I went to see Dr. Flyer this morning for an inflamed leg/hip. Long story short I need an MRI to see what's going on. In order for an MRI to be approved you have to get insurance to request a referral, because I have an HMO and not a PPO I'm assuming. I feel bad for the two women in the office, they were both very patient and kind with me. Even the doctor himself was kind, at first. I told him I've been in pain for 4 weeks now so it's kind of a time pressing matter, and as it's Friday I didn't want to go into the weekend without the MRI. After trying to figure out paperwork and making phone calls to my insurance for about 45 min, Dr. Flyer insisted his receptionist hang up the phone and stop dealing with it. As if I wasn't standing right there to hear him and kept with insisting by yelling out of his office. Yes, I understand time should be equated to all your patients. But it was my first time in your office, you didn't address me directly but made me feel like a by stander who you didn't give a F about, excuse my language. I'm a young, healthy 34 year old woman. I just needed some help from my health care provider that was assigned to me. Well good luck with that. You won't see me back in that office ever again. read more

I went to this "doctor" for service and they asked if I wanted to have some blood tests done, stating that it would b covered by what I paid that day. They later sent me a bill for several hundred dollars and a notice that they were sending this to collections, and called me a liar. No. Dr. Flyer is a liar and I finally get to tell someone about who he really is. I'd say this guy is more involved in fraud than medicine. read more

I was a patient of Dr Wu (who was great) .. And, went to Dr Flyer when I was due for my physical. Like Heidi - I like it that Dr Flyer TAKES THE TIME to explain situations or why he has an opinion about your medical issues. When I was very sick from weeks of a sinus infection (my first one ever) - his treatment was SPOT ON. I got well faster than many of my Pals going through the same thing this past winter. It is very obvious in the meeting with the Dr that he is very knowledgeable and happy to discuss (in my case) all the unique things you might wonder about - like IV Vitamin Therapy. Rather than dismiss out of hand - he explains how/ why he has his point of view. I LOVE this in a Doctor ... Meanwhile - about some of these reviews about his payment procedure. I was very sad to see some of these reviews. First I'd like to say that I've been there and paid for services many times and there is POSITIVELY NO scam going on. And, there is nothing wrong with a Doctor asking for payment at the time of treatment. MANY do this - in fact the closer you get to Bedford Drive - the more they do it. I see 3 Doctors that do this. 1) Mammogram 2) Gynecologist 3) Eye doctor for my annual. Only my skin doctor bills me after the EOB. When I first went to Dr Flyer and they introduced the payment procedure I happily did so. In fact, I always preferred paying the amount I'd have due when I saw the Doctor vs waiting for the EOB. Plus my deductible ( like many) is very high - $3,000. So, the money IS due the Doctor. Basically, by me paying upon receipt of treatment - I am saving the massive costs to the Doctor's staff for billing and collections. And, it keeps costs DOWN. In my case when I got my EOB - they actually had allowed MORE to me than the Dr had me pay. So, I actually SAVED money. I mean think about it - (especially if you - like me - have a deducible that needs to be met).. Why make the Doctor wait to be paid? The OTHER thing I like (and it has resulted in me referring new patients to Dr Flyer) is that even if this Dr is NOT in your network (or you don't have insurance) - Everyone is charged the same amount. One last thing. Lynn - She's been there some time. And, has only EVER been completely helpful for me. When sick she gets me in to see the Doctor and she takes a personal interest. Brian is a decent enough guy, but his staff is atrocious. I attempted to get a simple answer about an EOB from my insurance company. I was talked over, interrupted and then hung up on by Lilly. Extremely rude and unprofessional and very, very sly and heavy handed in they way they go about getting a payment for their services upfront - which is at a major premium to average cost of providers in the area. If you have insurance find another provider. I wish I had gone with someone in my network. I was referred to Brian by another provider, whom I will also never go to again. read more

