Brian Shih, M.D. is an incredible Pain Management Physician, an awesome Surgeon and also an excellent Anesthesiologist! Dr. Shih is extremely knowledgeable, very kind and wonderful Physician. Dr. Brian Shih truly cares and listens to the problems that you are experiencing. I first saw Dr. Brian Shih on October 30th. On November 14th. He did an incredible Surgery on my Lumbar Spine as well as my Thoracic Spine. On November 25th. He did an awesome Epidural on my Thoracic Spine. I am so incredibly pleased with Dr.Brian Shih. He is so personally involved with making absolutely the best decisions for his patients are met and in my case he exceeded all expectations and boundaries. Because of Dr. Shih I am quickly gaining relief from my 25+ years of constant Pain and suffering from a major accident at the Dallas, Ft. Worth Airport. I will be seeing Dr.Brian Shih on December 10th. for a post Epidural follow up appointment. He will then order an another Epidural to my Lumbar Spine and 3 weeks later another Epidural to my Cerebral Spine so I can turn my head, get relief to both my upper shoulders as well as both upper arms. I have been in extremely difficult pain for almost 30 years. I suffer with Severe Fibromyalgia as well as Lupus. I've been suffering severely in 24/7 Pain over almost 30 Years. I also suffer from severe Arthritis as well as Chronic Neuropathy. I've have had 11 Knee Knee Surgeries, 8 on my left knee and 3 on my right knee. Since I've been going to Dr.Brian Shih I am now getting my life back after suffering for almost 30 very painful Years. I also suffer with Neuropathy. I have been diagnosed as a Complete ParaPlegic and have been confined to an Electric Hospital Bed as well as a Wheelchair. Amazing doctor who listens to his patients. I have spinal problems, 5 slipped discs in my neck causing pain and restricted movement in my neck, shoulders and arms. Additionally, a drunk driver broke my back in four places so my spine is fused from T10-S2. Dr Shih treats me with a combination of epidurals, PT and medication. He is compassionate, competent and easy to talk to. I'm always have pain, but these treatments help me function and get the most out of life. read more

Again, I can not speak highly enough of Dr. Shih and his care. However, I am continuously frustrated and disturbed by the office staff. Again, I called today to set up an appointment, the person who answered the phone did not identify themselves, they never do! When I gave a greeting there was total silence, I identified myself and asked how the person was , to get some type of response, but no response. Although I was able to set an appointment , I absolutely dread calling this office. This staff desperately needs professional development in reception behavior. Concerns are growing about whether or not the doctor is going to continue to treat patients who have suffered from a stroke, the same way post stroke. Example: if a patient had been treated by this doctor for chronic pain due to a distant car accident that crushed their pelvis- over 10 years ago, by prescribing drugs such as fentanyl patches or morphine in pill form, would the same apply post stroke which occurred 1-2 years ago? If the doctor fears his license could become suspended or at risk, would his office staff have the authority or feel compelled to stand up for something they may see as potentially dangerous for the patient. Given evidence a patient is misusing their fentanyl medication and still being prescribed more as well as being prescribed medication such as morphine pills along with the fentanyl patches, it raises great concern for patients and their families with regards to addiction and whether or not this is actually the best treatment for them. I do hope this doctor as well as all nurses and front desk staff are aware of this matter as it was brought to their Att over a month ago. Today, the patient is due to have a follow up and one can only hope that the doctor as well as his staff can help with this issue and help the patient understand that addiction is not an option and that their means of using these very strong drugs could result in not just another stroke, but also many other worse outcomes for them and their family members who have had to deal with this issue for years and who have suffered through the trauma that has been associated with the pain medications that have been prescribed to the patient causing their further addiction and abuse. read more

