Hemphill's Dock - Taking my perfectly steamed crabs for a ride. ;-)

"Baby Ruths and Blue Crabs: a Maryland treasure"…read more Tucked just off the beaten path in southern Maryland sits a true hidden gem of a crab shack -- the kind of place where GPS starts to doubt itself but your nose knows you're close when you catch that glorious whiff of Old Bay and salt air. I ordered several dozen male blue crabs, and the gentleman running the shop steamed them fresh while I waited. He couldn't have been kinder or more helpful -- walking my Yankee self through the local crab routine like a patient professor of Maryland seafood. I even picked up paper and mallets for future crab feasts, because once you start cracking shells, there's no going back. The crabs came out piping hot, juicy, and unbelievably sweet -- some of the best I've ever had, maybe the best. They were just as delicious cold later on, and I had plenty to share (though sharing was optional). The fresh air off the water, the sunshine, and the friendly folks waiting on their own orders made the whole experience feel like a snapshot of authentic coastal life. Before I left, I remembered I had a stash of Baby Ruth candy bars in my trunk -- so naturally, I handed a few out to the kind man steaming the crabs and some fellow customers waiting for their orders. Nothing says "Southern hospitality meets Northern charm" quite like fresh crabs and surprise candy. This isn't a sit-down spot -- it's a genuine crab-to-go shack, and that's exactly its charm. Bring your own cooler if you plan to take a bunch home, because you'll absolutely want to. No frills, no fuss -- just pure Maryland magic by the dozen.

It was a bit of a trip to get there so just give yourself time. We usually go to OCMD late August so it's less crowded, which we love. This was a large crab house that what we're used to in OCMD. The prices here were lower for the AYCE crabs so we were pumped. The crabs were a decent size for the AYCE and you can ask for butter and vinegar. My sister, mom and myself all did the AYCE crabs so they came out 12-13 at a time initially then went down to 8-10. You definitely have to ask for more and they're not as proactive as other places but the food was definitely delicious. I would recommend the trip!

I don't know where to start about this place. Being the "sister" restaurant to the Shrimp boat, I…read morehad expectations. Not high ones, just good food ones. Sadly, they weren't met, not even close. First- they use imported crab meat. The crab meat itself smelled very fishy. They tasted like Indonesian crab meat, which has a particular taste. I can say without a doubt, this crab meat was not from the US. This could have been covered up a bit with a good recipe, but the crabcake itself just tasted bad. Stuffed fish was equally as bad. Very fishy, obviously frozen fish and cheap crab. I cook frozen flounder at home all the time, this was just that. Frozen flounder poorly executed. For $31, it was a complete rip off. Not to mention, the frozen green beans came to the table, STILL FROZEN!!! Legit first one I picked up was cold and hard. ‍ How? The fried shrimp were the only thing worth eating. Not butterflied or cleaned, just simply shelled and battered. Sometimes that's all you need. Coleslaw was OK. Nothing special. Fries, ehh. Not many places in OC do good fries. Hand cut are the only way unless you eat tots. Overall- Crabcakes 1/10 Stuffed flounder 1/10 Green beans.... 1/10 Cole slaw 4/10 Fries 4/10 Fried shrimp 7/10 Service 5/10 This place is a total pass. It's a shame they are associated with the shrimp boat which we've had much better food at.

It's a very simple storefront - some fresh produce outside, right by the parking area, and then just an open façade for walking in to purchase the seafood. It's a bit tight inside, but the folks are friendly and welcoming and there was never really much of a line to order seafood. If you want crabs, order ahead of time so you can tell them exactly when you're going to want them ready. When I arrived to pick up my dozen male crabs, they were steaming hot. They were reasonably priced. Some of the seafood is super local, others they get from the mainland. I opted for some Chincoteague oysters which were so deliciously briny and fresh. The crabs were also locally and recently caught. Sometimes you gotta be ready to buy what's been caught, you know? That being said, I also enjoyed our rockfish that they had purchase for selling. Maybe next time I'll get some of the clams too. While the main draw is the local fresh seafood, they do sell a few other items like local hot sauces, seasonings, and even equipment like crab mallets and oyster knives (which was good, because my rental property didn't have one and I didn't want to shell out $20 extra to have my oysters pre-shucked). Next time I'm staying on Chincoteague, I will be ordering from Ricky's. Highly recommended!
