Everything went very smoothly, as these people do weddings day in and day out! We opted for a package deal to cut down on planning hassle. It worked out very well - the hotel took care of all the details for us and made sure everything went smoothly. The gardens of the hotel are TO DIE FOR and absolutely gorgeous. Going up to Scotland to get married here was worth it just to have our pictures (and ceremony!) conducted outdoors in the beautiful hotel gardens. They are small but colourful and well-presented. I love the natural look, so it was just perfect. The food at our reception was equally delicious and first-rate. I had the best tomato soup I've ever had for our starter, and the portion of lamb was GIGANTIC - made it hard not to pop the seams of my wedding dress!! The only thing stopping this hotel from getting a 5 rating is some of the staff. No one was ever UNfriendly, but they could definitely work on being more forthcoming with information and more pleasant at the reception. Whenever I asked questions, the receptionist (not the same one either - all of them except one) always had the attitude that I was inconveniencing her greatly. Also, the rooms are a BIT outdated (though perfect comfortable with all mod cons - I just mean the decor) and the advertised spa bath was just a tiny bathtub with jets! However, there is a lovely pool & spa for guest use - 25m pool, large jacuzzi, steam room and sauna - very nice.

Our room over looked the bar below, and came with a double bed and a small but functional bathroom. Though if I'd been any larger a person it would not have been navigable for my rear. The breakfast in the morning (Not included) was delightful, I tried haggis for the first time and not only did I survive, but it was tasty. The service in the bar/cafe was quite deligtful, both in the morning and in the evening.

Immediately on arrival we were shown to our comfortable room and then offered tea and biscuits in the sitting-room downstairs (this is a nice touch in any B&B because all provide tea/coffee supplies in the bedrooms but after a hard day of walking it's actually really nice to just be able to plop into a comfortable chair and have someone bring you a cup and a plate of cookies! For supper we had a choice of home cooked food which was both delicious and very good value. I particularly appreciated the choice of vegetarian dishes. After an excellent breakfast, our host drove us back to where we had left off the trail the day before.

We were very happy that the Golden Fleece still had a room. Our happiness turned to joy when we saw the lovely room. Light and airy, with a great view and huge bathroom. We were even more pleased when we went down to dinner! British cuisine has soared in the last few decades, even in out of the way Inns. The menu was varied and everything we had was exceptionally good. The wine list was small but complete. We chose a bottle of excellent Latour Pinot Noir. We were treated to a delicious starter of lamb sausage in a mustard glaze and hummus. My wife ordered a cheese soufle as well. We were impressed by the quality and subtle tastes. You couldn't get better anywhere. For our mains, I had the roast lamb and my wife had a fillet of hake with spring potatoes. Both were delicious. After dinner, we moved out to the cozy bar lounge to read and finish our wine, then I capped the evening with a dessert called "poor knight's pudding". Made using a croissant and vanilla custard, served a la mode. Lovely room, great restaurant, friendly staff. Couldn't ask formore!

This deliciously baked bread was also brought to our table and soon after came the food! Everything was impeccable from the burgers and fish to the soups and salads everyone was impressed and very satisfied. If I could return I most definitely would. They even so far as to find an ice pack for my swollen ankle! We stayed in a first floor room in the adjoining building (not the main house) that had just recently been remodeled. The room was plainly decorated, but the bed was comfortable and the room was a decent size. My chief complaint about the room was the temperature - it was quite chilly! The bathroom in particular, with a window leading to the outside and tile floors, was a bit frigid. We asked the owners to turn up the heat, but were told that the system was automatic. We had been told that we could have dinner on the property, as there are so few places to eat in Lanercost, however, when we phoned the owner 24 hours in advance to request the meal, we were told that on Fridays he simply sent guests to the Lanercost Priory tea room down the street. We decided to drive to nearby Brampton for dinner instead, although it was 20 minutes away. Breakfast at Abbey Bridge was pleasant and gave us enough fuel to tackle the next day's walking - adequate.

My room was a small en suite meant for a single, with a small but perfectly functional bathroom. The bed was comfortable. There was virtually no traffic outside at night, resulting in a great night's sleep. The shower enclosure was small, but the water was nice and hot. Breakfast, cooked by the host, is served at a variety of times. There are various choices for breakfast, and everything tasted great. Dinner is also available if arranged in advance, and served at 7. It is chef's choice. If you choose this option, going by my own experience, you will not be disappointed. If hiking the trail or touring the Abbey, this is a great choice for a night's rest.

I'm reluctant to say exactly how they helped us in case everyone comes to expect the same - but suffice to say these people are wonderful. According to locals we met, they've turned around a business that was downright hostile to outsiders and made it into a haven for good food, good company, and good manners - an experience that's all too rare these days. Their balance between upmarket dining (with an excellent chef), and cosy fireside inn has been wonderfully achieved. They deserve the highest recommendation.

Tonight, 7 of is chose the Steak pie. The reason? Its so good! The gray is rich and unctous, the beef lean and tender. The puff pasty crust is just that good. While we are sad to see Tommy go, we look forward to many more delicious meals together as a family. The service was absolutely epic! Such graat servers.
