I am a huge fan of Austrian food and wine and knew about this place a few years ago and, been meaning to try it since. As the online booking here is relatively full we decided to book weeks ahead and as it turned out, at least 3 tables were empty in a restaurant that seats about 30 people. I don't know if this is a deliberate strategy or, they had a few cancellations. I also confirmed after our visit last night that being in the top 2 restaurants in Munich on TripAdvisor also means nothing as, the food here was not worth it. For the money I can and have eaten in far better places in town. The menu here is 5 or 6 courses and the selection is very limited unless you organise it ahead of time. There was only 6 courses listed and that was it. The wine list is extensive and has mostly Austrian wine and some small selection of wines from Germany and Südtirol. But disappointing that the first two wines we selected were both out and the replacement recommendation was corked and had to open another one. I enjoyed the wines here. The table service is friendly and warm and there are a lot of staff to service the small restaurant. It was a ratio of 5 customers to one staff member. The food arrived and I must admit I was relatively unimpressed. The courses were small, the flavour on many of the dishes was ordinary and outside of the Spargel and Loup de mer I did not enjoy the other dishes as much. Those two dishes were great. The dessert was quite disappointing. Be prepared to spend a lot of money here compared to many restaurants in Munich and on average, the prices here are 2-3 times more than some of the decent places in town. For multi course menus they are also at the premium end of non starred restaurants. The ambience is very nice and simple and staff are friendly. I would not come back here again as, the value for money is lacking. If I compare it to other gourmet restaurants I have been to, this place has a long way to go. I would come back here for some decent Austrian wine but that's about it. Luckily they also have a wine shop attached to the restaurant. read more

We were invited to this incredible restaurant by a friend who promised it to be a memorable meal, and it surely was. This wonderful restaurant is right up there with my all time favorite place in Munich, Schweiger2 Showroom, for this category of restaurant. Broeding might even actually bump Schweiger out of its #1 spot in my palette now (at Broeding it's not necessary to let them know that you don't like pig's feet or blood sausage at the risk of them serving it). The food is top-notch, especially when accompanied by some of the delicious, Austrian wines they specialize in. Very professional and friendly service in a comfortable, cozy atmosphere. Courses like pumpkin soup with black walnuts (mmmmmm, kurbis soup season!), fish, and Reh (deer) served with green beans & mushrooms with a pretzel knödel maybe sound pretty common, but they are nothing less than extraordinary when they touch your tongue here. Maybe it's the wine coordinated with each course that makes the difference (wein begleitung is an additional 35-40€ depending on courses, but highly recommended- and you will learn quite a bit about each wine as it's served). After reading several newspaper reviews of Broeding, my wife and I decided to end our recent trip to Munich there. A wise decision. The evening was near perfect in every respect. My very limited German would have been no match for the complexity of ingredients and flavors in their six course tasting dinner, which both of us ordered, but the staff was incredibly gracious and accommodated our linguistic inadequacies. They were friendly, warm and informative, answering questions about the food and the wine. The food, which started with a "welcome" amuse-bouche of artichoke hearts, cured ham and pesto, was served over six courses of generous portions and included a small cheese course. The menu at Broeding changes daily, so no need to go into each dish. However, we found it refreshing that each dish was wholly unique: no unifying style or cuisine linked each course. For example, the third course was a swordfish filet served over roasted beetroot with a Thai Nam Prik sauce but the next course was a "traditional Austrian" dish of slowly cooked beef short rib and cheek. Two totally different courses, served one after the other but equally delicious. In each case, the ingredients were expertly arranged to build a delicious and complex dish. Ordering the accompanying wine pairing was also a wise decision as it permitted us to taste a variety of Austrian wines, which were all beautifully paired with each dish. The pairing started with a standard Gruner Veltliner