Funny tip jar.
Jacqui C.

After catching some breakfast at Young's Restaurant next door, I decided that I wanted a cold brew coffee from here. I could not read the writing on the thermos as it was fading on all of them, so it took me a while to find which one was half & half. The cold brew I ordered was pretty good! Next time I'm in the Durham campus district, I'll come back here for some coffee and maybe breakfast.

Sadly this establishment is dirty and the coffee and iced tea are overpriced and underwhelming.

Great, cheerful service. A cozy place to sit and cuddle up with your laptop, chat with a friend, or get hot coco with your kids.

Until Covid hit we were regulars at the Wednesday night open mic, an area hotspot for students and singer songwriters to show us what they can do. The freedom Café is a nonprofit whose proceeds go towards stopping human trafficking. A serious social issue that is on the rise in the United States, it comes in many forms ranging from forced labor to sex trafficking. There is an extensive menu for a Cafe of this nature , including many different types of coffees, pastries, and crapes. The crêpes options range from sweet to savory. I've tried both and can recommend them without reservation. If you want some good coffee, good food, good atmosphere, and lots of other amenities, choose The Freedom Cafe and put your money where your mouth is. It's a good cause, there's nothing to lose and everything to gain by dropping a few bucks here.

All of the workers are very laidback and kind - I love their monthly specials and that they serve their in house items in mugs and glasses. Huge applause for their grilled muffins, chai lattes, and raspberry chocolate crepes. LOVE the mission behind this place also, if you're in the neighborhood and you're spending the money anyways, why not do it somewhere with a purpose? 5 stars, no notes.

My daughter had been here a few times and loved picking up fresh produce during the season. Is there a better time to stop then on a cold, wintery, snowy, Thursday afternoon? We were so happy that we did. This is going to be a must stop for us on all our future pickups and drop-offs with our daughter. We love the charm and appeal of the main store. Knowing it was the off season, their stock of fresh produce wasn't as abundant ( my daughter's word) as it normally was. However, if you want jams, jellies, syrups, chips, pretzels, fresh eggs, varieties of pasta, beauty care products, and coffees, this is your place. They have a nice selection of fresh prepared food options to go like sandwiches, noodles, and soups. Plenty of healthy and organic choices. The prices were very reasonable considering I'm from New Jersey, especially the maple syrup. We noticed there was a nice outdoor patio with tables where customers could relax and enjoy a coffee, dessert, or a food item of their choice in better weather. The staff was very friendly and warm. Plenty of free parking. We can't wait to go back when the weather is better and the fresh produce options are ABUNDANT!

At first, I lamented the loss of Ballard's, my favorite campus bar, and scorned the arrival of a…read morewannabe chain that makes its money sloshing flavor shots into styrofoam cups of Red Bull, but after so many poor experiences with other coffee shops on campus and the corporatization of the university-run cafes, Aroma Joe's has made getting coffee in Durham worthwhile again. You won't find any locally roasted, fair trade or organic blends here, but you will find a strongly brewed, richly flavored, and un-burnt cuppa cawfee. Don't bother staying inside, though, unless you like your country/adult contemporary Pandora station turned up to 11 and your A/C system turned down to sub-arctic. The outdoor seating is great. Now, for the important part: espresso. As you are reading this, I am drinking a double espresso, poured over ice, which I purchased for the inexplicably low price of one dollar and twenty-five cents. While it's a long shot from Paris or New York, this is the place to be for espresso in the cultural mecca that is Durham, New Hampshire. Did I mention it's stronger than Hulk Hogan's biceps? My heart is palpitating with glee. Speaking of inexplicably priced, their bakery items are only 50 cents after 5pm. Aroma Joe's, I'm sorry I judged you before I got to know you. Your overall tackiness can no longer keep me from your great coffee and cheap bagels. My heart is *ahem* "a-quiver." Really though, I can't stop shaking.
