After living…read moreoutside of the country for two years, I felt out of practice and wanted to bring my muscle memory back. Since Fine Art Bartending offers free retakes for graduates (for life), I was able to sign up again and brush up on my skills! I would like to pass on my glowing feedback about Mr. Grant because he's such a great teacher. He told us about real-life stories, shared tips, and got us to practice cool tricks from his experience in the industry. Yes, the theory and information in the textbook are extremely helpful and good to know, but the things that we learned directly from Grant that you don't find in the textbook are also extremely valuable. The course is different from when I last took it. It was simplified, and we got to practice 18 cocktails which were the most popular and common ones you will most likely need to make if you land a job as a bartender. My favorite part of the course is when we did a mock shift where we practiced what it would actually feel like taking orders, printing tickets, and making the cocktails while talking to the customers (our peers). I just submitted my resume and cover letter for feedback, which is so amazing that this is offered now to support us on our job search journey. Thanks, Fine Art Bartending, for all that you do!

Yesterday (Sunday February 23), I took the four hour "Introduction to Bartending" course. The…read moreoriginal price of the course is $125, which is unfortunately out of my budget (high cost of living, low paying job, student loans, etc etc), but I had a voucher from Social Shopper for $39, which the school accepted without any issues. I like trying and learning new things, and I like to drink (wine and cocktails, not beer), so this course appealed to me, and hey, only $40! Jeroemie was a great instructor, and I found the course very interesting and informative, as well as fun. In addition to learning how to make over a dozen drinks (including mojitos, one of my favourites), we had a good basic overview of bar equipment, proper measuring and mixing techniques, and a brief history of the different kinds of alcohols, as well as the differences in quality and brands. Some of the alcohols we learned about were gin, vodka, tequila, and rum, to name a few. The class was very hands on, and not just four hours of boring lecture. After Jeroemie would explain and show us how to make the drinks, everyone then had the opportunity to practice it themselves. Instead of real alcohol we used colored water to represent the various alcohols and mixers, but Jeroemie did make a few real drinks for us to sample. In addition to learning how to make several cocktails (I totally want to have a cocktail party now!), I walked away with basic knowledge of the different alcohols. I had a great time, and highly recommend this course for anyone who wishes to expand their knowledge of alcohol and mixed drinks, or just learn how to make yummy drinks. (It'll probably also save you money in the long run, as going out to drink in Vancouver is bloody ridiculous.)

The three dishes that we made were pork baos, dan dan noodles, and wontons with chilli sauce. These were all staple foods that I grew up eating in a Chinese family but it was quite interesting to make them with a western fusion twist. If you don't know how to cook, do not worry because I certainly don't either. Dan, the owner, led our class with his assistant Kait. Both were very helpful, engaging in conversation, and accommodating. Dan did a really good job of explaining the origins of each dish, bringing in his own experiences and life stories with his family which I really appreciate as this added a personal touch. He stresses the use of organic ingredients and often shared with us where to buy these common items. Once you walk in, you store your personal items in the cupboard provided. Then you write your name on an erasable name tag and put your apron on. Everyone is involved in the cooking process, from washing vegetables to chopping garlic and green onions. There was just a right amount of time to cook but also socialize with one another. You can also consume alcohol while cooking. I found that the assistant often prepared most of the meat, so some of the hardest parts of the recipes were already accounted for. The pork bao, for example, only required us to make the bun part but I do not recall preparing the pork or marinating it. Everything tasted delicious and looked so colourful that the plating easily looked like restaurant quality, even if you just tossed them all together on a dish. We used a lot of garlic though so a lot of us still came to work with garlic breath the next day! Still, I think my favourite dish must have been the dan dan noodles because of the peanut sauce. Feeling very lucky to have tried my first cooking class through work and hope to be back another time to cook another cuisine!