but included an un-oaked Chardonnay that could stand with any Napa competitor and an incredible 2004 Blaufrankisch (Lemberger in Germany and elsewhere) that was unlike anything we'd had before (especially when compared to Finger Lakes Lembergers from New York). Though the small restaurant was completely full the evening we went, the space was still intimate and never felt loud or crowded or stuffy. L, A, and I had a great meal at Broeding in Munich. Schulstraße 9, 80634 München, Germany Phone:+49 89 164238 Overall: A+. This is not a flashy Michelin star restaurant, and that's ok because we weren't in the mood for one anyway. Instead we had solid, solid food (we loved every course which is unusual for us) in a downright nice setting. Those are the makings of a very memorable meal. Food: A. We had the standard 6 course pre-fixe tasting menu which is changed frequently and based on seasonal ingredients. Marinated veal tongue with braised chicory and salad. You generally expect tongue to be pretty rich, but this was nicely marinated, thinly sliced, and a fairly light early course, perhaps even lighter than a standard charcuterie. The greens were dressed nicely and enhanced the dish with a touch of bitterness. Cappuccino from beetroot. Served in a small cappuccino cup with a horseradish foam, this was clever and well executed. The foam on the top ensured that you had the right proportion of horseradish to beet in every sip. Very nice. Soothing. Codfish with artichokes and red Mojo. The Mojo was a red pepper sauce. the codfish was cooked perfectly, warm, moist, nice seasoning and the artichokes were firm and nicely flavored. The mojo, of course, brought the sweetness to each mouthful. Farmer chicken, pumpkin puree and chanterelles. The dark meat was prepared like fried chicken with the skin still on it and apparently fried. The white meat, always difficult to cook without drying, was moist and seasoned. The pumpkin puree had an orange juice reduction to add acid, and combined with the chicken, chanterelles, and leaks, it was a great mouthful. Cheese. This was a raw cow milk alpine cheese produced by Thomas Breckle. I had expected this to be like a Gruyere or Comte, but it was more like a cheddar. This was an exceptional piece of cheese. Yogurt mousse with stewed plums and apricots. This was a very nice dessert with a little bit of thin chocolate on the top. A nice way to end the meal. Wine: A+. The wine list is focused on Austrian, Swiss, and German wines, and sommelier Andreas Rohrich knows it inside and out. I know very little about Austrian wines, but certainly liked what he served us tonight (including the non-Austrian ones like the 2011 Majoros "Deak" Fumint Tokaji). It was a great experience and gave us a tour de force through the region. I have to say that I liked pretty much everything he served us with the highlights being the Riesling Brut Methode rurale Winery Bader Rhinehessen (a sparkling riesling served as an aperitif) and the 2008 baeder Fruhburgunder. Service: A+. Herr Rohrich and his team did a great job of being casual, yet precise. L and I were very pleased that the restaurant chooses to serve Munich tap water rather than the extremely expensive bottled water that is forced on you in most other restaurants. The joke in Munich is that the beer and wine are cheaper than the water (it's actually true). Herr Rohrich explained that he would rather people be able to drink a lot of water (so they don't become dehydrated while drinking wine) then to wake up feeling bad the next morning. That, and the fact, that bottled water is wasteful, make for a sound policy on the part of the restaurant. read more

I rarely feel compelled to write a review but this place was just too good not to shower with praise. Everything was top notch. Food, service, atmosphere (the only caveat being that it felt like the lighting was a bit harsh, would be nice if they turned down their overhead lights a bit. Very small issue relative to everything else). We had the five course tasting menu with a few surprises thrown in + the wine pairings. The menu ran the gamut in preparation and food variety. -Started with smoked goose breast and beats. Perfect palette cleanser to start the meal. -squid with ink and fennel salad - an absolutely delish baked cheese called Arunda (from a cow owned by Broeding!) with radioccio and an amazing sauce (my favorite dish of the night). The wine pairing for this dish was incredible. Rarely have I had a wine that felt so perfect for a specific dish. Both the flavors in the wine and the dish were elevated by each other. Magnifique! *Seeing how much we loved this dish the server actually gave us a second helping! That was a