I wasn't at the first Tasting Society event, but this second one featured Books & Brews, Taxman Brewing Company, Sanctuary, and J & J Winery. Sanctuary is an up-and-coming brewery and will donate a percentage of their sales to animal sanctuaries- pretty cool! The cups they used had a hole on the bottom with a magnet over it, and then they would push the cup down on a button and the cup would fill from the bottom up. It was fascinating. I tried the "Honey Badger" beer and it was light and summer-y. Books & Brews had some of the coolest beers on tap that I've ever heard of. There was one called "Bertie Bots" where they had added candy to their brew and it was incredible. I know what you're thinking... It sounds weird. But no, it came out as a light, sweet beer and I loved it. They also just released the "Poo-Tee-Wheat" with apricot wheat, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries. SUMMER IN A GLASS. There was also a syrup beer and a 9.6% bacon-infused imperial stout that was revealed later in the evening. The owner was awesome to talk to and enthusiastically told about some of the crazy concoctions he has made. We also learned that Books & Brews holds movie nights once a week and releases a new brew once a week as well. The place also has games and used books and therefore would be a great place to hang out. I didn't get to talk to Taxman Brewery or J & J Winery as much, but I did also enjoy their options. I tried a Blood Orange wine at J & J which was very sweet and unlike anything I'd had before. Definitely enjoyed all the unique options at Tasting Society. There was also the "Scratch" food truck which had a variety of food, live music, and an art display that really added to the event atmosphere. Everyone was super friendly and my friends and I ended up meeting a lot of cool people. We will definitely be back at the next one. $12 was a deal considering how many drinks we got.

All programs and services are offered free of charge. Started in 1987 with a meeting in the living room of co-founders Chris Gonzalez and Jeff Werner, IYG (which was initially known as Indianapolis Youth Group) has always sought to provide a safe space for LGBTQ+ youth to build self-confidence, explore individualism, and develop safe relationships. As an organization, they've always pursued being a space of acceptance, equity, and restorative practices. Just following the history of IYG is a powerful example of the journey taken by so many individuals identifying as LGBTQ+. From that initial meeting in a living room, they would eventually find an office on the northeast side of Indy (not far from my home) where for years they existed discreetly with little to no external identifiers of their existence on the building. Eventually, and slowly, they would become more identifiable as society began to change and as Indy started to value their presence. Having outgrown that space, they had the opportunity to acquire a building at 3733 N. Meridian Street and now have an absolutely beautiful space where they can serve a wide array of individuals and needs. I've done fundraising for them a couple times and organizationally had some frustrations, though there's no denying their profound impact on Indiana's LGBTQ+ youth population. Specific supports include GSA, schools, in-house tutoring/homework assistance, college prep/application assistance, Independent Life Skills (ILS), and other educational programs, email our Executive Director. For information about volunteering. They also have food donations and donation needs, corporate/organizational LGBTQ+ cultural competency training (I've taken it - amazing, insightful, and very well led), and very tangle supports for LGBTQ+ youth including case management services. While I had some organizational frustrations, I wouldn't hesitate to refer a youth to their programs and as someone who has worked in social justice most of my life I couldn't begin to count the number of youths and young adults I know who have found safety and acceptance from IYG.

Their services are absolutely necessary to so many youth that have been disowned, harassed, kicked out, bullied, and more by their family, friends, classmates, and more. They provide a safe haven and space for youth to just be themselves. They recently moved into a new building on North Meridian and the new building is gorgeous (at least from the outside). They are a driving force for equality among the LGBTQ+ community and they are invaluable to the Indy community. Thank you for all you do IYG!