The girl at the front desk speaks Mandarin and decent English. They have a couple different rooms and you have to sign a waiver before going in. They need your ID (driver license or passport) normally waivers only ask your age (maybe birth date), name, cell, email, etc. but not necessarily an ID number. Felt a bit odd but it's alright, however, the had another opinion (example) as your ID..they asked your SIN. WHAT??!!! Who asks that? That's illegal. Unless employed or tax return, NO ONE not even job interviews or school can ask you for such information. I was skeptics and didn't sign the waiver until I get there. They are pretty lax when explaining about the waiver (actually they didn't explain at all, just said read this through ok fill it out and walked away) not rude but could be a bit more welcoming for sure. Due to Covid they are "out of items" except bottles. Fun and a decent little workout but a bit disappointed that they have nothing but bottles. I mean if you are still opened, you should still have some options. You pay $10 per person going in then you pay whatever you're bringing in or buy from them to smash. Price varies. Take about 30mins and ended pretty fast. I'm guess each "$10" is 30mins? If you finish before 30mins and want more bottles, you can go to the front desk to purchase more. Washroom is decently clean but super dark (everywhere is dark) black walls, some lights not working, and one stall wasn't work either (meaning only one stall left. Parking lot right outside though. I'd say it's really fun but with the distance, price, and the fact that's there's only bottles..I might go there after a long while. Definitely not a place I'd go often or recommend to everyone.

And I obviously wasn't expecting it to be super nice for a warehouse to break things, but even the washrooms weren't clean and didn't have toilet paper, etc. There was unfortunately only one person at the desk and they also run a photography business, so even though we made a reservation, we still had to wait almost 40 minutes after our start time. They gave us an extra keyboard to smash due to the delay. The PPE wasn't very protective I'd suggest wearing thicker shoes/boots. I'm still giving it three stars since it is a great idea and the price was fair due to the groupon, but I wouldn't come back to pay full price.

We did the Thai class and made shrimp spring rolls, beef satay skewers, and green curry chicken. It was so much fun and it tasted amazing. Our instructor Raf would demonstrate the prep and then the cooking of the dish while we watched him cook and gave tips and teach things like proper cutting technique, to heating the oil correctly and when to add to maximize things like flavour and not to overcook things. Once he finished it was our turn to prepare and cook the dish (while being supervised and given tips and guidance while we cooked)and then when we finished we went and sat in the dining room and got to taste our creation. Each course we did one at a time then ate it and then proceeded to the next course. If you want to learn cooking techniques and some pointers from a real pro and have some fun I highly recommend this. After a lot of research, The Dirty Apron stood out as the clear winner. I reached out nearly two months in advance only to find they were fully booked on our one available evening. I moved on and kept searching, but about a week later they contacted me to say they had a cancellation. I jumped on it immediately! From start to finish, the process was seamless. They offered a very wide variety of menu options, which made it easy to find choices that accommodated several dietary restrictions and varying preferences across our group. Communication was straightforward and stress-free. Day of, the location was easy to find and they were completely set up and ready when I arrived a few minutes early. The onsite team, Monica, our servers, and our chef were all outstanding. The structure of the experience was perfect for a team event: the chef would teach us one course, we'd break out to make it together, then sit down and eat what we'd just prepared before heading back to learn the next one. The pacing was spot-on. Our chef was engaging, educational, and fun without being over the top. Throughout the evening and through the next day, my entire team raved about the food quality, the hands-on instruction, and the overall atmosphere. After dessert, none of us wanted to leave, even after four full hours together. For a leadership team that had never done an offsite before, this was the ideal bonding experience. Highly, highly recommend The Dirty Apron for corporate team events. We got lucky with that cancellation, and it ended up being the highlight of our trip to Vancouver!

As a manager of a seasoned tech team, I'm always hunting for engaging challenges--and this is hands down the gold standard in Vancouver. We brought a group of 10, and I was so impressed by the intentional design. Usually, with a large group, you run into "too many cooks in the kitchen," but the abundance of clever, parallel challenges meant our group could split into smaller teams and stay fully engaged from start to finish. The production value is incredible; the environment is so responsive that it feels like genuine magic. What really moved us, though, was the hospitality. The Find and Seek staff went out of their way to include a subtle nod to a specific fandom as part of a farewell for someone leaving our team. Their thoughtfulness and organization made the moment work perfectly, taking the experience to a heartwarming personal level we didn't expect. It was fantastic to see everyone collaborating on such creative, tactile puzzles--we are so glad we picked this creative team to host us. They didn't just provide an escape room; they helped us create a lasting memory. 10/10!
