We were also able to donate a bunch of game systems for the kids and their families to use, which was a HUGE hit. Second time I made a home-made BBQ feast for the families and spent a large amount of time playing Xbox 360 Kinect Sports with a 5 year-old cancer patient that whipped my tail. Some tips: - The kitchen is a hot mess. I usually bring a lot of my own tools and donate them to the organization - If you are going to buy pre-prepared food, so does everyone else, and these families are tired of anything involving casseroles, pasta or buckets of fried chicken. Think healthy, delicious, and outside the box. A lady from Louisiana came up to me after a meal, hugged me crying, and told me my food was the closest thing to home she had eaten in four months (and a lot of other people said "Thank god it isn't spaghetti") - I highly recommend prepping your food offsite - get your team ready to set the buffet and get the food ready to serve - it will make them feel useful - MAKE SURE that you coordinate with the head of house early enough - you can't underestimate the need for publicity at the house and at Vandy - They have a life-time supply of condiments, do some recon on the pantry and the refrigerated section before you make your menu, because if it comes in a bottle, they already have too much.

They are learning and improving every week and they are having fun with it. I especially love that Jennifer not only works through lessons books with them, but she has been incorporating ear training as well and helping them play popular songs on the radio by ear. This helps keep things fun and balanced for them. She is also not afraid to venture into new areas with the kids as they show interest. For example, my oldest recently joined a band, and Jennifer has been helping him work on his band songs as needed. He is also showing interest in songwriting, and she has been happy to help and encourage that. Additionally, my daughter has shown interest in playing and singing, but she is a little shy about it. Jennifer has been great at encouraging her and giving her the opportunity to sing and play. We have recommended Jennifer to several of our kids' friends whose parents have approached us about starting piano lessons. Each have told us how please they are with how lessons are going and how grateful they are for the recommendation. We love her and can't recommend her highly enough.

Bridges is a community center/ non-profit org for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing that also provides invaluable services including professional interpreting services (if you watch the news, you have likely seen Eric or Amy interpreting the Covid briefings), classes and resources for hearing parents of d/Deaf children, and classes/training for hearing people in the public sector (like me) who frequently come in to contact with d/Deaf clientele, patients, and customers. I have now taken ASL classes around the city and Bridges offered the best deal for classes and the opportunity to learn from Deaf teachers. Mike also patiently answered my questions and guided me to some great resources. I can't recommend Bridges enough!
