Brett is amazing. He did bring his wife in to work and she is not so amazing. If you are late or have been late in the past on your payment she is totally demoralizing, even if your payment has been paid in full. Not a nice lady at all. Dr. Johnson and his team so nice and wonderful. I should mention I despise the dentist (Sorry Dr. J, nothing personal)! However, they really made me feel comfortable and cared for. His wife and the front desk receptionist, Sandi, were so kind and welcoming, and my hygienist Laura did a great job with my cleaning. I was listening to metal music the entire time to drown out the horrid dental noises and she worked with me to give nonverbal signals. They even went the extra step of helping make sure my insurance was all taken care of, which I really appreciated. Everyone there is friendly, professional, and easy to talk to. I recently changed dentists not because I didn't like my old dentist but she was really picky about the insurance she accepted. I have to say that the entire experience is different at Dr. Johnson's office... First, I feel like I can call him Brett so I will, but his style of dentistry is almost fun if that's even possible. He works very quickly so your time in the chair is minimal and because of that, so is the inherent discomfort of dentistry. One noteworthy trait of Brett's office is heavy metal music played at volumes that are conducive to a small party... I personally like the music so it enhances the experience for me. I'm pretty sure that nobody likes the elevator music most dentists play softly in the background as an annoyance. I have theory that the lack of walls in the dental area (more like cubicle walls) drives the volume up to drive the sounds of drilling down... Anyways, Brenda was a good hygienist, Brett was a good Dentist, they take my insurance, I have permanently switched. I did have one problem with a filling in a tricky spot that fell out but I was able to make an appointment quickly and it took all of 5 minutes to fix. He is very personable and friendly, his staff is welcoming and very competent, and the office is comfortable as long as you like diverse, sometimes jarring, rock music. I've never had a problem with any dental work he's done for me, and I like his hygeinists. He seems to be conservative about treatment and his front office has always given me accurate estimates. I have been a patient of Dr. Johnson's for over a year now, and have always received excellent treatment from him and his staff. Everyone is professional, knowledgeable, and friendly. My dental hygienist, Sheree, very willingly adjusts her treatment methods in order to accommodate my extreme sensitivity due to periodontal disease. She's so gentle that I almost fall asleep in her chair! And then there's Robyn, the office manager, who seems to have encyclopedic knowledge about insurance companies. She's very helpful and never gets rattled when I have to change an appointment. It's a great group of professionals that are working there and I feel lucky to have found them. Dr. Johnson was a very attentive dentist at first and then I had a poor experience with him. To make a long story short I had a crown fail from day one. When the final crown came in Dr. Johnson decided to grind down a piece of tooth hitting a nerve causing a sharp jolt of pain because he did not use any type of pain blocker nor gave me any warning. After three visits of the crown falling off Dr. Johnson kept gluing it back on and should have stepped up and addressed the issue after the first time that the crown fell off. The frustration is that he is the professional and did not attempt to figure out why the crown kept failing. The tooth became so decayed that it broke off and I ended up using up my entire year of benefits and $2500 out of pocket for a tooth implant. After contacting Dr. Johnson in regards to refunding a portion of his failed work, he called me up yelling stating it was my fault that the crown failed. After he contacted my current dentist and oral surgeon he never returned my call with any type of conclusion to my inquiry. He is very immature and unprofessional and I do not recommend this dentist. After visiting a new dentist I asked him to check a tooth that Dr. Johnson claimed had a cavity to be filled. My new dentist did not find a cavity after examining my mouth and taking additional x-rays. I came to the conclusion that Dr. Johnson is a scam and will make up dental work to collect insurance money. read more