I typically don't give a one star review unless of course when you poke the ants nest - meaning my family is involved. I don't feel bad giving this 1 star review, I think Dr. Shih should know the incompetence and rudeness of his staff. First and foremost, If a patient already told your staff that he doesn't have the written prescription that you prescribed they shouldn't question the patient's integrity. He cannot produce a written rx if you haven't given it to him!!! He's not a magician! The least they could do is try to FIGURE OUT A SOLUTION to remedy the situation and COME-UP with an AMICABLE SOLUTION. They shouldn't make a 75 year old perfectly sane man feel like a demented human being. Your office specialize in pain management and YOU of all people should know the importance of these medications especially those that are administered ROUTINELY. A patient with Spinal cancer and Guillaine Barre are on routine pain meds for the love of God!!!!! Wasting your time and energy for senseless back and forth arguments will not do the patient any good and wouldn't reflect really good on you either. I was so frustrated and infuriated with this incident. I will NOT retract this review as people should be cautioned about what to expect of your office staff!!! Dr. Shih is quite good at his job. I've never seen a Dr. who could read an MRI like he can. Most of us patients have nerve issues for a variety of reasons and he knows, by looking at an MRI, just how nerves can become inflamed. I've had well over a dozen epidurals over the years and were all done under a laparoscope, so he knows EXACTLY where to place the steroidal injection. I've been seeing him for almost 10 yrs. after having really bad neuritis and stenosis in my spine. I would caution anyone who desires to take narcotic meds for pain to be VERY CAREFUL. Space out your meds as best you can. Drug dependency is a very miserable experience. Please listen to what I am saying. TAKE MINIMUM NARCOTIC MEDICATION for short periods of time.... Don S read more

I have had horrible shoulder pain for years. I have had 2 surgeries to fix the problem and was referred to Dr. Shih for pain management. First off, I really don't understand the negative reviews on here... he and his staff have always been nothing but professional and I truly feel like he takes the time to listen to me and my ever growing frustration with healing from this shoulder issue. I never feel rushed or not listened to. I work in the film industry and have had to juggle my appointments at times and his staff has always been really accommodating. I came to this office I believe in 2010/2011 for chronic pain management. Mind you, I had no idea how pain management worked. I was with Dr Shih for 4 to 5 years. During this time my prescription to opiates was ever increasing due to my body's acclimation to the drug. By 2015 I had gotten up to 365 mg OxyContin. I was a mess. I knew I could not go forward like this. I was going to die if I continued on this path. I asked the doctor to start reducing the medication. He explained to me I'll always be in pain and that I would have to remain on pain relievers. Then, he suggested to put me on Fentanyl. Lucky, I had just seen an episode on 60 Minutes on the dangers of Fentanyl. I said no and please take me off this vile drug. It took me a full year to step down from this vile drug and it was the most painful experience, which also compounded my chronic pain. I ended up in the Hospital ER 5 times towards the end of tapering off. The hospital's attempt to reach his office was to no avail. Not even the hospital could get through to Dr Shih. What the drug did to me mentally and physically had caused me to move out of my apartment of 20 years to move into Assisted Living for a couple of years to work up to my independence again. During this time I was connected to a Neurologist who asked me if any alternative pain management was explained to me? I said no. She explained to me that less evasive alternatives were available to manage my pain (I.e., acupuncture, physical therapy, cognitive therapy and etc). Today, 2020, I'm on the path of alternative healing and able to live with my condition with more integrity than when heavily medicated. I feel that Dr Shih's office is part of the pandemic of our reliance on opiates. I lost a decade under his care. I hope I can help others not to do the same. read more

I have been a patient of Dr Shih for about 9 years now and cannot recommend him highly enough! He is THE BEST PAIN MANAGEMENT DOCTOR I have ever had; he is personable and compassionate and easy to talk to and doesn't rush you. I assume Dr. Shih is a good doctor since he is so busy. But it is downright unethical of him to be taking new patients when he can't see them in a timely manner. This is a doctor dealing in pain management! It took me one month to get the initial appointment for a compressed nerve in my cervical spine. At the appointment ge told me his plan was to give me 3 epidurals. He said it would happen in a week or two. (I am on the verge of having permanent muscle atrophy in my forearm due to the compression, not to mention the constant and extreme burning pain in my hand.) But when the referral gets in the next work day, I call the office and they tell me I can't get the epidural for a month. By then I will definitely have permanent atrophy. After all this waste of time, I saw Dr. Jeter today and will get the epidural next week. read more

