Interesting that the upstairs hall was completly renovated a couple years ago, brought up to code, and has a vibrant loyal crowd. Might not be everyone's cup of tea. So be it. Down home, local and unpretentious. read more

I've always enjoyed the low key and intimate appeal of this little club tucked within Mt Pleasant. The decor is dark and muted with two levels often offering a different vibe and providing an excellent venue for all types of performances. I only tend to come here for performances, but given the opportunity I would love to come here more often. There's never any attitude here and is always a cause of good times. read more

A local with a real local feel! AnZA (Australian/New Zealand) is a members bar, but is open to the public and has regular club nights. Amazing staff, great venue for hire and it's open late. Check out Open Dex, my fav night! Pool table, darts and a tv downstairs - oh and did I mention a fireplace?!! Halloween is one of their biggest nights, it's THE place to go where EVERYONE dresses up! Get there early though, there is a line every year - and the line is there ALL NIGHT! read more

I totally dig this place, both the top and bottom floors. I've been to quite a few shows on the top floor and have generally been pleased with the atmosphere, seating and reasonably priced liquor though I'm not sure if they have a fully stocked bar upstairs. Nothing on tap and good luck getting yourself some fancy mixed drink. Don't get much into those types of drinks myself but it's definitely something to consider. As for the shows, they have a pretty good mix going on. I dunno, check out their regularly updated website for the deets of what's coming up. I actually quite like the downstairs with its nicely sized pool table and lots of dart boards to play on. It's all very cozy and has a good mix of peeps depending on the night you go on. Has a definite cool-grandpa's-basement-vibe going on. And yes, they have drink specials which are usually in the $4.50 range. On a completely unrelated note, the other "Tim L" who reviewed this place is like at least 20% less awesome than me. Prolly more like 40. read more

Poorly operated and managed facility. Cleanliness is a serious issue. Facility requires a makeover. Mobility and Access issues are a non-concern for the "manager". The "not-for-profit status" is a red herring. This place is a sad stinky dump. Formal inspection is required immediately by professional, responsible authorities before someone is injured. read more

I am usually hard pressed to find a place that serves a cider on tap that is not Strongbow. Et voila, said non-Strongbow draught cider for $5.50, in a place that feels like a cross between your parent's rec room and a rugby club? Yes please! Darts and billiards fans rejoice, here is a very casual atmosphere where you can go out and socialize over drinks without being ogled by members of the opposite sex and without feeling like you need to be dressed to the nines. Perfect place for a casual evening to chat with friends over a beer/cider or two and show off your stellar (or significantly less-than-stellar, in my case) hand-eye coordination and skill at classic pub games. My experience here was only based on the downstairs bar (which sounds like the better bet, based on other reviews) but I definitely rate it worth a return visit. read more

I like the unpretentious vibe on both levels of this place! Watch hockey, play pool, play darts, or just drink the night away downstairs. See a show, support local film or a fundraiser, or dance your ass off upstairs. All the things. The upstairs has been renovated and is much more enjoyable as a result. Great stage, dance floor and a lot of seating for whatever happens to be going on in there. Bars both upstairs and down for most of your drinking needs. I always find the bartenders to be really friendly. Who doesn't enjoy buzzing in downstairs? And who doesn't think of the wardrobe to Narnia every time they go upstairs via the bathroom from downstairs? Robots, that's who. read more

The notorious rivals of Australia and New Zealand have combined powers as the Australia-New Zealand Association to operate this funky little venue. I haven't graced these halls as a regular member (anyone can secure membership for $10), but I've attended a fun reggae night here. The club features a decent stage with a large dance floor and ample ring-side seating. Drinks service is consistent and, if I recall, reasonably priced. The sound is good and easily fills the hall. As the venue sits at the division of east and west, events tend to attract an eclectic crowd from the neighboring regions. The events page of the website is pretty chock-a-block. From pub quizzes to chili cook-offs, the Anza club offers Vancouver a bit of a different night out. read more

Ended up here for a show. Odd crowd, crappy beer, and it felt like the place would collapse if someone sneezed a little to hard. However, it's still a great little venue for a live show. It's big enough you can get a crowd in, but not too big that it looses intimacy. read more

I am not Australian, or from New Zealand, but the Anza makes me feel welcome nonetheless. I love any place that requires me to buzz to get in. I feel special. I come for the pub quiz once a month (used to be the last Wednesday of the month, but is changing to the last Friday) and love the low key vibe. The pub quiz and the pub itself aren't super popular, so you always can get a great seat and reasonably priced drink before getting your nerd on. They don't have any food except for some chips in a vending machine, but they don't mind if you order pizza to the bar or bring in takeout. read more

