First of all, I am not one to complain. In fact, I have never written on Yelp before - good or bad…read more- but I do feel like I should "give a heads up" to parents who are looking to put their kids in karate, specifically Osuna Karate Calgary. I signed my 6 year old up for karate at Osuna but am disappointed with how they handle their classes and scheduling. 1) This karate company rents a gym from a school so if the school has an event on the weekend then there is no karate - and they do not give you more then a weeks notice if this is the case. For the month of April for instance, there are 4 Saturdays, 2 of which there is no class because of a school event and Easter and on the last Saturday there is a karate tournament the kids can attend, at a totally different location, if they would like. The first Saturday in April was taught by students of the main teacher/owner? 2) The class size is way to big. They call 4-6 year olds 'Little Tigers' and you would think they would cap the size of the class so that they could make sure every student was actually learning what was being taught but they do not. There are 20-30 kids in the class, if not more. 3) The main teacher/owner is great (his full time gig is marketing somewhere so the website is really well laid out and its SEO is high - go figure) and this is who you think will be teaching your child but by mid year you are getting his students and what ends up happening is these younger people just play karate games for the majority of the class with the kids instead of teaching them positioning, kicks or punches etc. OR they start the class late? I am all for karate games but not for the full 45 minute class. 4) It also seems a bit sneaky - I don't know, maybe previous parents have decided not to keep their child/children in the program after all of the cancelled Saturdays and lack of professional teaching - but at the beginning of the year you are required to pay for the first and last month (Sept. and June) classes and you are required to give one month notice if you want to remove your child from the program. I find this very odd that they require one months notice but don't give the same curtsey to parents in regard to letting them know when there is a cancelled class? AND it's almost like they are stealing the June money because if you decide to cancel and do give one months notice you do not get your June money back? Trust me, I asked. Anyway, so as nice as the owner and his wife is - and they really are - I will not be registering my daughter in their karate program next year and will not refer this program to other parents.