Dr. Flyer is a genuine person! He cares for you on multiple levels~Limits any type of prescription use (aka solves the problem as natural as possible before just taking a 'pill'). For example, he had his front desk office print me up a specialized stretching routine for my herniated disk, etc. & this was only one occurrence of extra help they gave me-many more. He is a very caring Doctor. Every appointment he asks me how i'm doing in a detailed manner. I will keep him as my doctor for good! Love him! I've had Dr. Flyer as my primary care physician for several years now and I highly recommend him. He spends more time with me every single visit than most other physicians spend in six visits. He shows genuine concern and compassion and carefully answers every question I have. He's a nice guy to boot! His office staff are also extremely friendly and helpful. I had been searching for a physician who I could trust for several years and I'm very glad I finally found Dr. Flyer. If you're looking for an alternative to the guy who asks you a few questions for one minute before heading to next room he is it! If you're looking for a primary care physician, I definitely recommend Dr. Flyer. He helped me to figure out that all the "colds" I've gotten over the years are actually sinus infections. With his help, I'm now able to PREVENT these infections from happening in the first place. These pesky things have plagued me 2 or even 3 times a year for as long as I can remember... such a relief! I am on Dr. Flyer's monthly program which includes office visits whenever needed, blood tests at no extra charge, plus I can email him anytime I have a concern about my health and he always gets back to me super-fast, even in his off-hours! First visit, very through. There 2 hrs. We were referred by Dr Whiteman, attending m.d., Cedars Sinai ER. Read reviews confirmed insurance covered visit and it did.EKG test for baseline. Ultrasound for diagnosis that was benifical to future treatment were all insurance covered. Dr was straight forward and personallble. His staff were warm and efficient as you would want. As others have mentioned, Dr. Flyer's office is running what appears to be a scam. And they should stop. He recently took over Dr. Wu's practice and I had no trouble with her billing. My insurance covered my appointments 100% and I did not even have a co-pay for my yearly check up. Recently I went and Dr. Flyer's office charged me 100 percent at the end of my visit. This seemed very odd to me since they are in network with my insurance company. Well 2 months later they still have not paid me back and my insurance company told me it is unethical what they are doing. I have three nice ladies from my insurance company working on this and it is still not resolved. I wish I had checked out these reviews first! To top it off, he barely did anything at the physical. All he did was ask me "leading" questions. So strange. read more

Dr Flyer should not be considered "in net work" with any insurance companies. He requires full payment upfront and assures his patients that they will be reimbursed according to their insurance coverage. In my case, I only owe a $25 co-pay when I see a regular doctor who is in-network. This is not the case at Dr. Flyers office, as he "does things differently". When a physician agrees to be "in net work" with an insurance company they enter into an agreement, and the insurance company rarely pays them in full what they bill. Right or wrong, that is between the doctor and the insurance company and their contract. Dr Flyer simply takes care of this by making the patient pay the difference by withholding the money that was paid up front. If you love him as a doctor, as it seems a lot of people on here do, and don't have a problem with this, then good for you. I didn't particularly care for him, nor the office, and had I known the visit was going to cost me hundreds of dollars out of pocket, I would never have gone to him. It was a pretty dreadful experience over all. It took them 2 full months to get me the reimbursement check - plenty of phone calls to them and every time the check was "going out tomorrow" and no one ever knew why it was taking so long. I finally had to pick it up myself only to find that it was less than half of what I had been expecting. My co-worker is dealing with the same issue. Dr Flyer is fully aware of all of the above and blames everything on evil insurance companies. I understand the frustration physicians must have with insurance companies, but be upfront about your policies, and take yourself out of net work, don't cheat the patients. read more