Never going here. Got a referral for an epidural. Called in, they refused to schedule an appointment because they didn't have a referral... which had been faxed over long before I called. Instead, they tell me they'll call me back. Several days pass. They don't. I call in, NOW they tell me they will NOT perform a procedure if my injury is due to a car accident, even thought my insurance WILL pay for it. Instead, they demand a letter from an attorney stating the case is closed, or they won't see me. Staff was RUDE, doesn't communicate well, and left me hanging. BE FOREWARNED. I see other negative reviews for the SAME THING as well. The office STAFF HERE SUCKS. The doctor himself may be great, I don't know. But his staff is ATROCIOUS. read more

After years of chronic back pain and arthritis in both hands, I attempted homeopathic injections for months, tried acupuncture and so many other remedies. I was referred to Dr. Shih by MPI and now I wouldn't go anywhere else! His Assistant Daisy Franco is very compassionate, professional and very knowledgeable, as is Dr. Shih. Dr Shih is a marvelous person and superb physician. One of my parents has been a Pain Mgt patient for nearly 20 years. I've attended many appointments with prior pain mgt Md's. Dr Shih asks questions, genuinely listens to patients and speaks with them not 'at them'. My parent lives in a nursing facility. Because of this some administrative flexibility has been required and he's been helpful. He's been generous with his time. I went to Dr. Shih over a period of a year. My condition (bulging disc) was correctly diagnosed by him and I was treated for pain. The treatment worked over periods of time, but eventually we felt that surgery was a likelihood. I went to three surgeons for their opinions, and they all disagreed on the best course of action, but interestingly the one thing they'll agreed with was Dr. Shih's diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Shih and his staff treated me with professionalism and care, and thanks to his diagnosis and my surgery, I am 90% better than I was. I would recommend him highly. read more

Have been seeing Dr. Shih for epidurals for many years and I really like him a lot. Last couple times office has been less than helpful. On last epidural they went to wrong insurance for pre-approval delaying my getting the procedure. After 1st, and 25% relief, Dr. Shih said would order 2nd that day. Checked 4 days later to find that staff had not applied for approval. When called office I was told my insurance would not approve 2nd until 6 weeks after 1st. That will be after I'm no longer available to get it as I explained to both Dr. Shih and the staff. My insurance said that the 6 week requirement was not true and they would approve based on medical necessity. Shih's staff would not even submit when I asked them to, even even if it got denied, as I would talk to insurance to get denial reverse. As much as I like Dr. Shih, I'm done with his practice solely due to the office. read more

Been a patient of Dr. Shih for the past couple of months. Been undergoing weekly cervical epidurals for the past 3 weeks. Not sure if its the steroids in my neck talking but I have not been impressed by the doctor or his office. Not much in the way of doctor - patient communication. He speaks to me when I'm on the gurney and the anesthesia has started. I'll let you know how lousy I feel during my next appointment. As for you staff, I was charged $40 to have the 2 page state disability extension filled out. Initially I was annoyed. Then, as I thought about it, I became disgusted. How dare you hold state disability checks hostage for people who are sick and injured? We can talk about that too during my next appointment. I'd rather be talking to my doctor about how to get better. read more

