A Blessing Box is a small, often homemade box where people leave donated goods for others to pick…read moreup anonymously. Located in usually prominent areas, folks are filling them with items that will help those in need. There's everything from non-perishable food to toiletries There's no application, there's no forms, there's no red tape. If someone needs food for their family anytime they can go pick something out of the box, it's that simple. They're like those "Little Free Libraries" that have been popular for a while, but instead of offering books, they contain things like food, soap, diapers, and other necessities.  People who have items to donate fill (and refill) the boxes; people who need those items take them. "Take what you need, give what you can, and above all be blessed!" is what you will read on many of the boxes. The idea is thought to have originated with with Jessica McClard of Fayetteville, Arizona, who started her Little Free Pantry in March 2016. She got the idea from her neighborhood Little Free Library that she visited regularly. Today her Little Free Pantry website encourages others to set up their own Little Free Pantry with FAQs, legal advice, and even building plans for those who wish to build one themselves from scratch. To read more see: https://www.littlefreepantry.org/ I first became aware of The Blessed to Blessings Boxes for Baldwin County several months ago and joined their public Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/357603761862127/ Since then there has been a lot of activity and there's almost 30 of these boxes in our county alone. According to the Blessing Box/Little Free Pantry Locator online there's over 7000 of these listed around the country today. I think that's awesome and I justed wanted to pass this info along so others, who are so inclined, might get involved. Bottom line: Being involved is anything from dropping off something at your local box to building one of these near you. Either way, it's a blessing.

Seriously. Mad props to Habitat. They are awesome. They have given back so much to the community…read moreand have helped so many people. It is just awesome. If you have a chance, you totally need to volunteer with them. I was down here for the Collegiate Challenge. Awesome experience. Seriously, how many times can one say 'awesome' in a review? The crew that we worked with was ah-maz-ing! Ed, Joanne, & Wayne gave us such valuable information and helped turn the 17 of us into skilled carpenters that can hammer nails with the best of them, put windows in a house, and lay a roof down in four days! Four days! All we started with was the cement slab. What I really like about the program that they have is the homeowners (not necessarily of the house you are building) have to complete so many 'hands on' hours before they can move in. It was pretty neat to see a couple of them right there next to us. Don't know about Habitat? Here is a little information. Habitat builds houses in partnership with low and very low income families in need of decent shelter. To keep the cost of our houses affordable, Habitat uses the labor of thousands of volunteers. Habitat's partner families pay for their homes. Partner families invest more than money, they offer their own labor - sweat equity - into building their own homes and the homes of others. Their goal: To witness to the Word of God and the love of Jesus Christ for all persons through our words and actions. To build bridges among all economic and ethnic segments of our community by establishing new relationships, a sense of community and a renewed commitment to "the common good." To welcome participation from all individuals, groups, or organizations who desire to join with Pensacola Habitat for Humanity because of their shared concern and compassion for those in need. If you have the opportunity to do so, I suggest coming down and helping out. The program is awesome! There is a reason we have been coming down for 10+ years. Just being able to give back to the community is a great feeling. I wouldn't spend Spring Break any other way.
