We recently moved here from Minnesota and I have been wanting a Crepe Myrtle to plant in our yard. This place had a large selection and the prices were great!!!! It is a nursery you drive and the roads are bumpy fyi so be prepared. It is definitely worth it for the price. Beautiful trees and we will be back for more trees and things! Great selection of plants, trees at reasonable prices. We bought our Japanese maples from here and they are doing good. Also bought a variety of shrubs like azaleas, abelia, hydrangea, Althea, forsythia and others. The nursery inner roads are in a horrid shape so make sure to come in a high clearance truck. This nursery is awesome. The people, the plants... all exactly what I was hoping to find. This has become one of my favorite places to frequent. I moved into a house with the most barren yard and have been beautifying it for nearly a year, all with trees, plants and flowers from Broadwell's. The prices can't be beat and the quality is amazing. I think I've purchased 20 trees here, tons of grasses... you name it. All are flourishing. Broadwell's is not Lowe's or Home Depot. Broadwell's is not your standard operation nursery. It is a massive operation spanning tens upon tens of acres. The plants are probably 10-20% less pretty than what you'd find as fresh stock at a big box, but they are considerably cheaper. You have to know your plants. No one will be there to pat your hand or guide you to the perfect plant for your shady spot. If you're lucky, someone will be there to point you in the direction of your checklist. I got everything I needed to heavily landscape my front yard with Golden Mop False Cypress, Lorepatelums, Daylilly, Blue Rug Juniper, Rose of Sharon, etc. for a great price. I heard from several people about how affordable this nursery is. Well they were right! Beautiful plants, nice employees, I even saw their peacock! This is a wholesale nursery. So know what you're looking for and how to identify it. They can point you in the right directions, but you need to find it and load it into the car. Absolutely love this nursery. Im fortunate in that I am "relatively" close. The family is available to direct you toward the plants you're looking for or you can spend HOURS browsing. They are not a retail nursery -- so everything looks a little crazy -- but we have bought hydrangea, hosta and crepe myrtle from them and ALL have been incredibly healthy and transplanted well. Planted in the correct space in our yard (oops!) and they are now thriving. The prices are unbeatable -- especially if trying something new and you dont want your heart broken when a $50-$75 plant doesnt make it :) This nursery is worth the drive, quality, selection and price. I have made the hour drive from Raleigh to Broadwell's in Angier quite a lot after discovering from an avid-gardener friend of mine about 25 years ago, that such a place existed. I usually go first thing in the morning when they open. My most recent trip though was on a GORGEOUS Friday afternoon when I had a 1/2 day off work and my son was out of school, so we arrived around 2:45PM. After talking to Angie (who I later learned was one of the owners) at the front about where the Crepe Myrtles were located, we headed to the area she directed us to with our Jeep Cherokee. As my son and I were walking around looking for the tag Angie described for a Crepe Myrtle that does not get so tall, I kept hearing air sounds coming from the tall, irrigation pipes towering above our heads. I thought to myself, it's 3:00PM, surely they would not be watering the plants at this time of day with customers here. HOWEVER, as we continued to walk, the sounds coming from the pipes grew louder and louder and without a shadow of a doubt I knew we and the Jeep (with open doors and back) were getting ready to get DRENCHED! I yelled to my son, RUN THE WATER IS COMING! We both high-tailed it to the Jeep, hopped in and slammed the doors shut as the irrigation hit full-swing. I was piping mad and called their number, which of course got no answer, so I left a message of frustration telling them that we had driven an HOUR to get there asking if they could turn off the water. UGH! Rolling my eyes, I directed my son to go to another part of the property that was not being irrigated, to see what else we could find for his friend's prayer garden (Eagle Scout project) we were helping with the following day. Not finding what I was looking for, I drove back to the front and asked Angie where the Weeping Cherry trees were located and she told me they did not have any left. (I had called THAT day, before leaving Raleigh and her husband, Adam, told me they had them.) Anyway, while I was talking to Angie, Adam pulls up in his vehicle and she told him they did not have any Weeping Cherries left and asked him why he told me they did. He was certain they had some so drove ahead of me to show me where they were located. However, the spot where they were supposed to be, was empty. When I told Adam we needed three trees (smaller) for a prayer garden we were helping a Scout with, he drove ahead of us to show us where trees were located that would work. He was extremely helpful, so much so that I felt bad about and told him to ignore the voice mail I had left on their answering machine about the irrigation system. LOL. (The irrigation is on a timer so if you don't want to get wet, find out what time the irrigation comes on BEFORE you travel a long distance to get there. I have never had this issue when arriving early mornings.) POINTERS FOR A PLEASANT BROADWELL'S EXPERIENCE: 1) Do NOT EXPECT employees scattered around the property to help guide you. This is not a big-fluff nursery. On a beautiful Saturday, they will be crawling with customers and their vehicles. 2) Go with a lot of PATIENCE. Angie and Adam will get to you and they try very hard to help in the order of who was there first. If it is a crazy busy day, you HAVE to go in the right frame of mind and with PATIENCE. The number of staff available to help is very limited so if you need lots of help, go to a big-brand nursery. 3) Bring a LARGE VEHICLE and LIFTING HELP with you to help lift heavy pots. (I would not be able to lift the larger pots into our Jeep without help.) 4) KNOW what shrubs/trees you are going for, BEFORE you go. It is important to EDUCATE YOURSELF. Their plants are simply there in pots with NO INFORMATIONAL TAGS (no text/no pictures) for you to read or see what color they will be later or what light (full sun/shade) they thrive in. Tell them at the front what plant you are looking for and they will direct you to the area of the property where it is located. You are on your own after that. You will need to drive back to the front with any questions you have. 5) Be PREPARED to DRIVE DIRT ROADS (often uneven and bumpy) throughout the property to find what you are looking for. The property is not terrain for a sparkling Mercedes that you want to remain sparkling. Go with the proper vehicle that you can get dirty and wet. (Same goes for your clothing. Don't wear your Sunday best.) 6) DO EXPECT that whatever shrubs/plants you choose will be way less than what you expected to pay. (You can often get "three" for the price you would pay for "one" elsewhere.) 7) Go prepared to pay with CASH or CHECKS only. I have never had a shrub or tree I purchased at Broadwell's Nursery die on me and have been very pleased with everything I have purchased there over the years. Can I give it more stars? This isn't a typical nursery like the suburban garden center you're used to. This is acres and acres of plants. Like -- you tell them you want something and they point you to a pick up truck and tell you where on the property to go get them. Here's a good example: Needed about 18 blue rug junipers to fill in a front yard. They were $14- $18 at Lowes/HDepot - at Broadwells? $3 apiece! Spent $63 instead $400. They have trees and plants of all variety. Have been to Broadwells a bunch of times. It is a fantastic resource! Totally worth the 40 minute drive from Raleigh PS - There are 3 nurseries next to/across from each other at the same location. One has more flowers, the others more tree/shrubs/ the other lots of ornamentals, etc. No matter what you need...you're covered! read more