It stinks having so many people calling you out on your scam huh? Dr. Flyer's response below to his illegal practices is even more disturbing. When you accept insurance you as the Dr. do not decide what the "discount" is on your services. The patients insurance sets what the rates is. If my insurance says I get a free wellness checkup a year in network and your are in network, then you can't bill me more than the insurance pays you back. It is pretty simple. I, along with others have reported this shady practice to the California Medical board. Clearly they have made tons of patients angry and instead of realizing their mistakes and deciding to be be truly honest, they are defending themselves. If they were honest and upfront, why would everyone be so mad? Oh and by the way- you never sent me my check (that was "in the mail" twice) so I guess you can excuse that as well? Hey Lynn, here's a tip: I know you want to keep your little speech vague when people check in so you can rip them off, but if you or Dr. Flyer get tired of your name being dragged through the gutter, why don't you try this: Patient: "Do you accept insurance: Lynn: "While we do take it, we operate different than most practices. We do not honor your benefits which means that you will not get the same perks that you would get with most doctors. The way our office works is we charge 100 percent upfront and ONLY pay back what the insurance pays us and we don't honor their suggested billing rates. Therefore, if you were expecting your free yearly exam, it's not going to be free with us. I must repeat, we do not honor your benefits." There you have it Brian and Lynn! Try being honest. Clearly what you are saying now is not working. If you have worked so hard building up your name and practice, why are you trashing it? The internet is now filled with people who are angry they got ripped off by you. And by the way, you have also dragged Dr. Wu's name through the gutter as well. Worst doctor experience I've ever had. Sure the medical reason I went for was solved by a prescription but the frustration regarding billing is why I'll never go back to this office. Their policy is that you pay upfront and then after the insurance claim is filed and the insurance pays them, you get refunded. Its been almost 4 months and I still have not seen the refund I'm owed ($200). I've spoken to them on the phone over 15 times and always get the response "I'll contact billing and get back to you." I've never been called back. I have, however, been told that the checks in the mail and of course never received it. I don't know if its horrible organization on the part of the office or that its a scam. I plan on making an office visit to try to collect. I'm not a bill collector! I should not have to go to these lengths to be refunded what they owe me. read more

I was a patient of Dr Flyer for several years, through the entire 90s and I absolutely ENJOYED interacting with him. He was all the things that many the other reviews talked about: Professional, Knowledgeable, Intelligent, Pleasant, Nice and he ALWAYS took the time to both explain AND to listen. He is the single-best doctor I have ever had (and that's saying a lot since my other doctors are also good.) I only switched doctors (very very reluctantly) in the early 2000s because Dr Flyer stopped accepting insurance. He sent a very nice letter explaining his reasoning and lowered all his rates. I was using HMOs then (and still do). Most HMOs do not reimburse non-Network medical expenses and I didn't have the extra means to pay for my medical visits without insurance, to absorb the extra costs. But I have referred CLOSE friends to him, when they had problems and didn't have insurance. Because I knew #1 that he would take great care of them and #2 that this rates were very fair, esp. for the quality of the services rendered. Finally, I never had issues interacting with his staff, I know that many of them have been with him for a long time, Sokoro (? sorry if I'm butchering the spelling) is especially wonderful. As far as billing issues, I didn't have any experience with that. My friends who went to see him in the last few years all paid for their treatment on the spot. And when i was seeing him, I was using my insurance (which he used to accept) and do not recall any issues with that. So in conclusion, as long as you understand that Dr Flyer does not accept insurance and you're ok with paying for your treatment in full at the time of service, Dr Flyer is HIGHLY recommended both as an individual and as a Doctor. read more

This office is not responding to my request to give me my medical records. They are legally mine and I am certain he is doctoring them as he knows his charges are erroneous! Sad to say I'm moving on... I went to Heidi Wu for years and she was amazing in every way. I gave Dr. Flyer a shot over several visits since taking over Heidi's practice. He's very thorough, has great bedside manner and is very responsive with reporting test results, making time for you with sick visits etc. I think he's a pretty good Dr. and I do have a lot of respect for him, however, the billing situation is so off-putting that I can't stomach it anymore. Here's my specific issue: I go to a lot of the top "Beverly Hills Dr.s" and "get" the issues with insurance. In some cases, these Dr.s don't accept insurance at all and I still go to them because the Dr is worth it and the staff is professional and helpful (and luckily, I can afford it). However, Dr. Flyer's staff is really defensive when you ask basic questions about insurance, payment etc. It's to the point where you just want to drop it because of the reaction to any question asked. After several visits with just blindly paying, without question, I finally called and asked if the $400 I paid for a random sick visit was ever submitted. The billing lady looked it up and saw that it was paid a few months prior but she filed the check and forgot to send to me. She was very, very short and said something to the effect of "honest mistake, I'll get it out today". That initially concerned me because if I hadn't called, who knows if/when I would have gotten reimbursed. However, mistakes happen so I moved on. 2 weeks later, nothing was sent. I called again and asked about the check. Same response "sorry, honest mistake, I'll send ASAP" and RUSHED to get off the phone. She was super weird about it. I finally got the check and was happy to move on. Until... I get strep throat a few months later and go back in. When I pay, the billing lady says "oh you only owe $x this time because you have a credit". I'm puzzled as to why I would have a credit and ask why. She says "Well, we hold back some of your payment from previous visits and apply to future visits". Furthermore, her tone indicated that she was bothered to have to even explain. I was so incredibly shocked to hear this, especially given her tone. I mean, you float money upfront for your visit and then float money for future visits?? Without openly communicating about it? What if you move or switch Dr.s or something?? My response was "DON'T hold back payment from me ever again please". She defensively responded "that's fine with me", again, in a tone I'm not used to experiencing from anyone in a service based business. I hesitated to write a review at all. My goal in writing is to shed light on what the specific issue is. To recap - Dr. Flyer is a pretty good Dr but the billing staff doesn't handle things in a professional manner at all. If they handled things in a "normal" and professional way, I'd reconsider switching Drs and would likely accept the inconvenient billing practices. Unfortunately, I'm moving on and returning back to my old regular Dr., who coincidentally, told me that Heidi Wu was his Dr. for many years too before she moved to Hawaii! He too has moved on but of course did not share anything about Dr. Flyer or his office. He's a great Dr. and very professional. read more