I like Dr. Shih as a doctor, and really have no problems with him. The problem is his office staff. Asked three times to have the doctor's notes faxed to my general practitioner, but they never did. Had an MRI report sent to the doctor's office and asked twice that he call to discuss. Never did. The scheduler told me three weeks in advance when my epidural was scheduled, and the day before when my ride was arranged... She changed the time. When you call to ask a question, there often seems to be confusion on who should handle the call. Often times when on hold, I was disconnected and had to call back. I reported all of these complaints to the office scheduler on my last followup visit, and told her I was going to change doctors because of it. You would think she would have told the doctor about my concerns and that he would have called to discuss... No, nothing. They are in desperate need of an office manager, but I'm in good hands now with a different doctor. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Shih's for well over two years now. I deal with chronic disease/pain issues which hit an all-time high (or low really! LOL) during 2009. I have been dealing with Dr's of all sorts (specialists/general etc) over the years and have become quite adept at sizing them up and making sure that I am communicating properly and that they, in turn, do the same. If I feel at anytime that the Dr. is not listening or that I am not getting my questions/concerns addressed, I will either try to work with the Dr. to fix it or leave IMMEDIATELY. My conditions are such that I can ill afford (no pun) to waste my time with a Dr. who is not going to take me seriously; make me feel like a hypochondriac; rush through an exam/consultation; or make me wait on him/her forever. Dr. Shih and his staff do none of these things. Dr. Shih is the ONLY Dr. (and I saw at least 5 prior) who took me seriously, properly and correctly diagnosed my conditions and then proceeded to aggressively treat me. I had so much paperwork done by his office for disability (permanent), insurance matters and a disabled placard to name a few, all of which were done in record time and with no errors or back and forth that the fee was nothing! It was worth it. I have nerve root blocks done routinely by Dr. Shih and have nothing but the utmost respect and admiration for what he does. He is thorough, compassionate, professional, knowledgeable and a GREAT person to boot. Daisy Franco, his associate, is no less awesome. They communicate with one another and to my amazement and wonder, they communicate expertly with all of my other treating physicians AND my insurance company, which in my experience is truly remarkable. Sometimes, Drs don't properly "talk" to one another and things are missed that can be either costly, painful or both! His office staff is no less professional and efficient and some have even become personal Facebook friends of mine! If I could, I would clone Dr.s Shih and Franco and make them my specialists in all the other areas that I require medical attention in, and there are a few, trust and believe me... If you've had any experience other than the one I outline in this "review", you may want to consider your own approach because more than likely it's NOT THIS Dr.'s issue. No offense. I have been put "under" at a minimum no less than 6 times by him and I trust no other, except maybe my primary care guy, with my life. Dr. Shih, Dr. Franco and staff, you get nothing but love from me. Oh, ok, and maybe some of my money but I will gladly give it over knowing I got more than my money's worth and maybe even feeling a bit like I should give more. But, I won't get too crazy..LOL Make your appointment ASAP! You will NOT be disappointed. If you are, hey, everyone has off days, but it's not likely his fault. Credit given, where credit is due. If I could give this a zero star I would. Dr. Shih at first was fine. It took a long time to get the first appointment though. I received my referral and received no calls from Dr. Shih's office. I called them up and they told me they had not received the referral. This went on for a few weeks. Then I finally got my appointment and went in. He seemed like a nice guy. I have an L4-L5 bulging disk. I schedule a series of 3 epidural shoots. After the 3rd shoot I scheduled a follow up appointment which I was eager to because the shoots did not work. In fact I was having leg cramps at night which I never had before and over all it felt a bit worse. I finally got a schedule 2.5 weeks later. I had to cancel do to work and another 2.5 weeks for the next appointment. Another job came up and had to reschedule again for another 2.5 weeks. It took 1.5 months to get a follow up appointment. It takes for ever to get an appointment with him. 2.5 weeks is a long time. So, I showed up and we decided to get a new MRI to see if something else was going on because the shoots did not work. I received my MRI and scheduled a follow up with him. 3 weeks to get my follow up appointment which of course I received work and had to cancel. So one month later after the MRI I go in to have my follow up appointment for him to tell me there is nothing more he can do for me and I should look into going to a surgeon. I waited a month for him to tell me this!! I could of received a phone call from him or from his staff. I was in pain during this all and I'm still in pain. During all of this his staff seemed rude and disconnected. They seemed to not care. I mentioned to Dr. Shih during our last visit that it takes such a long time to make an appointment. His words were, "Yah, good luck with that.". Really!? I guess he received his check. Lucky my medical payed for it because there was a number of $6100 for this. It annoys me that doctors have no repercussions to treating there patients poorly. If the staff and Dr. Shih cared a bit more it might have changed my view. Except the long time it takes to get an appointment. Do yourself a favor. If you primary doctor gives you a referral to see Dr. Shih. I would request to see a different pain specialist. I plan to never set foot in that office again. read more