The line for the nearby craft brewery was too long so we buzzed in to try our luck here. The downstairs is like hanging out in your friend's parents' basement. It's chill and unpretentious, has no decor to speak of but the booths, couches and chairs are quite comfy and it's good for groups. You can play pool, darts, and old school arcade games and the best part is that they're all free. You may have to wait in line for the pool table though. The selection of beer and cider on tap is limited but I was pleasantly surprised to see a few craft breweries featured such as Phillips and Hoyne. The crowd is very mixed and mostly unpretentious which is a refreshing change from the brewery next door. Come here when you don't want to go home just yet but want to hang out in someone else's basement. If you keep your expectations low, this place will exceed them! For such a small location, this bar/social club was really fun to visit. The staff and regular patrons are really nice and friendly. The atmosphere is really comfortable and felt homey. The place has lots of nice seating areas. Although they do not offer food, you can order food to be delivered there from several nearby restaurants. read more

I ended up being the "popcorn girl" at the Sex and the Circus party that some of my burlesque friends were putting on. Who wants extra butter?? Giggity giggity!! The venue is perfect for a little stage show of burlesque, at this particular event, being carnival themed you had to buy tickets to get a drink. It was five tickets for a single, four tickets for beer and wine. The BF bought 12 tickets, for ten bucks, so he had two beers and I had a glass of wine. Not too shabby for $10! I was at the popcorn station selling bags of popcorn for two tickets each. The organizers of the show brought in a bunch of extra chairs so that people could be seated during the show, which included a mime, a strong woman, a bearded lady, and some freaks. The sound system was not the best, but that could have also been due to the fact most of the songs were being played through a laptop or an ipod. I guess this review probably doesn't help much in telling you what a regular night at the Anza club is like, but more of a review of the event that I went to at the club. read more

There aren't a lot of bars or social clubs anywhere in North America that are 'conveniently' located right next to a police station and could be more fun and relaxed as this place. Like the posts before, you don't have to be Australian or a Kiwi to be a part of this place and enjoy its atmosphere. Almost every night of the week, this dingy looking little club house hosts events. From pub quiz night to open mic night, this place is reminiscent of an actually enjoyable house party that you went to with you friends back in high school. There is cover most nights, but it's cheaper than imaginable and the place is roomy and laid back enough that it almost seems worth your pocket change to give this place a try. The place looks like a bit of a dump from the outside, but that's admittedly part of its charm. Once you're inside, it's got about 2 floors of rooms and open space and a bar with seating and decor that looks like your grandparent's den back in the day- comfy flower patterned couches, wood panel walls and a semi-decent piano. Think of that Lady Ga Ga 'Just Dance' music video and you'll get the jist. The place has great talent and be sure to check out open mic night on Thursday or Friday? (the particlar night escapes my memory) Either way, local bands come and play and while most of the same people frequent the stage, they always come with new material that's pretty nice to unwind to. Drinks are cheap, people are hipsterish but friendly and welcoming and most of all the live music nights bring some of the best of Vancouver's live talent out as well as a demonstration that the city has more to it than being of scenic beauty, Whistler, and high-street brand clad folks. The Main Street community are frequent patrons but it's a welcoming sight to see how a good community group has come together in celebration for its own little neighborhood. The cops are parked outside but have never made a fuss. The noise is reasonable even in a residential area and for some odd reason, the VPD are actually friendly as well. Either something is tainting the water these people drink, or the ANZA just brings the best out of people looking for a good time. read more

We went there for a halloween event. We were a group of four girls and two guys. They kept us in line for more than an hour in the cold while one of the staff kept sending in people that were behind us in line in before us. We left after we realized what they were doing, very disrespectful and bad business practice. A perfectly unassuming space that could one night host a raging open mic, and the next a screening of a locally made movie, or a dart tourney, or a burlesque show. This two level gem is hidden, and for good reason. The bottom floor is literally someone's basement (there are old photo albums) which on Thurdays holds an open mic that could see some of the city's best emerging hip hop artists to acoustic rock to amazing piano solos by senior citizens. For $4 there is no better deal in town. The ANZA isn't always a crazy party, but it is always unique and BS free. read more

so tonight the first Saturday night of February was ridiculous. the doorman was really shallow. he kept saying that they were in full capacity but he kept being chicky and funny and even said that some people are priority. overall everything was messed up its so unfair when people assume the worst of anything and by people i mean the people involved with the event. that was shit standing outside for two hours and the door man is being a dick head straight up and being all personal. no stars are deserved for this event no lie read more
