I was planning to get pots and go home and repot them myself. The manager mentioned that they offered a repot service. She let me borrow a wax tray to go and grab my plants, and was able to repot them all before they closed (within an hour). The vibes are immaculate; from the plant selection, product merchandising, and music choice. Let's talk plants: there was a good variety of species in the shop. They all looked well cared for and healthy. The only downside is the price. This store is definitely not for those looking for a deal on plants. The plants are priced for their size, species, coloring, and then add some $$. Could you find a similar plant for a lower priced at a Home Depot? Probably. But these plants are very cute and I wouldn't let the price deter you from coming in. Let's talk services: there is a potting station where a team member will help you plant your new friend. I also believe they will repot an existing plant you have. The team members are extremely knowledgeable and are very willing to help you pick out the right plant for you. They also do plant consultations which is really cool! What a great experience. We admit to not having green thumbs, we knew we needed some plants at home and we wanted to get it right. So we went local and through a recommendation found ourselves in green plant heaven. Ok, over dramatic. We enter, we were greeted in a very friendly way, and immediately you see the way the decorations highlight and celebrate all things green. We asked for help and a very knowledgeable person helped us find low light (vs needs a lot of light, which they sperate in the space) and which were pet friendly and which needed minimal care. Pots galore to help place the plant in the right spot in the right room. When checking out, another knowledgeable friendly person making sure we got how to water, when and feed. We even got a reminder card with notes! They just made it a great experience and now that we are home, we need to go back and get some more!. read more

Here's a recent example: Last week, I had a plant crisis: my favorite plant -- a gloriously large begonia I purchased in honor of a dearly departed friend -- was dying and mostly gone. Despite my best efforts to save her, the fungal disease had already taken over. I was desperate to find a way to at least keep some part of her alive. So I reached out to Bark & Vine for help with emergency plant surgery and received incredible support. Isabella and Mariah talked me through how to propagate cane begonias from stem nodes, and were more than happy to advise. Then the next day, knowing how much sentimental value this begonia had for me, Christine reached out to me with a miracle: by chance, a stem from my original plant had actually fallen off and been propagated at the store into an adorable 4 inch beauty, which I could come by to pick up. This little shop is a great addition to New Haven. They have a wide variety of beautiful and interesting house plants at reasonable prices. I have, so far, limited myself to only taking home a barrel cactus, a pencil cactus (or fire stick plant), and a small myrtle topiary. As soon as I find more space, I will be back again! Don't think you have a green thumb? That's ok! They will help you out. They will give you tips or make some recommendations based on your space, your schedule, and the well-being of other occupants in your residence (i.e. pets, children). They also have a variety of cute planters, pots, and accessories in addition to some unique gifts and goodies. They have the cutest animal pots! I was so excited to have a cute plant store in the neighborhood but was quite disappointed with what I got. I first got this little tree which they assured me would be an easy plant to take care of. They gave me a nice little card that showed how to take care of it (how much to water, lighting, etc). I did exactly as they said and two weeks later I noticed most of its leaves had fallen off. I took it back in to see what I was doing wrong and if I can return it. I was told it had bugs, so they sprayed it and sent me back home. They recommended I get some bug spray and periodically spray it. I did what they said, only for this plant to fully lose all of its leaves within two months after my purchase. Right before that plant died, I also purchased a pothos. Figured I'd give this easy to take care of plant a try. Again I did exactly what I was told to do on the card they gave me and one month later all it's leaves were dead. I have several other thriving plants in my apartment so I'm not sure what's going on with these guys. Maybe there were bugs which my bug spay couldn't contain? Regardless, after spending $70 total on these two plants only for them to be fully dead within 3 months is very disappointing. read more

