Dr. Mulahu is by far one of the best, if not BEST, dentist I've ever had! I've been in and out of…read morevarious dentists for both cleaning and a cracked tooth, and I never felt this much care from a dental practice. First of all, Dr. Mulahu really spends time listening to the problem, spends time carefully explaining what she suspects is the root cause, then lists the various treatments and strategies she plans on effecting, so that you are with her throughout the whole process. She truly was amazing. But bedside manners aside, when it comes to the actual treatment, I also can't say enough positive things about her care. I cracked a tooth which has caused me a lot of pain over the past two years. I went to three (yes, 3!) dentists who have looked at the filling, tried to assess the problem, or fix the bite post filling, and have never felt great. After several rounds of visits with the other dentists, I gave up on my tooth and toothaches. Fast forward to Dr. Mulahu. She suggested I put in a temporary filling (even though it was double the work for her and no extra cost to me) to make sure my nerve endings were healthy. After giving my tooth a few weeks to recuperate, she worked on the filling. And yes, for those of you who've had fillings, it's a tiresome process getting the bite right. With Dr. Mulahu's finesse not only did the bite feel almost PERFECT, but several weeks later I've had no sharp toothaches, no headaches, and now most importantly, a really great dentist I can rely on. It's such a relief! Such a great person and such a great practitioner. I highly, highly recommend her!

If I could leave 0 stars I would have. Dr. Portale was banking on redoing my 87 year old mother's…read morebridge after they broke and she visited with him a few weeks ago. Dr. Portale explained that it would be necessary to extract 8 upper teeth, put posts for implants in, have a temporary bridge made, and then the permanent bridge would of course be last to be put in and adjusted. He requested a little over $19,000 for these services. A 10% deposit was made in haste, but after some thought, my mother decided that his plan to do all that work at her age was too much to go through and wanted a simpler solution to help with her daily living and of course for aesthetics. I called the office and requested my mother be refunded the deposit. After 12 days a portion was returned and it was explained by Dr. Portale himself that the portion he kept ($1100) was for the office visit (She was in his chair for 10 minutes while he temporarily affixed her broken bridge). Dr. Portale stated that my mother had infections in her mouth and that I would ultimately be responsible for the consequences and that he knows a few people that died from mouth infections (My mother had open heart surgery several years ago and is still on blood thinners, she also is suffering from Alzheimer's dementia, so any infection detected needs to be treated immediately). Ask yourself how and why, if she had infections in her mouth, he would let her leave his office with no follow-up or prescription for the infections? As a medical professional the responsibility to consciously not treat what he claimed to be infections in her mouth is a clear breach of any medical professional's ethics. Maybe it was because there are no and were no infections! I had this confirmed the next day by an emergency room Ph.D. who did her blood work and other testing. Dr. Portale's response to that was, "Well what medical school did you go to?, Was he an emergency dental doctor or a medical doctor?", and then proceeded to negate the doctor's findings and blood work results because he was not a dentist, he stated "they don't know anything about the mouth and teeth". Yesterday, it was confirmed by another Nj State Dentistry Board dentist that there are no infections in my mother's mouth. Dr. Portale is THE most unprofessional, unethical, pompous, rude, arrogant, money hungry, condescending liar I have ever had the unfortunate circumstance of dealing with. He speaks with patients and their families as if they are below him because he went to dental school. How he lays his head down on his pillow and sleeps at night knowing how he disrespects and scams his patients and their families is beyond my imagination. He should have his license revoked and never be able to practice dentistry again. I'm hoping to help this process by contacting the NJ State Dental Board and look forward to providing the recordings of Dr. Portale putting us down, cursing at us and finally hanging up the phone without a chance to respond after he felt painted in a corner with the questions we had regarding the infections he insisted my mother had in her mouth. This review is of no reflection on the office staff. The staff that works for Dr. Portale are a group of sweet, caring and professional individuals - a stark contradiction from Dr. Portale. Please research by checking all of the reviews, the NJ State Board of Dentistry complaints and the NJ State Division of Consumer Affairs complaints that were filed regarding Dr. Portale and then get a second opinion.

Went to see dentist for tooth decay (part of tooth chipped off) and he immediately said a root…read morecanal was needed. I later learned of other option being a tooth implant which has higher chance of success but he never informed me of the option to begin with. Anyway he was quick with the operation and got me out after an hour or so. Looking back at it I feel he was rushing me to make a quick buck before his next appointment (remember this was not a scheduled operation, just a check to see what can be done). 3 days after the operation I had severe jaw pain both above and below the tooth in question. I tried calling him but got the answering machine. I did not leave a message as I don't want to wait for him to get back to me (it was a Saturday; I don't even know if he's working). I got antibiotics from my personal doctor the same day. When I visited the dentist again the next week he said he didn't give me any antibiotics based on his expertise and he didn't think an infection would develop (even though it did). I told him he should have given me the antibiotics just in case so that I would have it on hand if needed (better to be prepared). But he defended his decision by saying that jaw pain may be caused by other things like swelling. So, in other words, he would rather have me in pain and hope it's not an infection rather than take antibiotics as a proactive measure. Futhermore when I requested to have tooth removed he flat out refused and kicked me out of the office. How dare I question his decisions when he flubbed the operation and caused me great pain in the process. How dare I make my own decision to have the tooth pulled out as if it was a slight to his overblown ego. No I will leave this review here as a fair warning for everyone else.
