very very French!
Kevin F.

We must have had everything on the menu from duck to frog to beef! However, I, with my sensitive gut, elected to forgo and instead concentrate on the green bean salad and soup! Absolutely fantastic as were the starters. Our table of 5 was very cozy but the ambiance was inviting and joyous! Someone at the firm we visited gave us a "bum steer" and told us no reservations were needed! Wrong! Highly highly recommended. The restaurant somehow accommodated us but with an hour and one-half to dine, but they stretched it out to another hour on top of that! How wonderful! We had delicious port, wines, espresso to top it all off with crepes Suzette! Not crazy expensive but what a wonderful atmosphere and did I mention the service? Spectacular!!!!

When in Edinburgh eat local! What a great spot we just so happened to stumble upon. Without a reservation (would recommend) we were able to snag a cute spot on the patio outside. The food was absolutely brilliant. Flavorful, variety and truly delicious. The staff was friendly and very helpful with wine recommendations. It was truly a pleasant surprise and I would definitely go back.

Delicious and affordable!!! Love the ambiance, Lively and people seemed to be enjoying the place as well. Service was fast and effective. We only had to wait for 5 minutes despite not having a reservation and despite the restaurant being extremely busy!

I felt food was amazing and the food came very quick. They have an amazing deal on 1,2,3 course meals which is super cheap. The service was fantastic especially with it being busy all the time and you have to book ahead of time to get a seat. The staff are lovely. The ambiance for me was fine, it's a very small space with many tables around. But overall AMAZING!!!!

My favorite restaurant in Edinburgh. The lunch specials are delicious and very reasonably priced. Every course of the meal was delicious. Great wine and whiskey offerings too. Attentive service and cozy atmosphere. A true gem.

Loving her medium well steak.

We arrived on a rainy day without any reservations. Our hosted was gracious to let us know that she could accommodate for us but only for 1 hr sit down. That was very appreciated since I had 2 starving young teenagers. The service was great, the people friendly, and the food was good! Price was better than expected . Thanks for everything again!

Amazing french food for an extremely good price! Come for lunch and it's 5.9 for one course and 7.9 for two. The waiters are extremely friendly and helpful, and the layout of the restaurant is quite nice for a quiet / casual dinner. We ordered the steak frites and mussel frites, and both were amazing we had no problem finishing all of it. The peppercorn sauce that came with the steak frites were amazing and made the fries extremely addicting. The white wine sauce that the mussels were soaked in were delicious as well.

While the waiters were very nice and the food came quickly, I found the portions were small and the quality was lacking. Salad and (a couple) pieces of salami were provided before choosing the set menu. The price was very good (£13 for three courses) however the portions sizes seemed to have suits 10 year olds. The steak was slightly over cooked, however the sauce was delicious. The French soup was also very tasty, but yet again could have been gulped down in three and could have done with more cheese. The mousse also lacked flavour and remained very bland. Overall, it's cheap and worth the money paid, but I'll happily pay more for better quality.

Free starters

MWAH I wanna give this restaurant a kiss it was so perfect. When you arrive they give you free olives, salami, salad and bread! The olives were in this delicious marinade and the salami was very nice. Then I got the French onion soup and oh boy was that broth scrumptious. I ended with some steak frites and the pricing was very generous for a nice cut of meat. The atmosphere was so cute with wine served in fun cups and a burning candle. The staff were so nice and helpful and effecient. I cannot emphasize how reasonable the pricing is!

Mademoiselles - coq au vin for two! (LOOK AT ALL THAT BREAD).

It's endlessly frustrating that French restaurants - outside of France - are often over-priced and over-laden with total wan... err... less-than-humble types. Out on a girly day with my pal for her wedding dress fitting, the designer recommended lunch at Chez Jules; just a quick jaunt down Thistle Lane to Hanover Street for perfectly-priced, relaxed bistro goodness. It's super cute inside and the service was spot on. We were swiftly seated with entirely redundant menus: owing to the fab blackboard lunch special... 1-course £5.90, 2-courses £7.90 and 3-courses £9.90 for good ol' Francophile faves like Steak Frites and French onion soup. Within seconds we had a bowl of breads and butter + salami, olives, pickles and a salad. Oh, how I miss dining in Europe! (my thighs - meanwhile - wholeheartedly disagree)... Moments later our drinks orders were on the table + another bowl of bread owing to us wolfing down the first. We each opted for a single course of the coq au vin... though by bite number 3... we'd already resolved to upgrade to a 2-course. The dishes are hearty and cleverly pre-made, making them full of rich flavour and out in minutes. We both added coffees and the crème caramel though, perhaps next time we'd go for the chocolate mousse (or other alternative). A perfect lunch and far more cultured than our original plan for a burger and chips.

