. The hotel does have a high end restaurant- must make reservation, and a casual bar restaurant. Perusing the hotel lobby and adjacent rooms were lovely. Wish we had more time here. Killarney National Park was nearby and within walking distance. We walked to and from and within the entire park, and booked in 11 miles!!! My only small complaint is that the room felt a little damp, probably because of the weather.