I have been coming here intermittently since the store opened and it is a wonderful well lit oasis that immediately calms the soul as soon as you enter, it makes you want to stay forever. The plants are spilt into two sections: low light (back) and full sun plants (in the front), and along the walls are the pet friendly varietals and succulents. The staff here is very friendly, will help you rehab any plant, even if you didn't buy it there, and if you bring your dogs (welcomed and encouraged), Bark and Vine has treats they will feed them. In addition to flowers/plants, they also sells tools, pots and nets to hang plants from your ceiling, plant themed greeting cards, and local artisan goods (soaps, candles, crystals, oh my!). I did take a star away because it is part of the card- only trend, which I have mentioned before is exclusionary for lower income folks. It is a bit pricy, but the value shows in the care they give to their plants. Bark and Vine is a healing addition to fast changing neighborhood that I hope that everyone in and around Ninth Square can experience at least once. read more

We were excited to have a new plant and flower shop in the area and we were, of course, rooting for any business trying to start up in this climate of fear and panic. We got a pre-opening invite through Yale but I wasn't able to join my wife for it. Unfortunately, when she got home she had to report that the shop was a bust. Just a bunch of overpriced lower-than-usual quality plants laid out in an attractive retail space. Some weeks went by and I thought I would give them another shot. Maybe it was just a rough open. I called first to make sure that had what I wanted and that the quality was good. I was cautiously optimistic. But optimism didn't last long. First, if you are expecting the stereotypical flamboyant and friendly staff......nah. Lazy and rude. Second, if you were expecting FLORIST-quality plants.....nah. My advice is to try The Blossom Shop which is always reliable for orders / deliveries. Frankly, you can get similar quality to Bark & Vine at Shop-Rite or Big Y and get your shopping done at the same time. For the nice design layout of the space I bump them up from one star to two star. I would be great if a really good coffee shop rents that space when Bark & Vine is done with it. I bought a Thai Constellation Monstera from Bark & Vine last month and it literally took only one month to turn into a wilted pile of rot. I had bought the plant with the intention of giving it as a gift to my sister but unfortunately this was a root rotted plant that started dying the first week I had it. It seemed very overwatered when I got it but I trusted a boutique store charging $425.00 for a plant knew best. I personally own over 80 different houseplants and am not a novice. I spoke with the owner who did offer a refund but only for that week or to try and "rehab" the plant at home with his advice. During the month their recommendations about the plant care changed several times and it was clear they did not know how to help or save this plant. Turns out that when I bought the plant initially it was too far gone to save at all. Before this experience I had bought a Pinstripe Calethea that developed heavy infestation spider mites in two weeks after bringing it home I think that the owners are just plant enthusiasts that stock Instagram famous plants but don't have any idea about how to actually keep these plants alive. I am extremely disappointed and will not be back. I would advise others to change the soil and wash their plants when buying from this store. Not sure how to respond to the owners respond other than to edit my review but every other plant store in our area even Van Wilgens offers a 30 day return policy. Let alone being the most expensive Bark and Vine's return policy is whack. I did keep the plant but with the advice from the owner that the plant could be saved. Not only was he wrong about that I explained to him the plant had small white worms in it and his response was to say they were larve of fungus gnats and EAT ROOTS. Do your research next time you decide to sell people $425 plants read more

I wanted to like this shop more than I did. The plant selection is great. There's a wide variety of rare and common houseplants, price ranges, and sizes. The prices are fair, some plants priced a little high. The layout of the shop is fun to walk through. Where the shop fell short is on the staff. They were pompous and unfriendly. With so many plant shops in CT and in the New Haven area, it's unfortunate that the staff make shopping there an off-putting experience. read more

Addendum: as the owner responded and the store really seems to have a great selection. I tried again. This time I simply shopped by myself and found a great rosy calathea. Really a great selection of high light and low light plants. Mostly greens, pinks, and reds. Not great, but very reasonable prices. Somewhat disappointed that I also bought 5 x 1.5 inch terrarium pots that the staff didn't know the names of two of them. They tried hard to identify them and apologized for being unable to do so.