I wrote to Downtown Indy asking them to create outreach programs that improve safety and consideration towards tourists, but they don't care. The entire crew of Downtown Indy pretend to care about people but are only selfishly interested in promoting their nonprofit organization. Downtown Indy may now call itself Downtown Indy Alliance. Downtown Indy doesn't have any oversight or accountability. Either way, this organization is insensitive towards ordinary people. The president of Downtown Indy , Taylor never made any effort to answer me besides an automated email which mentioned "she was out of town". Nobody within Downtown Indy or most of its Board of Directors made any effort to contact me. After one year of waiting, I got a short email from someone on the board of directors from Downtown Indy, who mentioned they will bring attention to my concerns! The whole process of communicating with Downtown Indy is inadequate. Often, nobody answers the phones at Downtown Indy. Downtown Indy is an insincere nonprofit organization. Downtown Indy has done an awful job of helping visitors to downtown Indianapolis. None of their security teams were even outside the night I got mugged around the corner from Downtown Indy. The streets were all dark, whatever improvements the Downtown Indy organization claims to have brought about to their city were not noticeable. To make matters worse, I had been mugged on the first night of Indy 500, the most important event in Indianapolis. Awful Service! Awful Quality! Awful Value! Avoid Downtown Indy HQ and its area! Downtown Indy is both inconsiderate and unhelpful. Downtown Indy or Downtown Indy Alliance under their "rebrand" is still insincere and apathetic towards ordinary citizens. Crime in downtown Indianapolis is a topic which Downtown Indy hasn't resolved. Downtown Indy has no real motivation to resolve the problems of downtown Indianapolis. It was my first time in both the state of Indiana and the city of Indianapolis, I was booked to stay at the hotel across the street from Downtown Indy HQ. The hotel tried to pull a bait and switch on my room rates. I argued with the clerk who then threatened me with security. I ran out of the hotel in fear. I got mugged around the corner from Downtown Indy headquarters. One of the upper level crew at Downtown Indy works for Yelp. I fear that there is a potential conflict of interest concerning Yelpers posting positive reviews towards Downtown Indy. Yelpers may feel obliged to post positive reviews of Downtown Indy only because they know upper management is a Yelper too. NOTICE: they just changed their name to Downtown Indy Alliance, it's the same arrogant and pretentious organization filled with hypocrisy! I repeated this message twice because getting mugged around the corner from Downtown Indy Alliance and getting ignored traumatized me, especially since they posted annoying YouTube videos a few months afterwards which mention that they want "public feedback". Everything I have mentioned about my mugging near Downtown Indy Alliance really happened. Secondly, after we were seated, we waited about 15 minutes before realizing that table service wasn't offered. It would have been helpful if this had been communicated upfront. Third, when we went to the bar to order wings and fries, the wait time was roughly 50 minutes. My food was then handed to the wrong customer, and I had to retrieve it myself. Fortunately, the customer--who appeared to be very intoxicated--recognized the mistake and sat back down. When I finally received my order, it was packaged in a sealed foam container with no ventilation, which caused the steam from the wings to make the fries soggy. Overall, I won't be returning. The lack of basic customer service and attention to proper food handling made this a very disappointing experience.

As a longtime wheelchair user myself, I'm acutely aware of just how inaccessible life can be. I'm fortunate. I'm still very able to live an active life despite a myriad of health issues. I'm very aware that others aren't quite so fortunate. SAWs is an Indianapolis-based non-profit faith-based organization dedicated to "providing freedom to people with permanent disabilities in low-income households through the construction of wheelchair ramps." The ramps always meet ADA requirements and very often are the difference between someone being able to access the community and being stuck at home. In case you're unaware, wheelchair ramps, or at least properly constructed wheelchair ramps, aren't always easy and are frequently unaffordable for those on a limited or fixed income. While there's occasionally government funding to assist, for example my own ramp at my home came via Vocational Rehabilitation, very often these programs are limited, have long waiting lists, and/or have strict qualifying guidelines. A program like Servants at Work, which is entirely devoted to building ramps, makes all the difference in the world. These are good people doing amazing things. I was familiar with SAWs long before I joined my current church, Second Presbyterian Church, a longtime sponsor and one of the groups involved in the founding of SAWs. SAWs has built ramps for more than one of my friends. They largely use volunteer crews, often from area faith communities, and the work always meets ADA guidelines. While teams are often faith-based, it's certainly not an absolute with organizations such as Elevance Health, Erie Insurance, Old National Bank, Rehab Medical, Subaru, and Salesforce all getting involved. Getting involved is usually a combination of financial support and actually working on the ramps. SAWs has now grown to the point of having hubs statewide and even affiliates in Virginia, Arizona, and Nevada. Rik Hagarty, a Second Presbyterian Church member, founded SAWs and it remains a lean organization with four paid staff (Executive Director, Program Development Manager, Accountant, and Operations Manager). Otherwise, everything happens because of the sponsors and volunteers. This is an amazing group doing amazing work for individuals with disabilities by helping to ensure they can live life as independently as possible and that they have better access to their community. In 2021, SAWs celebrated their 3,000th ramp build!