DON'T GO TO THIS HORRIBLE DOCTOR (If I can give him zero stars, I would!!!!) I totally agree with everyone how posted one star and not the fake people who posted 5 stars. I can't believe he is still practicing with such unethical standards. I felt cheated and ripped off...The grievance board clearly stated that he can only accept what is allowed, but yet he is contracted with insurance companies, but bills like he doesn't take insurance. You have to pay a ton of money up front. He charged me $406 for a check up, but billed the insurance company $895. Outrageous. Also, during my visit, he was constantly telling me how I can cut corners with the insurance company. He didn't listen to a word I was saying about my problems, he was concerned on how much money to make with adding extra, unnecessary tests!!!!! When I questioned his ethics and his "contract" with patients, he accused me of not being a lawyer and not knowing what I was talking about. He spoke to me in a very demeaning tone of voice. It felt rehearsed, like he has given this speech before. You wouldn't go to an auto repair shop that was dishonest and charged you 5 times what you should have paid, so why would anyone go to a doctor who did the same thing? If he can go to sleep at night knowing that he rips people off, then this is one doctor you should stay clear off. Your health is #1, and you want to be able to trust the doctor who prescribes you medicine and gives you medical advice. I went to see Brian Flyer, MD in my doctor's absence on March 11. I was very sick suffering from flem, body aches. Not only did he not prescribe any helpful medication but his nurse staff was horribe and rude. Also, they make you pay upfront for your services until your insurance pays for your visit. Still waitting on my refund almost a month later. The only person who is of any value in his office is his receptionist Socorro. I would advise to not use this doctor. read more

Floyd A. Roberts (56), Long Beach, CA Dr. Brian Flyer is an excellent Internist, his diagnosis are spot on. My wife Lynn Roberts is Dr. Flyer's RN, she handed Dr. Flyer a standing MRI chart in February of 2013. Upon reading the chart Dr. Flyer said without skipping a beat this person needs both hips replaced, that person was me. Dr. Flyer asked Lynn if this person was a patient, Lynn said no he's my husband, Dr. Flyer then said he is now get him in here immediately. The rest is as they say is history, I now have two new hips as of July 10, 2013 (left) September 17, 2014 (right) respectfully, thanks to Dr. Flyers diagnosis and referring me to Dr. Robert Klapper (surgeon). I'm sure it seams as though I'm bias towards Dr. Flyer because my wife is his nurse. Not the case, I'd recommend Dr. Flyer even if she wasn't. read more

Dr. Flyer is our family physician for over 25 years. He has always taken the time to listen to us, and had been fantastic with follow up. He is very thorough with every exam, and only orders extra testing when absolutely necessary. We have also known his staff from the very beginning, and he has had no turnover as long as we have been going there. That right there is a testament to his integrity. As far as insurance and billing, we have never had a problem. They are very clear about what is covered and what is the patient responsibility. Seeing other reviews that had the same billing experience as I had, I must admit, Dr. Flyer needs to deal with the insurance companies differently and not put the responsibility on the patient. I had been a patient with Dr. Wu for many years and never had the problems like I had with Dr. Flyer regarding billing. My first appointment was a physical which he seemed very inattentive and cursory and looked to rely solely on the blood work. I had to pay for the visit in full up front and then had to harass the office for months to get reimbursed, which was only for a fraction of what I paid even though Blue Shield told me I was owed more. Lynn in the office seemed to be upset at me for even questioning the fact that Blue Shield said I should have never paid upfront with a Network provider. They claim that's how they do things, but to be honest it left me very upset and frustrated! read more