Incredibly noisy. Food could be a lot better. Our servings were cold. Embra could do better.

We really enjoyed this restaurant. Very lively! Enjoyed our starter which was onion soup. I got the steak and husband chicken!

Grassmarket, Old Town

Truly a superb dining experience in this small restaurant on the grass market…read more The ambiance is just beautiful with small rooms in this ancient building. The walls are stone but they have been whitewashed beautifully and then hung with fin de cicle French advertising posters. The service was impeccable without being clingy. They have a short but very nice wine list. We went with the red table wine (house wine) and it was very good. If you are there for lunch or before 7 pm they an excellent play du jour special. We were there later so we started with the escargot. Very good version of this dish and came out piping hot served with a very good baguette (what else do you expect at a French restaurant?). I had the salmon in a fume blanc sauce with crayfish. The salmon was perfectly cooked and the sauce was excellent. Both dishes came with very very good potatoes. The wife had a sea bass which was served with veggies, olives and balsamic reduction l. Truly amazing. They have a very nice list of desert and after diner wines (sauterne anyone ?) as well as aperitifs. But we were just too full as the portions were very filling. This is a gem of a restaurant. Highly recommend

The staff is rude, dismissive, and only wants to move you out as fast as possible so they can turn the table. The seating was comfy, and the restaurant was clean and bright, with several excellent options. The restaurant is a higher end, but they have a lovely lunch/bar menu they allowed us to order from even though it was dinner time. My husband opted for a burger, and I got the Caesar salad. We also had breakfast here every morning. It was delicious, with so many options. If you have the time to order something off the menu, I'd suggest an omelet.

It was beautiful indeed and the service was good. At first glance at the menu I was a little disappointed because I was in the mood for brunch type of food, but settled on the sourdough bread with crab. The crab was smothered in butter, but tasted so good...and Edinburgh had some of the best sourdough bread I've experienced! The menu was a bit sophisticated for our teens, but there was a kids menu for them to order from. They enjoyed an order of fish sticks and french fries. If I were to come back I'd probably go for dinner over lunch since I think their menu is better suited for that, but overall was a lovely meal.

We were finally taken in by the two course for 18.95 set menu as neither of us was ready for a three course ensemble and the price compared to much less renowned restaurants in sleepy Oxford. I was a little concerned about how pretentious the place would be, as this is the Scotch Malt Whisky Society after all, with a private members club upstairs. However, the interior was quite modest, with an eclectic collection of modern art work and open curtains allowing for just the right amount of natural light coming through. We went around 6:15 so it was quite quiet when we arrived. The staff was a little bit somber and standoffish but the service was reasonably quick. The food was actually quite impeccable in terms of quality with seasonal items dominating the dishes. My first course was a thick and creamy Pumpkin and Parmesan soup which was more like a smooth puree with pickled pumpkin along with bits of hazelnuts and porcini mushrooms. My lovely boyfriend went for the soused mackeral with white crab meat, carrots, and dill. He reported the mackeral as being fantastic. For the main we both had the Serrano ham with sweet potato puree and a crunchy blackened fig which complemented the crisp ham exterior perfectly. The glass of white wine we had was glorious as well with the ham. Overall a well-thought out menu and an atmosphere to which I couldn't in good conscience give 3 stars. Although everything was truly delicious, the portions were almost appalling. If we hadn't been lured out by a friend for an impromptu appetizer right beforehand, we would have been left almost completely starving. Slight less empty space on my main dish would have left everyone satisfied.

It is probably the best service I've ever received at any restaurant ever. Incredibly welcoming & professional & knowledgeable. The somm was the best somm I've ever interacted with. The depth of knowledge was outstanding. The food? Unreal. We ordered from the 3-course tasting menu. Me: 1st course - Pittenweem Lobster - Outstanding & wonderfully deshelled; 2nd course - Warwick Farm sirloin - incredible cook on the meat; 3rd course - Sticky toffee souffle - really fun & playful! In addition, we were offered 3 amuse-bouches, and had the opportunity to purchase a mignardise + tea or coffee. Plenty of food. And everything was beautiful. Pictures attached. Dress code was smart casual. I saw another Yelper say to not wear jeans. Jeans are fine. I rocked the jeans + jacket & tie + chelsea boots. Fit right in. Worth a visit. I'd go back, but only after replenishing the coffers.
