40 years old and every dental appointment through my mid 30s I was told no cavities and that my…read moreteeth were super clean! Then a few years ago I went in for a cleaning and the doctor berated me for my vegan diet, told me to come back in a couple weeks because for evaluation of a potential root canal something he should've known that day. He guilted me and made me very scared. I decided to do research and had read on healing cavities naturally, and gave it all I had to attempt to remineralize myself. Then in the past week I had an abscess start on one tooth and another tooth chip. My perfect teeth down the drain. I was emotional. I thought for sure I was going to need to have dentures. I'm still single and never married, so my possibility of finding a man who would accept my dentures was going to be out the door. I have had one skeleton in the closet that no one other than me knew about. My teeth look beautifully white when I smile, but inside my mouth they have been more than an embarrassing mess. I was praying and praying the Lord would heal them so that nobody would ever have to see how disgusting they were. So when I arrived and learned that I only needed a root canal and essentially a partial prosthetic tooth my fears of dentures were resolved. But a root canal? Doesn't that mean they pull my tooth from the root and that will cause some major pain? Dr. Johnson explained exactly what it was to me but I knew it was going to require an anesthetic. The last time I had one of those shots I couldn't help but let out a scream. Medicine has changed so much that there are now topical numbing agents that make it so you barely feel the needle. At the end of the day there was no pain. I'm passing through Iowa on my way home from several months of travel. Dr. Johnson made every accommodation possible to get me moving along. He didn't judge my chosen vegan and alternative natural lifestyle and was willing to work with me on other options. I think that's what we all want. Someone who gives us their professional opinion then gives us the freedom to make our own decision. Those decisions may turn into poor choices but at least all of the information was laid out on the table. Thanks to Dr. Johnson there is hope for me! I might not have to die all alone after all!

They charged me $45 for a missed appointment. They said it was for sanitizing the room. $45? I…read morecan see maybe $5. Wouldn't me missing my appointment save them $45 from having to do it for the next patient anyway? The oral hygenist was good, but I got a different dentist each time. The billing was alyways off so it just seemed very unorganized. And the $45 is just annoying. I will not be going back.

Great care, and understanding staff. 10/10 for friendliness, cleanliness, attitude, communication…read more(billing, procedure, and care options) and willing to work with us financially and mentally. LGBTQIA+ friendly, and reccomended by One Iowa. If you are up front with dental anxiety or the amount of money you can spend, Downtown Dental Care bends over backwards to do what they can for you. Anecdote/Example time: My partner has had many teeth degrade due to depression/fear of dentists, so much so that another dentist told her she'd lose all her teeth. However, when my partner was in incredible tooth pain, we went to Downtown Dental Care as it was recommended by One Iowa. We explained that she had dental anxiety, and when we arrived, everyone (from Joni at the front desk to Dr. Riley himself) was kind, understanding, and patient with my partner. No guilt or blame were given for the state of her teeth. There was only a focus on "get you better" and looking to the future-- no shame or chiding! Prodecures were explained to us step-by-step, all matter of fact without judgement. All tooth care has been presented with options and explanations of each option for us, like the cost physically vs financially for a root canal vs a tooth pulling. Not only have we been given options for treatment, but when Dr. Riley cannot do something himself (either due to his practice (like pulling teeth) or due to cost (root canal), he recommends the best place to go- a surgeon who also understands dental anxiety, or Iowa City Dentistry School for cost. One additional thing to add: My partner has Delta Dental, and the staff, hygienists, and Dr. Riley, have all helped her navigate her insurance and pointed out the next steps she needs to do when they cannot do something for her. It is incredible, personal care. Needless to say, despite my partner's dentist anxiety, she loves the team at Downtown Dental Care!

I've been going to East Des Moines Dental for quite a few years and have never had problems. They…read moreare attentive to their work and staff is friendly. But there is room for a lot of improvement. Their ability to answer phone calls and or to reach out to their patients for billing is exceptionally low. Recently I was served with papers at my residence for an over-due bill from 4 years ago. I have been going to this dentist for over 10 years. They have all my contact information including my phone number, email, home address and my mothers phone number and email, yet out of the 4 years that this bill was due, neither one of us were reached out to or notified of this issue. Due to them choosing to reach out to an attorney instead of me I had to pay my over-due bill and a $100 attorney fee. I've always been on top of bills and whatever fees I have due so this situation could've gone so much better for myself and them. But I had to learn that unfortunately East Des Moines Dental does NOT care for their patients they are treating for and are only caring for what money they can get out of people. Just a warning for first time patients and or patients who have been loyal for many years, they WILL NOT have you back on financial terms.