The worst dental experience I've ever had; and I've been going to dentists for 50 years now. I'm an objective guy, a teacher, and put up with a good deal of stuff before calling someone on their actions. Brett gave me what is called an injection injury. I didn't know anything about this sort of thing before it happened but I was soon to find out. I went in for some routine work and left with the typical numb mouth area where the needle was inserted. But the numbness didn't go away. Even by the next day, and the next, and the next and before long four days had gone by without a change. I called him and he was prompt to return my call on a weekend (what was to be the first of several red flags). He told me that in some people who get Septocain there could sometimes be lingering numbness that doesn't go away as soon as usual. Great, I could deal with that!! My whole tongue and cheek area were still numb after a week. But he told me that this was something I could expect and that the medication would wear off. Well another week went by and I still couldn't tell I had a tongue! I was really starting to feel nervous because I couldn't taste my food and I could actually bite my tongue and not feel a thing. Two weeks later, I called him back and he now told me this sort of thing sometimes lasts up to 30 days. I pressed him on the details of what was going on and he was less than cooperative in describing what was happening to me, even when I was clear that I had detailed understanding of neurology, the mechanics of nerve conduction, etc. At this point he told me that it sounded like I had a nerve had been "bruised". I hadn't told him any additional facts and he never acknowledged a bit of responsibility, sympathy, or help. I now had a new diagnosis to deal with. I teach science, anatomy, and have a degree from U.C. and I'd never heard of this sort of thing before. Good reason; "bruised" nerves don't exist! Bruising happens with broken blood vessels. That was something Dr Johnson made up to placate me, as a redirect to what was really happening that he didn't want to discuss. I went on to ask what I could do and he told me all I could do was to wait it out and it would eventually get better. He tersely apologized, but said he couldn't help me any more. I really was left feeling "hung out to dry" 30 days came and went. Six weeks later I did some background research to find out more about what really happened which is called an "injection injury"; only to discover this is not covered by any dental insurance and the only recourse patients have is legal litigation against the dentist. I really didn't have time to pursue this option with the pace of my teaching job and responsibilities at school. I decided to give it more time. Two and a half months went by with no change in condition before I finally called an an attorney, Todd Osborn, specializing in injection injuries. He told me it is important to have your condition evaluated promptly by a specialist, which I did not. The two specialist dentists that we discussed are Brian Schmidt at UCSF School of Dentistry and Nestor Karas, D.D.S., M.D., in Walnut Creek. He told me he was willing to represent me but that I was on the edge of being able to win a case and that people in my situation can go months or years without being able to feel or taste. I decided again to wait it out, giving Dr. Johnson the benefit of the doubt. Obviously Dr. Johnson and his staff had better more pressing issues to deal with than one of their patients who had been seriously injured, albeit by accident, by a dentist who obviously doesn't care about what his patients are going through. I don't usually complain about the service I receive unless its really serious. Over a year and a half later I am luckily just now almost completely have regained feeling and taste ability in my mouth. It has been a long wait. But the way I was treated by Dr. Johnson and his staff was outright rude; not lifting a finger to provide accurate information, downplaying the seriousness of the situation, often redirecting our conversations and trivializing my situation. There are a few other attorneys you may wish to contact in addition to Todd Osborn if Dr. Johnson does this to you; they are Paul Silver in Santa Rosa and Ed Zinman in San Francisco. Good luck and don't wait as long as I did to react. Perhaps then insurance companies, dental law, and dentists will acknowledge the seriousness of this type of injury with successful malpractice litigation. read more

On the positive side, the office is clean & nice, and the staff are attentive and friendly. I gave this office 2 visits, since I was new to the area and figured anyone could have a bad day, but I just can't do a 3rd time. The problem? I've never had such a painful cleaning in my life. Even the one time I had my teeth scraped below the gumline didn't hurt this bad. The first time I went, my mouth hurt for 2-3 days afterward. I gave it another shot and had the same thing happened. I have a high tolerance for pain, but for this to be the only dental office I've been to in my 40 yrs where I have days of pain from a simple cleaning - there's something wrong with the technique. So, although Brett himself has been fine I just can't take another one of those cleanings so I'll be getting a new dentist. read more

