Congratulations are in order! The Bull's Head has made it into the Good Pub Guide published by…read moreCAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale, friend of my locals the Crescent, New Oxford and King's Arms). Many say that this pub would get a lot more custom if it wasn't on the 'wrong side' of Piccadilly Station as it were. However this does mean that it gets a nice eclectic clientele, including office suits at lunchtime which often suggests quality food (smart types are picky about their food, I've met plenty of them). The food itself is your hearty, tasty pub grub from upmarket peppery steak pies and gammon and eggs to sirloin steaks and corned beef hash. The chips are particularly nice. The beers include the Marston's standard Burton, Pedigree and specials like Long Hop, as well as many festival ales such as Everard's, Brains and Ringwood's. Down to earth, upbeat and friendly staff serve the pub's varied customers, creating a jovial and relaxed atmosphere. Certainly a worthy addition to the guide.

We were forced to wet our whistle elsewhere, and a quick check on the app showed that The Bulls Head was the nearest,so head there we did. It is always nice to go into a pub that has a good mix of clientel, and this was one of them,a smattering of regular looking folk? Check,a few suit and ties having a swift one after work? Check, and on this particular evening 2 Metalheads after a nice drop of ale. We both had a pint of Boon Doggle on draft (They have a really good selection),which went down a treat,as did the pub itself,it is a really nice place that I will certainly go back too the next time that i'm not able to get my drink on before a gig.. Good stuff

The food arrived piping hot and I swear there was half a cow on my plate - just so much meat! AND absolutely lashings of gravy - its like they knew the way into my heart yet again! Plenty of creamy mash, roast potatoes and all the trimmings including cauliflower cheese cooked to perfection although personally I would have liked a little more cheese but I'm a greedy guts. And lastly, the Yorkshire... large, crispy, gravy sodden perfection. I wanted a roast. I got a great one. And since I've last been they've renovated the garden area. There's now a huge outdoor seating area with cute gargoyles on the wall and heated booths. It's just lovely! Horton Arms, you really have stole both my families and my heart! Long may it continue.

I was staying at the Premier Inn at Clayton Greene, and was looking for a good dinner. I set off on…read morefoot and first stopped at the Rifle Range Pub near the hotel. Once I stepped in though, to the stares of the "regulars", I immediately found out that they do not serve food. But a couple of kind patrons engaged me and offered a suggestion: the Horton Arms. One of them was obviously very fond of the food there, and that was about all I needed to decide to try them. So I walked there -- and it's a good ways by foot, but then I'm after some good food... Unfortunately, they had finished serving dinner by the time I arrived, about 19:45 (7:45pm). That seems a bit early to me, but what could I do? Answer: return the next evening. So the next evening I arrived in time, and was quickly seated. I perused the menu, which had my usual favorites like Fish and Chips, and Steak and Ale Pie. But there was something on the menu which I'd never had, and it really piqued my curiosity -- a cheese and onion pie. "That can't be all there is," I thought; that's like ALL cheese... isn't that too much cheese?? But British Pubs generally do pie crust so well you could put damn near anything inside it and it would be really lovely. So I was a bit torn. The waitress arrived. I was explaining to her how I was trying to decide amongst my options, the cheese and onion pie being one of them, when she told me that the c&o pie was really nice... and that's all it took. When else will I have the chance to try this? -- and from a highly recommended pub too. Decided. The result? OMG! That was so good! See the accompanying picture I took. Just incredible. And the cheese was not overpowering. Now where am I going to find THAT over here (U.S.) when I crave it?? Especially in Minnesota!? (Probably nowhere...) Looking at all the different dishes that went by me while I was waiting for my slice of deliciousness, I can pretty well bet that anything you order here will be a delight. Yes, I recommend you try this place. It is now a destination for me every time I am in the Oldham area.
