Broken Arrow Nursery states in their brochure that they offer a 1 year guarantee on plants purchased. They actually don't. We purchased 2 plants last summer-1 thrived and other hasn't. They were planted in the same spot. We requested an exchange or healthier plant in place of the weaker plant. Request was denied, with explanation being that weaker plant had some growth. No interest in customer satisfaction for a $39 plant. Shame on them! Andi C read more

It's unlikely you'll just happen to find this place unless you're looking for it as it's somewhat off the beaten path in the sticks of Hamden (and I didn't even know Hamden had sticks). This place is not a traditional nursery where you would go buy your flowers every spring. They specialize in shrubs and trees and general landscaping type things. We were looking for a Japanese dogwood tree for the yard as they do not grow particularly huge and would work perfectly in a spot in our yard. We had this place recommended to us by a landscaper so we thought we would check it out. They had exactly what we were looking for and after we [finally] found someone to dig it up for us we took it home and planted it. Within a couple days things didn't seem right. The pedals all fell off. Then within a week or so the leaves started to die as well. I watered it daily so I don't understand what happened. Within 3 weeks or so the tree was completely dead (see photo). So I sent an email with the photos and receipt to the nursery but never heard anything. Then I stopped by a couple weeks later and one of the people that worked there said he was aware of the situation but that the owner wasn't there that day. He said the owner would be in touch and we would come up with a solution to the problem. That was a couple weeks ago and I still haven't heard anything and I have pretty much given up on them trying to make things right. I understand there's risk when you plant a new tree (though I never had a problem in the past) but it seems like bad customer service to not even bother to call or email me back. 5 star businesses try to make their customers happy and 1-2 star businesses don't. So there you have it, one star for Broken Arrow. 9/5/16 Update. They did give me a new tree. I guess if it dies this time it's on me. Review updated to three stars. read more

Daunting shrubs and trees but not the showy presentation a garden shop patron looks for. Latin nearly required, plant lover essential, and though some light gardeners can appreciate this spot it's likely for those looking for the unusual. Ex. dozen varieties of Mt. Laurel. Worth the stop if looking to fill a dead spot in the garden with something out of the ordinary but allocate at least an hour to truly take in the demonstration gardens and varieties zvailable. read more

I regret that I have forgotten the name of the gentleman who helped me. He saw me looking and asked if I needed help and when I admitted that I needed a lot of help, he walked the entire grounds with me, answering every question (even the dumb ones - and without flinching) and showed me plants that fit the requirements I had. He knew every plant by Latin name and what they required and what made them unusual. Of course I spent more than I thought I would but I never expected to find such a vast collection of unusual plants! Not to say that they were overall pricey. Actually, most of their products were priced in line with what I would expect. A few things were a little sticker shocking but again, they were rare specimens - the types of plants you stumble upon in fancy home magazines that showcase only the most beautiful gardens. The owner popped out during my visit. She is a lovely woman with spunk, plant knowledge and personality. You can tell the folks employed by her have a great deal of respect (for her) and they all work well together. That says a lot about her business. I will be back. I've been dreaming of a special tree they had... As I was driving away, I was still trying to think of a place to put the trees & plants that I didn't purchase (because I wasn't sure I that I had the room at home!) read more

For avid gardeners and beginners alike, this place is truly in a class by itself. Even if you know very little about gardening and are just starting off, this is a great place to visit because the staff is exceptionally helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. They really take the time to give you the help you need. Plus, the prices are quite reasonable and when you consider the quality of their plants, the prices are down-right fantastic. Now if you're a gardener, this place is heaven. No where else will you find this kind of selection and quality of unusual plants. And, they take such great care of everything. A stroll through their sales area and the surrounding gardens is truly a pleasure any time of the season. Their catalog is excellent and incredibly informative. I always learn a lot when browsing through it. And, their classes are great. This is also a great place to visit around the Holidays. Great Christmas trees and wreaths, etc. and again, great classes. I drive here once or twice a season and even though the drive is at least 2 hours each way, it's always very, very well worth it. I can't say enough good things. If you really, truly know your plant stores/nurseries then you'll know that for quality/selection of plants and customer service, this is one of the top places in the country. read more