I've only seen Dr. Flyer once (when it came down to it, I just needed to find someone a bit closer to my area) but he was great - easy to talk to, knowledgeable, and he was diligent about following up on a couple things he was concerned about from my first exam. The monthly program is great for folks without insurance who need regular visits and blood tests. He will definitely get on you to follow up with your health issues, and it's obvious that he cares. Believe the negative reviews. Dr Flyer is deceptive and will take your money. The unfortunate reality is that insurance and billing issues aside, he actually seems like a great doctor. I visited him once and he was attentive, knowledgable and helpful. Unfortunately he and his staff deceived me, claiming the entire visit and lab tests he ordered were covered under my insurance and that they accepted my Blue Shield insurance. They did not, later claiming they were a "boutique medical office" and did not submit insurance claims. They forced me to pay for the visit and all procedures directly out of pocket, which ended up costing me several hundred dollars. Dr. Flyer even got on the phone with me to complain about how "insurance companies are the problem" and how he "refuses to deal with them." In short, if you have medical insurance, and even if your insurance covers the exact services you receive, it means nothing to Dr. Flyer. Expect to pay for everything out of pocket. Dr. Flyer and his staff deceived me as a patient and I am never going back. read more

I agree with everyone about how he runs his practice. He is a contracted provider with most of the PPO insurance. When the doctor is contracted with the insurance HE CAN NOT COLLECT more than the allowed amount from the patient based on that insurance fee schedule. He can collect the insurance allowed amount if the deductible has not been met. BUT AGAIN ONLY THE ALLOWED AMOUNT OF THE INSURANCE SET FEE SCHEDULE AND NO MORE. If the insurance pays the full allowed amount to the dr, then the patient should get a full refund. There are also contractual adjustments that the doctor has to do when he is contracted. I went in because I was sick, he charged for $450.00 upfront, no labs or anything else was done. When i asked if the doctor was contracted I was told by the from office that he was, which is why I paid. Since I had been sick , I did not call my insurance to verify whether he was contracted or not. It wasn't until the next day , I called my insurance which was Blue Shield and was told that he was contracted and that I should have paid anything since my deductible was met. I have great insurance so the office visit would have been covered at 100% of the allowed amount and I would have zero out of pocket!! When I called the office , I talked to the nurse to complained and she said she understand why I was upset but that she has tried explaining that to the doctor but he doesn't wan to listen. Nevertheless I waited for my insurance to pay the claim, they paid 262.00 and no patient responsibility which was the contracted allowed amount. Which means I paid $450.00 too much and the doctor got an extra $262.00 for being fraudulent. I filed a complaint with Blue Shield and they called the doctors office and the dr's office said they would refund me my money back. I finally received a check but for only $80 something dollars back???? Were was the rest? I called the doctors office again and again I talked to another staff member that said she didn't agree with his methods but there was nothing she can do. He may be a great doctor, but a fraudulent one. As a doctor he should want to get a great reputation in this community. Lucky for him , my husband works for the Insurance Commissioner's office and I also work for several doctors in the Cedars Sinai Community that would refer patient's to him. I have opened up a case against him and also let some of the referring doctors know not to refer any more patients there. I HAVE SOME GREAT ADVICE, IF YOU WANT TO COLLECT PAYMENT IN FULL FROM THE PATIENTS THEN YOU SHOULD TERMINATE YOUR CONTRACTS WITH THE INSURANCE COMPANIES AND ALSO LET THE PATIENT KNOW UP FRONT WHAT YOUR POLICY IS. FOR THOSE PATIENTS THAT WERE PATIENTS OF DR WU, THEY SIGNED A FINANCIAL POLICY. HER PATIENTS THAT ARE NOW SEEING THE DR NEVER SIGNED A FINANCIAL POLICY FOR DR BRIAN FLYER. HAVE THE PATIENTS SIGN A NEW FINANCIAL POLICY THAT REFLECTS YOUR PRACTICE DIRECTLY. read more
