Old Fashioned. Last fancy drink of my 40s.
    Ricardo J.

We stopped in here for a quick drink and a break from the cold. The Balmoral is a famous hotel I have always wanted to see. Of note is that this is where JK Rowling stayed when she finished her Harry Potter series. And she commemorated the occasion by making a note of that event with a Sharpie on a bust in her hotel room. I believe she was reprimanded for that, but she is JK Rowling. I had an Old Fashioned and my lovely lady had a Balmoral Collins. She loved her drink but we both agreed mine was next-level delicious. The bar staff provided us with great service as they did their hotel guests. This was a nice way to help close out my 40s.

Wow! Gorgeous dining room, excellent food and service. From start to finish everything was perfect. Chic Champagne cart service, delicious gin cocktail. Amazingly fresh oysters. Steak tartare and Steak fries with endive Roquefort salad all so delicious! Our server from Greece was so sweet, as well as all staff. Superb!

This week, we enjoyed lunch at the Brasserie Prince to take advantage of their 'Dine Out To Help Out More' menu (a special menu they have running throughout September). We knew it would be a 3-course meal, however, what we didn't realise was that there would be 2 options per course to choose from. So, when we sat down and read the menu, the smartest option was to order both menu items from each course, so that we could have a taste of everything and avoid making the tough decision on what to have! The taste of each dish was amazing, exactly the quality you would expect from a restaurant within The Balmoral, but what we were most pleasantly surprised by during our dining experience was the portion size. Usually, high-end dining carries with it the stigma of small, unfilling plates, however, this could not be less the case with Brasserie Prince. When you consider that all 3 courses are only £20pp (normally £30pp), it's a steal! The service provided by each member of staff we encountered was impeccable, whether it was topping up our wine and water glasses in the restaurant, explaining parts of the menu to us that we weren't too sure about, or providing recommendations for drinks at the bar - we couldn't fault them and they most certainly made our trip even more memorable. It's what you'd expect from a tourist area. Mediocre overpriced food accompanied by disinterested staff

We were near a window but there's a view of the city from anywhere on the 4th floor. Service was outstanding. They were also able to accommodate my dairy allergy without any problem. The gazpacho was delicious and the stone bass was cooked perfectly. We really enjoyed the selection of ice cream and sorbet after the meal. Portions will seem a little small by American standards, tho. We thought everything was perfectly prepared and elegantly served. We regret that we weren't able to linger with a cup of coffee or after dinner drink as we had to make our way to the Edinburgh Tattoo. Maybe next time. Service was always prompt and professional. We would definitely love to return.

I went for afternoon brunch in the form of eggs florentine and a clean and green juice. I loved the juice; it was fresh and zesty, and a great pick me up. - So good that I'd slurped up every sip before the arrival of food. Oops! The eggs florentine was a decent eggs on bread offering. Although I have to say I like my eggs runnier, and the Hollandaise could have been a little thicker. Still, that's a matter of preference and, with fresh smoked salmon on the side, this made for an adequate brunch. I've no real complaints in terms of service but our waiter had gone to get dessert menus for us and had forgotten and by that point, we'd had the chance to change our minds and resist the lure of the fruit scone. Also, it would have been nice to have been offered table water. Forth Floor was a-okay for brunch but I don't think it's got anything on the plethora of independent spots available in the city. For that reason, I think I'd opt for one of those next time.

The walls are stone but they have been whitewashed beautifully and then hung with fin de cicle French advertising posters. The service was impeccable without being clingy. They have a short but very nice wine list. We went with the red table wine (house wine) and it was very good. If you are there for lunch or before 7 pm they an excellent play du jour special. We were there later so we started with the escargot. Very good version of this dish and came out piping hot served with a very good baguette (what else do you expect at a French restaurant?). I had the salmon in a fume blanc sauce with crayfish. The salmon was perfectly cooked and the sauce was excellent. Both dishes came with very very good potatoes. The wife had a sea bass which was served with veggies, olives and balsamic reduction l. Truly amazing. They have a very nice list of desert and after diner wines (sauterne anyone ?) as well as aperitifs. But we were just too full as the portions were very filling. This is a gem of a restaurant. Highly recommend

The staff is rude, dismissive, and only wants to move you out as fast as possible so they can turn the table. Food either takes forever; or comes out all at once when you aren't ready -- depending on how busy the staff is pushing other people out of the restaurant. There are a few solid places on Grassmarket and this is among the options at the bottom.