Good selection of trees and plants that you don't see at other Ct. nurseries. Last year I picked up several Magnolia trees that have done well through the winter. Not the cheapest of prices- so you are really paying for finding things not available elsewhere. Made a point of asking if they will guarantee the trees I was buying with a refund if they die and don't overwinter. They don't-so know that before buying. read more

I have bought a couple dozen perennials and two small shrubs at Broken Arrow Nursery over the past three years I have lived nearby. I am a serious amateur when it comes to gardening. Overall, this is a great nursery. The plants are generally quite healthy, and varieties that are hard to find elsewhere are available. However, I have some words of caution for those planning a visit: 1. PRICES: Though one expects to pay more for unusual varieties, I have learned that it is not worth it to buy common plants at Broken Arrow. Perennials tend to be $2-5 more per plant than identical ones at other area nurseries, such as Paradise Nursery just down the road. Shrubs are $10-40 more per plant. For one example (I have many), a beautiful native shrub variety I paid $35 for at Broken Arrow last summer I just saw at Millane Nursery in Cromwell for $25, and it was twice as big! 2. NATIVE PLANTS: Broken Arrow is touted as a great place in Connecticut to buy native plants. If this is important to you, BEWARE. I have found incorrectly labeled and even misleadingly labeled plants there. Furthermore, when I asked for advice in guiding me to native varieties last summer, I ended up with over $20-worth of what turned out to be "Japanese Joe Pye Weed" (it was not labeled as such, and I didn't look up the scientific name until later). The salesperson assured me it was the same as the native Joe Pye Weed I was looking for. Not a big deal if you don't care about natives, but distressing to say the least if you do and are under the impression that Broken Arrow is a pillar of the native plant community. Just be cautious, and check the scientific names before you buy. I don't want to sell these folks short -- they are very friendly and the place is beautiful. I'm just an increasingly cautious shopper, and think others might benefit from these lessons I learned the hard way. read more

DO NOT ORDER FROM TIS NURSERY! I ordered a variegated dogwood tree , it was expensive around 70. but I really have been wanting it so I ordered it to be delivered around April 1st. It came dormant, so I really couldn't see if it was healthy until the leaves started to pop open. Well , the leaves were curled and discolored, very sickly looking , I thought maybe they would straighten out after a week or so ,but it just got worse, I had the same problem as the other reviewer here , leaves turned brown , I emailed and Facebook messaged and was told that the pics were not clear enough, which they were since I sent several, I even sent another close-up, and there's only one person that tells you that they want to help but then you hear nothing from the grower ,I told them that I want a refund , just hear crickets , they may have ripped me off for this purchase but this review will be seen by many and I hope it will keep others from ordering . There are many other nurseries that offer healthy rare plants and great service . read more

I had so much fun there today. I participated in a weed, walk, and talk. We learned about the nursery, looked at some interesting had tools, helped to weed part of their trial gardens, asked the experts all kinds of questions, watched demos of dividing perennials, helped plant some (until thunderstorms cut it short), and they were kind enough to let us have some pass alongs! Plus of course I bought a few things too - place is full of unusual specimens, especially variegated things! Definitely worth the 2.5 hour drive each way. Yes, I got variegated daylily!!! They don't have the warranty on the plants(not even 1 month) like other nurseries does. Just be careful with expensive plants. Their attitude were bad. I just bought the tree just tree weeks and it died. They just blamed that I over watering. I did the same with other plants and they had no problem. Thank you for the awful service!!!!!!! read more

Broken Arrow is the for maven and collector,not for the Mr. Chanins who fare better off at Home Depot. As for "bad attitude"--it's called really knowing what you're doing. If you can't take the heat (and aren't gardener enough to know botanical Latin), stay out of the kitchen. read more
