Friendly, helpful and attentive service, but not overbearing. The food is top notch in terms of imagination, preparation and presentation. Most of the guests are older folks, so it is very quiet. Having said that, for those looking for a romantic getaway in south west Scotland, look no further, this is THE place for you. If the weather cooperates, there is great hiking on the sea cliffs nearby.

There are mixed reviews about the rooms and the food on other sites but for a pub stop it's definitely worth the visit. Oh, and right behind the pub is the start of one of the area's best walks up to Moss Eccles Tarn and beyond.

Positives: 1. They have a guard at the front entrance, to…read morescreen cars pulling in, before they open the gate. This is very important and many should do that! 2. The lights & spaces to put your toiletries in the bathroom, excellent! 3. Full-length mirror in the wardrobe cabinet, sometimes I forget there's one there. 4. Bed covers & pillows very comfortable. 5. The lights were all in the right places. 6. Going outside, to our room, in and out of a door and another door, is a perfect excuse to admire the beautiful fountains & gardens, and take photos. 7. Great decor, love the furniture, I'd like to sit on each one, relax, read a book &/or watch the ships! But here's a couple negatives: 1. The toilet. You have to flush it 2-3 times or hold it down the 2nd time to flush it 100%. 2. There are not enough electrical plug for your phone, electric toothbrush, hair dryer, water pick (I have to use the one in the living room, towel under an ice bucket for my rinse, on the table, and you only have enough time for the bottom of your teeth, before it stops). This is not negative nor positive: First day, I wasn't sure which side of our room is to the marina, but after the 1st day, you basically know your way around.

Exhausted from a day's trekking up and down the hills and ghylls, it didn't really matter to us where we went - anything but a tent would do! However, the Low Wood Bay was a little bit of luxury and even our foggy brains appreciated the surroundings. Now, the view is simply spectacular. Windermere is right on your doorstep, all blue and glistening in the sun (not always provided but always appreciated!) - if you're lucky, you can get a room with this view. One party member ended up with a claw foot bath looking directly out onto this view. Inside, everything feels grand, if a touch dated, especially compared to the clean lines of city centre Manchester most of us are used to. Check in was quick and easy; due to the number of us, they laid out our room reservations in individual envelopes, meaning we didn't end up flooding the lobby or them having to print off each piece of paper in real time. I accidentally left my bag in said lobby - once I'd reached our room and realised, I rang down to reception and they quickly ran it up to the room for me. Service! The room itself was a decent size, with 2 single beds, chairs, TV, dressing table and well-sized bathroom. The beds were super comfy, with at least 2 layers of extra padding, and it suited us well. We partied the night away in an event space upstairs and away from the general masses - bar and waiting staff were attentive, and noone seemed to mind the noise we bought to proceedings! The next morning we were signed up to breakfast in the restaurant. It was SO good. Buffet continental and hot breakfast, we all filled up on full breakfasts and juice. The potato option was my favourite - potato cakes - as it's so rare to find them outside of your Tesco bakery aisle. Yum. Out of my personal price range, but for a little bit of luxury in the Lakes, this is the place to go.

The room was clean and homely with plenty of supplies such as selection of teas, coffee and a cookie. I had a lovely view on the mountain, which is a nice bonus. Couldn't open the window though. This was the first stop of my birthday weekend planned by my girlfriend and we were here for the afternoon tea. The offerings of the tea itself were great, a nice selection of sandwiches, scones and cakes all with a huge pot of English tea! Now, the views - they are spectacular and you probably can't beat these views to sit and enjoy a drink on the balcony! We had a good 30 minutes outside but then the wasps attacked and we had to go back in to sit on the extremely comfy sofas! I can't speak for the hotel itself in regards to rooms - but for a traditional, enjoyable and good value afternoon tea - Beech Hill is a good bet!

The menu didn't offer anything out of the ordinary, and I opted for the Shepherds Burger with cheese, which was refreshingly nice. The beef was sourced locally, and the cheese was not the run of the mill cheddar that is often plonked on top. The beef was succulent and disitinctly fresh. The normal additions came with the burger, such as, chips, coleslaw, and a bit of salad. All tasted very nice. Overall, the meal was very filling and tasty, but the price range exceeds the quality. Unfortunately, the selection of beverages is very limited. If you are nearby, then it is worth a visit.

The hotel was clean, warm and the staff were welcoming. There was also complimentary water and molten brown toiletries which was nice, a pool, steam room and spa. The room also gives a hair dryer, coffee and tea making facilities, mini fridge and robes. However, we found that for such an expensive hotel it lacked the bare minimum that any 2 or 3 star should have; the wifi was very bad, it was so slow that not even Netflix would play properly. The hotel said Netflix would already be logged in, however it wasn't and we had to ring for the password but when we logged in, it said there were too many users on the hotel account. Breakfast was poor, there was hardly anything on the buffet besides bread, fruit and cereals. There wasn't anything continental though, and the menu was limited to just four things. I asked for boiled eggs and smoked salmon and I just got one boiled egg... I would have at least expected two. It was comparable to a 3 star London hotel breakfast. Although the room, decor, atmosphere, staff and facilities were lovely, the bare basics of proper wifi in this day and age and a nice breakfast were lacking for such an otherwise nice hotel. It had potential, but lacked in essentials making me only give it 3 stars, especially for the price where these are expected.