What this place has going for it is it's cheap. They are a wholesaler so you're not paying the upmarks you find at nurseries closer to the Triangle. For example, I got hostas for $3 each. A steal compared to places like Garden Supply. But this is not the sort of place to go if you don't know exactly what you're looking for. Selection is limited and items are often poorly marked. The workers can't help you much beyond telling you where on the property certain items are. Also you get what you pay for. Unlike the very well maintained hostas at Garden Supply, the ones I got at Broadwell's were filled with weeds. We had to dig through the piles of plants to find ones with the least weeds and I'll end up having to remove as much dirt as possible from the plants before planting to avoid introducing weeds to the garden bed. You'll also want to triple check that plants aren't root bound. TL;DR version: Great prices but not the place to go for window shopping. Be extra vigilant on which plants you choose to ensure good specimens. read more

I was a patron of Broadwells for decades. Definitely 5 stars on the prices; You have to know what you are going for, though, as the plants are not marked. I quit patronizing a few years ago, when I observed and confirmed from an employee, that they were throwing garbage and plastic pots into an incinerator and it was apparent that workers (and me at that moment) were being exposed to toxic fumes. A previous experience with the owner left me unimpressed with the attitude "You need me more than I need you." I always liked dealing with the Latinos, though. Very nice. Ultimately, I will not patronize such a flagrant polluter who cares so little about the environment or his employees. read more

The service is great and if you tell them what you need a day ahead they will have everything pulled/dug and ready for you to take to its happy new home. I purchased a new home 2 years ago and this has been my second trip to Broadwell's. This time I bought 30 junipers and some azaleas. These plants were gorgeous and very heavy and looked great. Can't wait to get them planted this weekend. I would of spent 2-3x's more if I got them at a big box nursery store such as Lowes or HomeDepot. It was worth the 55-minute drive from Durham. May have to go back one time before heat of summer comes. Excellent place and bring your walking shoes the facility is huge. read more

I purchased 12 Cyptomeria landscaping trees in May of this year. I followed the directions recommended to plant them. Within 30 days ten of the twelve started to show signs of dying. Two were just fine. I returned to Broadwell's and immediately told it was not their problem, too bad. I asked to talk the owner.....he told me it had to be the way I planted them and didn't want to hear anymore. I have planted several trees and never had a problem. I would tell anyone going there that they better beware. I know I will never return there. read more

I visited Broadwell's because I'd heard so much about it. They have a huge nursery. If you know what you want and can identify plants you are in business. They don't have a huge variety, but they do have a lot of the varieties they stock. But, nothing is labeled. They have hundreds of crepe myrtles, but nothing that says which tree is what color. We picked out camellias of a certain color only because they had blooms on them, no tags. Prices are low, but its a bit frustrating. Across the road is Stage Rd. Nursery, a whole different experience! Amazing variety, very knowledgeable owner (even answered my questions about what I had purchased at Broadwell's and excellent prices! Enjoyed my time here so much more. This will be my first (and likely, only) stop next time. read more