I had such a flawless experience at the office I am a UCSC student and am prepping for a bodybuilding bikini competition in July. I have been whitening with crest white strips for the competition but they just were not doing the trick. I met Kerri (Dr Johnson's wife) at the gym and she told me about the whitening system that her husband offers. I called the office and was expecting to have to book an appointment for the following week but they were able to see me the very next day. When I showed up to the office I did not have to wait to be seen they took me straight back and I was out of there in 15 minutes The woman who took my impressions was friendly and impressions are never fun but it was very bearable. The next day my trays were ready and they walked me through how to use them and were kind and friendly. Tonight is my first time using the whitening trays and I am very excited to see my results. I took my 6 year old son to see Dr. Johnson because of the yelp reviews stated the office is very kid friendly. When we were taken in the back for our appointment, my son was no very cooperative and did not want to open his mouth for the dental assistant. Everything she tried, he was not having it. Although he was being VERY difficult, the dental assistant was very rude, not understanding, and was arguing back with my six year old. Needless to say we didnt get ANYTHING done at the appointment and were out of the office within 15 minutes. I was just going to chalk it up to a bad experience and move on...however, I took my son to a pediactic dentist today and was told that my insurance benefits were used up for the year (cleaning, x-rays, etc.). I checked my insurance and sure enough I was billed by Brett Jackson for a full visit - they did NOT perform a cleaning on my child and did NOT perform x-rays as the billing stated. I am appalled at this horrible business practice and will be disputing the insurance claim. I will never recommend this dental practice and hope others will read this yelp and be warned. read more

I went to visit Brett because my tooth under my bridge was bothering me. After an exam he told me that he needed to do a root canal under my bridge and redo my bridge therefore he gave me an estimate. I decided to go down to san jose to the dentist that did my bridge for a second opinion. They did a full ex-ray of my bridge and found nothing wrong with the tooth under my bridge. I found out I had a sinus infection. Thank god I did not let him touch my $15,000 dollar bridge. I will never go there again read more

I've been visiting Brett Johnson as my dentist for about 15 years and I have to say my experience has been absolutely fantastic. With previous dentists I always felt like I was playing the "guilt game"... I'm sure you know what I'm talking about: the dentist makes you feel like a monster because your teeth aren't the whitest on the planet or that you don't brush 3 times day and floss hourly. Well Dr. Johnson doesn't make you feel that way! Don't get me wrong, he will give you the appropriate advice... but he does so in a manner that is very un-dentist like: kind and respectful. Truth be told there was a hygenist there that I didn't like as much, and asked to be moved to a different one. I was and I love the one I've got! (That hygenist isn't there anymore). Also a word of caution that I've learned when evaluating medical professionals/procedures... beware reviewers who say they have a "high threshold for pain"... my experience is that is rarely true. I've gone into a couple of medical procedures (not with Johnson) where I was expecting pain that was described as "worse than childbirth" from a person with just such a tolerance and it was easy as can be! read more

Going to any dentist can be daunting, and giving a rating of "as good as it gets" feels wrong when talking about dental work..But as far as daunting experiences, whether you're sensitive to it or not, I feel that Dr. Johnson does a fantastic job at avoiding most of the worst parts. I remember the first procedure I had here, a root canal, and I had zero pain and it only took what seemed like twenty minutes. I've been to at least ten different dentists, each multiple times, and this one is the best, and the only one who I really feel wants to help me and work with me. I am going to try to write another review since my first one did not make the cut and count for Dr. Johnson. Dr. Johnson is great, he does a wonderful job with crowns. I am hard to numb and have problems with the Novocaine, but he is able to numb my nerves. I have recommended Dr. Johnson to family and everyone has been really satisfied. The office is very accommodating if you have a dental emergence and I like that they open early in the morning so that I can go before work. I like that Dr. Johnson takes a conservative approach with the dental treatments and that when you do have work done is is painless and done right! read more

My family and I have been seeing Dr Johnson for years. I have never had a bad experience with him or his staff. My kids love going to see him and I don't mind the dentist anymore either.