first for me. So awesome. - Char with Shitake and eggplant. Another supremely delicious course - Ox sous vide with stuffed zuchinni blossom and red peppers - Pear sorbet - Nougat-Mousse with pears (one of the best desserts I've had in recent memory) As extraordinary as the food was, the service may have been even better. With each pour of wine, our server (somalier?) told us the story of where the wine came from. It was fun chatting with him. He was very engaged and clearly very passionate about his work but not overbearing. The rest of the service was extremely professional and warm. It hit just the right balance of attentiveness without coddling. The bill of just over 200 euros (for 2) felt like a bargain based on the quality of the experience. During one of my family duty trips to Sofia I had a layover in Munich; I knew what comes next: bad food; bad hotel and everything else so I figured I have a nice dinner before I plunge into my Slav reality. This place was excellent. A decent cab ride from MUC; no reservation of course but it was a weekday and I was seated promptly. I have absolutely no German skills but no matter; they were perfectly equipped to accommodate any international traveler. The menu is excellent. I don't know much about German beer but believe it or not - they had Sierra? OMG I was floored but of course I didn't come 6k miles to drink my own beer. I asked for recommendation and I fell in love with the flight since my water suggested I try the Bavarian variety. I mean I could have ordered a pint of each but let's get to the food - excellent! The atmosphere reminded me of an ancient town inside the walls of a castle. The staff is very helpful. Their service was exemplary. They called me a cab and even suggested which route the driver should take to MUC so that we miss the early evening commute. I definitely recommend this place! read more

We had the German specialties prefixe menu Strudel with black pudding and quince with pea sprout, salad: really liked the blood strudel, it was well balanced and the FILO dough covering the blood pudding was a nice touch. Three stars Handmade pasta with truffle butter: over cooked pasta with too much salt and lots of butter with no truffle taste - this one was a disaster - 1 star Scallop saffron fennel and Frankfurt green sauce: scallop a little fishy and chewy and too well done. All the other accompaniments did not get together - 1 star Venison with couscous and shiitake: the main dish was real good. Venison here does not taste gamey, and the accompaniments seem to work very well. Couscous had too much curry powder not enough salt - 2.8 stars Cream cheese chestnut slice and persimmon: the chestnut and toffee base with fluffy cream cheese was very good. 4 stars The overall ambience, wine selection was good. My family of three dined at Broeding in October and experienced one of top three culinary events of our life. The atmosphere is simple and understated. The six course meal had perfect wine pairings, each carefully explained by our server. The chestnut soup was delicately sweet. The char with shard was light and flaky complemented well with the salt lemon sauce. Finally, the dessert cake with curd was masterfully presented, sweet, moist with a nice complement of apples and pears. There are too many superlatives to describe our experience at Broeding. I can only say: WOW. One of the best restaurant experiences in a long time in the "upscale" category. Service: Excellent. Wines: Extraordinary - had the wine pairing and each wine came with a story behind it. Food: simply fantastic. Was particularly impressed how basic ingredients were combined with experimental elements to create a fantastic balance of taste, texture and smell. On a recent visit, one course was a piece of a filet of a local no-thrills beef variety, but - as the cook explained - from a selected farmer who treats the animals well and the animals are allowed to roam on pastures. You could really see and taste the high quality of this meat. Tells you that skillful cooking starts with the selection of the ingredients. Also, the idea of having just one menu is refreshingly different. Who would think that you can satisfy customers that way (compare that to some restaurants that have a whole book for a menu and it takes you 20min to make up your mind). As mentioned by some other reviewers, don't worry if you have food allergies etc. They DO come up with alternatives in case you can't go with one of the courses. Will definitely come back when there is an appropriate occasion. By the way: this restaurant specialises in Austrian wines and all of the wines that they serve can be purchased in the adjacent wine store. read more
