This is a lovely place to visit on a summers day. The lily…read moreponds are man made and were formed after three limestone valleys were capped and filled in with water in the late 18th -early 19th centuries. It is now a protected nature reserve where wildlife thrive. Otters, dragonflies, water birds, and a huge array of fishlife are found here. Fishing is permitted with a permit. You park at the far end(National Trust) and take a pleasant long walk along one side of the ponds, eventually coming out onto a large sandy beach with very few people around, or you can go up on to the cliffs were the coastwalk is and go off that way. On the way back you cross a small bridge across the ponds where you can stand and watch the fish etc. Careful we small kids as there is a handrail only on one side - though it's not very deep. We spent a good few hours here when our sonn was born - that was a while ago so we're overdue a visit here. You won't be disappointed if you like a quiet relaxing stroll and to get away from the crowds though I've never been in high season).

It's a great place to spend an afternoon, especially on a sunny day. The marina is surrounded by shops, restaurants and galleries which are very enticing. You can buy local paintings, sailing photographs or various arts and crafts. Milford Haven is the largest town in Pembrokeshire and situated at the mouth of the River Cleddau. According to legend, in 1802 when he visited, Admiral Lord Nelson was so impressed that he declared Milford Haven one of the 'great harbours of the world'. The annual Pembrokeshire Fish Week is held at the end of June each year on the quayside.

This strangely costs more, however, vouchers are provided to cover the additional cost, which can be spent in the gardens (food and shops) on the day of ticket purchase. The dome is particularly impressive, when viewed on the inside from the Northern Entrance and the gardens sublime. The only thing that let the day down was that in spite of the gardens being open until 6pm, on arrival at the shop / garden centre at the entrance with vouchers to spend, the whole place was closed at 5:30! Shame on you!

I enjoyed the various greenhouses and especially the large dome - perfect if it's raining as there's a lot to see inside. A nice gift shop too. I also liked the local school children's own garden. We found the cafes disappointing unfortunately. The self-service one was unpleasantly crowded and with such a long queue, and very little choice of vegetarian food - certainly nothing vegan. There was even less in the tiny cafe inside the dome. I think we'll take a picnic next time and just buy coffees. Apart from the food (from our point of view at least) definitely a lovely place to visit.
