BEWARE - TOYOTA BRIGHTON
I am not sure about the criteria used by Toyota to award dealers with a 5 star dealership status. However, hope that Toyota would re-consider their decision by investigating Toyota Brighton's fraudulent operations. Detailed our experience below: A year ago my husband went to Toyota Brighton to book a car as a gift to me for our wedding. At this stage, my husband was asked to pay a deposit of $1 000 and was told our finance would come through. Also, was told that the deposit would be returned if the same did not come through. After stating the same they asked him to quickly sign a few documents. After the wedding when my husband went to Toyota Brighton they stated that all the documents were in place however, since he did not have a Victorian driving license they cannot proceed with the sale. My husband went the following week to obtain his learner's permit and then went back to the dealership. Please note that we lived at Pakenham and went to Toyota Brighton based on their 5 star dealership status. Given that this was our first car, we hoped to get better guidance from a 5 star dealer. After all the effort put in my husband was told that we had too many credit cards and our finance cannot be processed. At that stage, we asked for our deposit back. We were told that the deposit would be refunded a year later as a part of their policy. Given that we were unaware of the legal norms in the country and were going through a rough patch we told them we would return a year later.
A year later we found that our finances had improved and went back to Toyota Brighton to get our deposit back as well as explore any opportunities to buy a car. As soon as the manager knew we had come to get our deposit back he said he was very busy. Also, the sales people humiliated us and refused to show us any cars saying that finance is important to get a car. We kept explaining that our situation had changed. We were asked to leave and call back on a different date. While we called back we were advised that the deposit will not be returned and they dont need to return it to us. We escalated it to the General Manager. The General Manager intervened and said he would get us a good deal and the deposit can be adjusted against the new purchase. We agreed and went back to the dealership. We spent time to select the car etc and then were told that our finance cannot go through as a learner's permit is no more sufficient to get finance. We asked the General Manager to return the deposit. He said even if I can I will only return some part of it so that you would come back to buy from Toyota. He also said that he will give us an interest of 1% on the deposit when we come back. We tried explaining to him that we cannot afford a Toyota. He did not relent. We then went and got a personal loan to get a car.
We tried contacting the General Manager a few times after we got the personal loan sanctioned to help us find a used car within our budget. However, by then his attitude had changed. We finally again went back to the dealership after fixing an appointment. When we went we were asked to walk around and see whichever car we wanted without any sales man helping us. They kept trying to push more expensive and damaged cars to us although we explained that it was not our budget. Finally the General Manager said that we should wait till we had the money to buy a car from Toyota Brighton as he would not return the deposit to us.
Overall, Toyota Brighton is a very sly dealership which works with an intent to manipulate and cheat customers putting immense pressure on customers to stretch beyond their budget. Those visiting Toyota Brighton please ensure that you read every piece of document, get everything in writing, the sales people will make every effort to hurry you to make a decision and overlook details and use that squeeze money and energy out of you. Please be careful. read more
