First of all, holy pool tables!!! This is the place to go if you are looking to play pool. It is across the street from where Forward Madison plays and I can imagine it is a hot spot for pre and post-game fun. They do have a parking lot located behind the building; however, there is not a public entrance from the lot into the business. I was here for a private event, which was held upstairs, but food and beverage was catered in-house. We had excellent service during the event and when venturing down to the bar. There was a nacho/taco bar available - the chicken and guac were absolutely amazing. I would 100% come back here for their taco special based on what I tried :) The space itself has a great layout and easy to find, even if you are not familiar with the area. I definitely plan on visiting again next time I find myself in Madison. read more

I stopped in for dinner as it was near my hotel, I got cheese curds and the Boss Burger, no onions. Came here for Wednesday trivia at 7pm. Also on Thursday. Hybrid through Discord app. Well appointed, interesting trivia questions covering anything and everything! Thought provoking! Had a peach cobbler sour, which was good. And the spiced cherry mule which was sooo good! Nice cherry front with a kick of lingering ginger. Amazing! I tried the cheesy tortilla soup which was like a tomato mini meatball stew. Disappointing. Bartenders were attentive but I could overhear them trying to push close to expired menu items of beers. Smashburger was worth the $5 deal, overall food isn't going to win any culinary awards but it's pretty cheap and effective bar food in my opinion. At least once when our group ate on the outside patio, someone with "mental issues" from the street tried to approach the restaurant and the server very quickly got a manager who promptly escorted the person out of the premises. You pick up the balls at the bar and just pay when you're done so you don't have to worry about quarters. They only had one dark beer (Guiness) on tap, but I understand those aren't everyone's cup of tea. TVs had the Packers game on and there was a decent smattering of folks drinking and watching the game. Bathrooms were clean. I would definitely come back here to play pool. read more

I've definitely been here before many years ago and I feel like this visit was a bit of a miss. Got the chipotle BBQ burger with fries. I don't know if the burger patty was too small or the bun is too big but they are way mismatched and no one wants a burger where you have mouthfuls of just bun. Some of the onion rings on top were cold, though the patty was warm. Patty was a bit too lean, and there wasn't enough sauce so it felt very under par all around. The manger Boyd was very hostile and pushy. I specifically asked him if mayonnaise was on my burger and he replied "no". And when I asked another person after I took a bite they replied "yes" i so then asked Boyd why he said no when I ask and he insisted on giving me the facts on how mayonnaise is made, and said to me "oh do you not like eggs or something, because that's all mayonnaise is made out of". And I actually have an allergic reaction to mayonnaise, which is why I asked in the first place. I feel disrespected and taken advantage of. He should NOT be a manager at all. I have consistently had positive experiences at the Brass Ring. Whether eating in or ordering takeout, the food is delicious and the service is reliable. I've been with a couple of my pickier friends and the servers have always been exceptionally friendly and helpful, really wanting our party to enjoy ourselves and our meal. After checking the Brass Ring's menu I ordered the cajun chicken tenders for takeout... omg. They were delicious with a bit of a kick and a tangy ranch sauce for dipping. Definitely a step or two up from fast food! The previous time I had ordered the salmon salad -- Very different mood but just as tasty and well-prepared. Since the cajun tenders were an appetizer on the menu, they didn't come with a side like the main dishes, so I also ordered cheese curds since it had been a while since I had indulged in this Wisconsin specialty. I was impressed by the crispy outside and melty inside of the Brass Ring's curds. My husband ordered a burger and was pleased with his choice. I won't lie, I grabbed a few fries from his plate and they were top notch! Our dodgeball league is sponsored by the Brass so plus one star already. Every evening, the same staff appear to be working which must be a sign that the place is good to their people. Our waitress is always friendly and quick to bring around pitchers of ice water for us. Good tap list, they have seas of pool tables and darts to keep you entertained. Though, don't try to disturb those seriously pool league peeps, they could probably knock you out with their billiard cases. We've only gotten apps here and they have all been good pub fares. They claim the onion rings are breaded in house, but they are shaped like their SYSCO counter-part and are otherwise unremarkable in taste. Fun place to go that's not super far from downtown! On of the major attractions here is their pool hall. They have an above average number of pool tables available for rent. Space is nice and the tables are nice as well. We came here for trivia on Wednsday at 7 pm, and it was a fun time! They are part of league trivia but I liked this locations the most so far because they actually display the questions on TVs so you don't have to worry about it if you can't hear the announcers too well. Get the Boss Burger - order it rare just to be safe... it'll probably show up medium rare to medium. But I still find this mostly acceptable as most bars in Madison cook burgers to shoe leather no matter how you order them. The chicken tenders - wow... I think they are scratch made in house. It's a big shareable portion. The drinks are derivable. I've had decent Old Fashioneds and good Martini's. Good selection of beers... and nice selection of affordable call booze. The hubby and I were in Madison for a few days and we didn't feel like going far for lunch and we came apon this restaurant /bar and boy am I glad we did. I ordered the Boss burger and it was hands down the best burger I've ever had. The beer cheese on the burger is THE BEST beer cheese I've ever had also. I never finish a whole burger and you can bet your a$$ I finished this one. To make it even better it was on an amazing pretzel bun.  Boss Burger* A 1/3 lb. hand-pattied Hereford beef patty, topped with house made 3 Sheeps Pilsner and Hook's aged cheddar beer cheese sauce, applewood smoked bacon, and crispy fried haystack red onions on a toasted pretzel bun. My go to spot to play pool with friends. There are about 9 pool tables available to rent by the hour. I usually call in to make sure there are some pool tables available so I don't have to wait, but it's usually packed for sure on a Friday or Saturday night. Their food is also really good. Their French Dip and spicy Jamaican Jerk Boneless Wing Skewers are two of my favorites on their menu. I've had their burgers and bison burgers, nothing special. I came here on a Saturday evening around 6pm to play pool with some friends. We went to the counter and got added to the list for a table. The system seems a little confusing, as four of the eight pool tables didn't seem to be in use, but they were apparently claimed. We were told we were next on the list. A couple of groups left, so we went back to the counter to see if they were ready for us. This time we were told that we were now second on the list, after they got the tables that had cleared set up for their parties. At this point, I decided I should eat while we were waiting; friends insisted that the food here was not very good, and upon checking out the menu, I found they were also not vegan friendly. So I headed over to black locust and got food there while my friends waited for our pool table. About 45 minutes after we first arrived to Brass Ring, we got a table. And we had a great time playing. I think it was something like $10 per hour to rent the table, which was a little high, but I guess worth it for all of us to have entertainment for an hour. Wish they had some vegan food and a more transparent system for the pool tables. Otherwise decent place to spend an evening. read more

I've been to the Brass Ring for everything from a drink to watching a game to dinner and it's been enjoyable all around. My last visit was for lunch and I went for my go-to sandwich, the Smokestacker. A pile of very thinly sliced smoked turkey + crispy bacon + provolone is a great start, but when you add the chipotle mayo you've got one of my favorite turkey sandwiches in town. Add to that some delicious fries (which I also recommend you put the mayo to use on) and you've got one happy lady. I also want to give a shout-out to their BBQ pulled pork on a ciabatta roll that they had available during the Badger basketball final - if you see that come up as a special, it's a good choice if you want to mix it up from their regular menu. The only snafu I've experienced with them was the night of the basketball final - there was a lot of confusion with saving seats and moving tables back and forth - but in the end it worked out more or less, albeit our group ending up at tables on opposite sides of the dining area. If I end up there for another big game, I'll just be sure to ask for a manager to see what the situation is when we get there to avoid confusion. read more
