At this time we were trying to obtain rehab for 2-3 weeks, so care team, meeting was pre mature. When I arrived at meeting, there were 3 administrators, including Randy(VP of Dallas and Houston locations), Crystal (vp of Houston division), Jennifer (director of marketing), and the director of nursing (new to the job 2 weeks, therefore had minor contact with my mom). They wanted to discuss admission to assisted living, even though we had only recently admitted to hospital. 1. Told if mom needs more than 8 meds there was an upcharge. This included vitamins, Tylenol, hand lotion, and could include chapstick because she could eat it (said by Crystal). 2. There is an upcharge if she needs assistance to toilet. And a different upcharge if she needs assistance to dining hall. 3. I suggested 24 hr nursing provided by a licensed nursing agency that I would pay for myself. I would still pay upcharge "in case they didn't show". Though if she required care that they cannot provide later in life (hospice care), that's ok, because there is a "really good" hospice company. 4. I suggested going to independent living with 24 hour agency licensed nursing care. They would not allow this, since if they did not show up, mom cannot "independently evacuate ". If I attempted this, Randy would call adult protective services. 5. The first week my mother was under their care, the tv didn't work. They left an 86 yo woman in a room with tv or radio, complete silence. No staff member realized this was a problem. Would never recommend this company. They will blindside you when your loved one is acutely ill to discuss costs and administration under the guise of "care team"compassion. The use of intimidation and bullying highlights their lack of empathy for family members during a difficult time.

Even after that, it seemed the efforts by staff to get her involved and acclimated to her new living arrangements were minimal. Certainly the COVID lockdown made things difficult for senior living facilities, but we paid extra for bathing assistance for mother, and yet when I would see her I could tell she was wearing the same clothes for days in a row, which meant she wasn't bathing and we even sleeping in the same clothes. Mother was on blood thinners, so it was important to monitor her for potential internal bleeding or at least be aware of any pronounced weakness or paleness. Since I couldn't visit her in person, I had to depend on staff for this. In September she had a fall and then was extremely weak and was sent via ambulance to the ER. She had severe internal bleeding and had to have 4 units of blood transfused. I am amazed that the "nursing" staff at Belmont couldn't have observed this issue sooner. Mother passed away in October, and when we went to clear out her belongings, we discovered that all of her valuable jewelry had been stolen from her room. When we reported this to Belmont, they didn't seem to care much, and pretty much blamed it on us that we let Mother have those things in her room. Nothing that was stolen was ever recovered. So if you send your loved one to Belmont, be sure not to send anything of value with them.

As I live and work in Dallas, many of the details had to be taken care of by phone or email. It was a great comfort to know that they were there to help in any way possible. He is doing much better now, and I attribute a part of this to the Belmont staff. It is a great relief to know that he has all of his meals prepared. (He says the food is usually quite good!) He enjoys the company of other residents and occasionally joins in the community activities they provide. He is provided with transportation to any doctor visits, his laundry is done, and his room is the perfect size for him. Living in a different city, all of these things mean the world to me. The few times that there has been a problem, they get in touch immediately There is no business that hasn't experienced challenges in the past couple of years. The Belmont continues to make improvements and changes for the better and that's what counts. I look forward to my next trip to visit him as they treat family members very well!

I find that if there are issues they are addressed and corrected. No place is perfect. But the staff is very warm and caring, the food is very good and there is a variety, the facility is quite clean. There are activities to participate in. When I first came to look it over I was greeted very warmly by Pearlie the sales director. She is a gem and has been a gem ever since. I can't tell you how welcome she made me feel. Maecella the receptionist is also super nice and competent. Hendrick who drives and fixes things is awesome. There are so many nice things this staff has done for me that it would take too long to write it here. Things that I feel are above and beyond. The RAs are also super nice and helpful. Again I can't name them all because there are so many. Then there is the kitchen staff that are awesome too. I notice that the staff always have smiles here so it must be a good place for them to work as well. Now I am looking forward to getting back home soon. But in the meantime let me tell you I have been treated like a queen. In fact I call this my resort LOL. This place has been perfect for me. I have been able to concentrate on getting well while they take care of the rest. I just can't thank them enough.

Tuesday at dinner I found her at the table having clearly had a stroke. Obvious within seconds. When I said she didn't look right, the waitress said she was "just getting used to her new surroundings" and "was like that yesterday, too." The ER doctor said it had happened more than five hours earlier. Someone dressed her and walked her to dinner that way. She never recovered and died a few weeks later. Myra and Jessica were wonderful. But the place is understaffed -- the night call button routinely took 10-15 minutes, sometimes 30, and hospice ended up doing much of the care we paid $3,000 a month extra for. It also runs like a business. Two days after she came back from the stroke hospital, her care fee went from $1,100 to $3,000, on top of $6,300 rent. Two stars. Lovely building, some wonderful people. Neither caught my mother's stroke.
